Ive now bought a 8 hybrid that i use if im not hitting my irons very well,can also chip and run with it. Hybrids are great clubs as ive never been a great iron player.

This is a great video, and for me its about removing stigma. Its the same as people rocking up every week and playing the tips or too long a tee for your game, they feel like they have to to keep up with the others. This video has made me book a fitting, and im going to experiment a 5 and a 3. Every now and then i can flush a 5 iron, which is great, but more often than not, i get the low cutty one, whereas my current 4 hybrid is far more consistant.

I have come to love my hybrids. I recently switched out my 6 iron (a Mizuno 221 blade) for a 6 hybrid. There was no avoiding the tremendous height and descent angle of the hybrid. Same distance, but much more likely to hold a green. I also love the adjustability which allows me to adjust gapping between clubs. I seem to change lofts on a fairly regular basis depending on how I am hitting my longer irons and the various hybrids.

Several issues for everyone to consider. 1. How far you hit a 7 iron depends on the loft. 2. The No. iron to start a set with also depends on the loft. 3. When you get a fitting, it's usually only with a 6 iron, so how do you analyze distance gaps. 5. My irons are 3-pw , 8 clubs 21-47 degrees loft range yet a lot of current irons are 4-pw, 7 clubs with some only 1 degree difference in loft range, so the distance gaps are actually greater in shorter / scoring irons in modern sets.

Golfer here with over 100mph driver club head speed. I carry a 2 hybrid between my 4 iron and 4 wood. As you increase swing speed with good technique, you realize that you appreciate the better control of a long iron. HOWEVER, you must have the speed & consistency to take full advantage of your tools. This is all to say, get the right tools to support your swing speed & consistency.
@GolfingFocus
@GolfingFocus 4 ай бұрын
That's great point about swingspeed as relates to the long irons. 👍 The desired ball flight you are looking for with longer clubs is also something to bear in mind too. Your higher numbered fairway wood and long iron may go exactly the same distance but one will likely give you a higher ball flight which you may prefer for your course.

Have you considered a game improvement or players distance 4-iron instead of a hybrid? We’ve noticed when reviewing the pro sets on the PGA, Champions and LPGA Tour more players are going for more forgiving longer irons before switching to players or blade shorter irons. Don’t know if you’ve tried this already but maybe worth trying alongside a hybrid?

I used to hate hybrids, they always went left and hooked. But new technology that lets you flatten the lie angle has changed my views. I have replaced my long irons with Ping G425 hybrids! Interestingly I carry both a 5 hybrid and a 5 iron as there is a significant distance gap (30 yds) between 5 hybrid and 6 Iron, the 5 Iron covers the gap, but i had to give up my LW, my SW is 56 so going to 3 wedges vice 4 wedges is the cost of the change.

Think 180/190 distance with it pretty good to be honest although know how frustrating it can be with a ball flight that doesn't work for you. Not sure what we can suggest beyond going to a good fitter to see if they can help although again know that's obvious and not particularly helpful advice. I'm surprised that 2 hybrids are basically unheard of. I think they could benefit a lot of people with average and higher swing speeds. I wanted to simplify my game this year so I scrapped my driver and 3 wood and replaced them with a 2 hybrid delofted to 15.5°. My tee shots are way more reliable now and the average distance is undoubtedly higher. It's pretty reliant on rollout but it will easily total 270 and even flirt with 300 at times which is flat out better than I can hit a 3 wood. Also way easier than hitting a 3 wood off the deck. The simplifying also reflected in my long irons which were better than ever not having to keep up a bunch of different types of swing.

Key thing is to experiment and see which loft of hybrid then gives you the best yardage gapping to your 3 hybrid. And starting with the 22 degree for the experimentation seems as good a place as any 👍

10 club bag (on purpose) using 24-30-36 hybrid then jump to my 46 degree wedge on the short end or 21 degree 7 wood on the long end. Complete sets of irons are a joke. Yes blended sets are becoming popular. I think regular golfers aren’t going to maximize results from 7 total irons. I see lots of old iron sets from golfers who have no desire to drop $1200. I’m not saying you need to bag less than 14 clubs, but maybe we need to rethink what type of club we need from 22 degrees up to about 42 degrees.

Agree. Fourteen clubs is ridiculous. Seven would be my number. But as with most things, there is money to be made with complication and complexity. They should play pro tournaments where players are rewarded one stroke for every club they remove from their bag for each round. Then we would find out how many clubs you really need!

One thing to look out for sure when it comes to the wide body versions of hybrids is that they are typically biased towards producing a draw. Wouldn’t stop this making them a consideration though and a good fitted can help without question find one that can work for you 👍

I love my hybrids. I carry 2 and sometimes 3 no 5 wood. But as a club fitter/builder I cringed at the quote of the 24/38 rule by a modern day PGA teaching pro. (That title always makes me think about a line from a Woody Allen movie - "those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach phys ed"). That dinosaur came about when blades roamed the earth. That was a 3 iron back in the day and spawned witty sayings such as "only God can hit a 1 iron". Too many 5 irons are those specs today. Does it still hold true? Only for a blade or a shallow cavity back. All the rest have overly engineered heads that have positioned the weight low and away from the face with faces that flex every which way imaginable. Introducing a new set of problems that have replaced the 24/38 rule with low face or toe strikes. And folks wonder why that can't make center face contact.

Would be great to get your feedback on what you think is a better rule for modern clubs. Key thing we are trying to get across with all our videos and certainly with this one is to get people thinking about hybrids and we would certainly argue that everyone should have at least one as we talk about in the video. The various items in the video are just starting points for people's testing and as much as people can afford to would always recommend going to a club fitter where they can. 👍

@@GolfingFocus I think I have an intelligent answer for you now. If it isn't intelligent...it is certainly a considered answer. 😉 I think possibly that one should consider spin rate by loft. Back in the day of real traditional lofts, the expectation was that you could look for each iron spinning in the neighborhood of 1000 rpms times the number of the iron. 5 iron - 5000 rpms. The loft on the 5 iron in the 1960s-1970s was 32*. That is many 7 irons today. So, a modern/current 7 iron spinning around 5000 rpms would be acceptable. A 28* 6 iron spinning at 4000 rpms. A 24 ish degree 5 iron at 3000rpms and so on. If you get higher spin-rates in the 6/5/4/3 irons, so much the better. At some point you will run out of loft and won't spin the ball enough for the club to be viable. This could be tweaked by length of shaft and/or lie angle...but currently I'm thinking spin rate might be the benchmark. Love your videos! Keep them coming! Your accent just drips golf. All the best!

@@pdmv8471Apologies it has taken me so long to come back to you on this. Your reply got lost in my inbox and so I missed it. I am certain you are right that spin rate by loft is a benchmark that golfers could certainly consider and may lead them to the best results. Only caveat I have is that the 'average' golfer tends to think (in my view at least) in much simpler terms and would struggle a bit using that as the benchmark to get to their choice of hybrids. I may be wrong of course! Huge thanks also for the feedback and following the channel. It is very much appreciated! 👍👍

@@pdmv8471, you have good thinking on spin rates and loft. More simplistically, a golfer should be playing with hybrids and irons that do not roll out more than twenty yards and preferably fifteen yards and less.

It's a possibility for sure although there are so many options now. Think it's great now people can either play 9 or even 11 woods or mix up their iron sets going from game improvement or even super game improvement with the low irons all the way to players irons at the short end of the bag. Key thing is probably just to make sure you are taking all the help you can from tech in clubs wherever you can get it 👍
