We're working on our first indie game, a spell casting action roguelike. And we finally found a trick to make it super fun to play! In this devlog, we share our design process and show you how our game is progressing. Hope you like it!
Would be awesome if you'd wishlist Furcifer's Fungeon! :) store.steampow...

I'm a strong believer in the 'Everything is a Remix' mentality - stealing ideas usually isn't stealing, it's just the creative process! Good to hear from your experiences, this is going to come in handy for my own game design sessions :)

I've experienced it myself, when things go smoothly from the beginning to the end it's such a good feeling, even for basic stuff!! On a side note, since you've been a major inspiration for me to try gamedev and youtube even if not a native english speaker, I want to thank you guys so much!! Love your attitude!!!

I am late to this... Here's another fun thing you can steal. Probably best used for a single weapon/spell. Its from Fighting Games. There are types of moves are called Rekkas. You can look it up on the Fighting Game Glossary. If you do a Rekka move again before it finishes, you will do an additional, similar move. Most Rekkas have 3 stages of action/combo, and end with a big hit. You know a Rekka is fun, when players make noises when pressing a button in a Rekka. Often getting louder and to the rhythm of the button presses.

nice progress on your game! my suggestion towards the art would be to use the saruration a bit to your advantage.. make the environment and non-interactable stuff a bit less sarurated, keep it the same on players and enemies.. it will highly improve the readability on the screen! for example: in league of legends, the environment has the lowest saturation. the characters are one 'level' above that, and on top you got the UI - including the shop window which is the decision of the player that he wants to look at it, thus making it more sarurated helps to immediately identify where to look at :)

I'm a fan of simple inputs leading to complex behavior. I'm glad you were able to keep the action buttons to two while enabling additional decisions.

Magicka had a very complex spell system and was a cult classic. I wouldn't give up on a complex spell system depending on who you want to target. Dragon marked for death also had a similarly complex casting system on the mage and oracle class. Learning to make use of a complex tool can be incredibly gratifying for players if the rewards for mastery are sufficient.
