The Royal Guard are useless. They're used more an image to keep enemies from attacking. The level of uselessness is proven in the episode "the Summer Sun Setback." Aside from that, they're more than like killed by then in the story's timeline

The author never released one to my current understanding. This was two years ago, I believe, so I've never looked to see if there was a sequel written. I don't think it needs one, and the ending is what makes it grimdark. Twilight has to accept the mistake she made, along with the consequences that followed. She may not have intended to get corrupted by an ancient artifact, but what happened is said and done, and there's nothing she can do to fix it. She can only move on and try to rebuild Equestria as a way of remorse for her actions while under the influence of the artifact.
