What Hippocrates Knew and We Have Forgotten

Medical students hear about the Hippocratic Oath during the first days of medical school, but what does it actually state? Hippocrates was an ancient Greek physician who lived from 460 to 370 BC, so how relevant is his interpretation of medicine nowadays? Dr. John Patrick, a retired pediatrician and now a world-renown lecturer, explores these questions further.
"What the Hippocratic Oath gave substance to was a vision of a medical community with a predictable character of high ethical standards which could support justifiable trust between physician and patient with all the therapeutic benefit which such a community produces." Dr. Patrick argues that today, medicine has become more commercialized with a loss of these "communities of character." Therefore how can we currently put the Hippocratic oath into practice?

This is one of the best speeches I've heard during my studies in medical school. I have had questions about morality and integrity arise all throughout my studies and practices in hospitals. Dr Patrick's speech gave me food for thought and most importantly, not only new questions without answers but also new information which I will be happy to learn through the books and people he mentioned. What an amazing mind he has.

as a medical student who is training under the Asian cultured medicine influenced slightly by Chinese medicine yet grew up in African where African medicine was a cornerstone to most communities I visited whilst growing up I have to say that your talk has opened a form of thinking that has made me go back to re evaluate belief that is a requisite of a medical practitioner. This video needs to be viewed by every doctor today. I’d also like to point out that the Germans actually began their crusade, as they were trying to irradiate tuberculosis. There was ill conceived attempts to create a vaccine, which caused multiple other outbreaks. People that were ill, or had be infected faced similar exile from businesses and their institutions, that the Jews and Gypsies later suffered. They were also not permitted to obtain marriage license, and were not allow to have relationships with those that had never been infected. When H*tler began targeting the Jews, he used tuberculosis as an excuse, and began calling them the “deceased race”. There an easily found study on the subject titled: Tuberculosis, Nazi Medicine, and Genocide. It could be purely coincidental, but the timeline of events matches up pretty closely to days we are currently living. That being said, thank you for the video. It was a refreshing and enlightening perceptive. It also resonates as way to approach the cultural clash of ideologies and beliefs we are facing.

I find most of the arguments here largely uninteresting. Many seem to boil down to "Well obviously it would be this way". With respect, it seems like conjecture. With that said I appreciate the perspective, much of what was said, and I don't want to just say it's invalid. Instead I will give my perspective. I personally don't believe in judgement after death, but my self respect and happiness and sense of fulfillment are largely based on the good I do and my understanding of whether I'm acting in a way that the world would be better off if more acted that way. I like doing a good job and I want to see the world better by the time I die. I know multiple people that have been molested by people of devout faith. I have seen no correlation in my personal life between those of faith (or belief in judgement after death) and what I believe is virtuous behavior. Maybe there are just lots of fakes out there. Like I said, I don't want to invalidate. Morals are very important, especially in health care, and maybe there is some important value in this belief in judgement after death that would make me a better doctor if I were to become one. This could be true, but I'm not convinced after watching this. The importance of morals and philosophy and not lost on me, but this talk has a lot of religious claims backed by very specific perspectives.

Oh so interesting are the comments on this video. I love it! This gentleman upset me at the beginning……..but his paradoxical thinking has me gripped. By study, I’ve grown past organized religions but by heart I’m with him. He challenges the core of who we are which spirituality(knowledge of all real universal sciences) I found answers to those fundamental questions. Hippocrates is my hero and I’ve been able to help others using his methods. Now, as far as WWII and the concentration camps, please look up IG Farbin/Bayer to find the real culprits in the medical testing taking place in the concentration camps surrounding Germany. It’s ugly reality and this is big pharma, big oil, big bank and huge multi National chemical corporations. Enough of that BS. Rockefeller pharmaceuticals using grants and funding has changed medicine to this mechanistic form of medicine and removed natural or vitalistic homeopathy which we had until 100 years ago. “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” Hippocrates said. However, Ancient Greek people in general did not believe in life after death, eternal bliss or damnation the same way Christians do. There were also different mysteries, cultic religions which promised eternal bliss for their initiates only, but the majority of Greece believed only in a dim vision of the underworld where the spirits of dead reside as ghosts without pain or pleasure. So Dr Patrick operates on a mistaken premise here. The Hippocratic Oath might have been composed and used by such a little cult as I have just mentioned, a group of initiates of Asclepius, but that is another matter to discuss.

The ultimate reason you have for striving to be a good doctor is fear of judgement when you die??? I think he says at some point that a man that does not fear judgement after death can do whatever the hell he wants. Well, what if I told you that not all of us are so fucking SELFISH?? I do not believe in any God, I do not believe I will be judged after death, yet I still strive to do the very best for my patient's heath and comfort, the latter being something that is usually overlooked. Also, as a biologist, it's great fun to listen to physicians who clearly have little background in evolutionary biology, molecular phylogenetics, etc. whinge on about the shortcomings of evolution. I think it would be to anyone and everyone's edification to listen to and digest the thoughts of another, including some hyper-biased zealous, if that is what is what a speaker is claimed to be by some listener. To refuse to listen to another on the grounds that the other person is too opinionated speaks magnitudes about the character of the listener and the security of his/her belief system. To not listen to an argument in its entirety because it is a "too polar" argument allows for the views of the listener to be polarized by avoiding the opposite argument. In other words, one is guilty of willfully accepting confirmation bias by avoiding arguments against one's belief system.

Information is best delivered in a direct fashion, without background music and emotional appeals. When someone needs to use manipulation to make their point, they are already making themselves look dangerous. It's not an opinion I am opposed to, it's the delivery. Delivery can say a lot about a person's capability to stay unbiased and do atual research based on facts, rather than create a presentation they want to deliver, but that has little merit. I don't believe you can be a Christian and take that oath, for in doing so you renounce the One True God of the bible. Would it not be the same as putting insence on the alter of Ceaser and saying Ceaser is Lord? Doing so would be a great compromise.
