Most music made pre 1984 was before drum machines. This was real players with very little if any studio edits. These were the true pioneers and visionary players that paved the way and are much overlooked today. To be an authentic human drummer you got to check out the era before drum machines.

That is, of course!!! Carl Palmer, Phil Collins, Alan White, Chester Thompson, Vinnie Colaiuta, Bill Bruford, John Bonham, Steve Gadd et ad lateres!!! These were REAL drummers. Of course, there are wonderful drummers now, that play gospel chops against a sequence...I myself love them....but it-is-not-exactly-the-same....

Best thing to be is a pocket drummer. I have 18 hours of all different types and years of music to play along to in my ipod shuffle. Motown to big band, 60's , 50's on up. Rock. Smooth jazz etc. Listen to Paul Carrack's stuff and his remakes. Disco and Bgees. Always trying to learn, and I'm 70. Love ur chops though

Dude - I think your feeling is EXACTLY the same for all eras of drummers/musicians! I am about 15 years older than you are, and I always felt like the late 60s and early 70s weren't represented until later in my 20s. The feeling is normal - you're doing the right thing by recognizing that and working on it!

I see what you mean, I've been there too and I think my playing improved 10x when I stopped worrying too much about technique and started developing my musicality instead. If you haven't yet, try writing and producing your own music, it's an eye opening experience!

David, sou do Brasil. Aqui não tem esse tipo de lugar para instalar uma bateria como aí. Gostaria que vc falasse mais sobre como funciona esse espaço. Como ele é? Quantos espaços existe no condômino?

Have you ever tried playing for musical theater? When I first started playing for musicals it changed the way I looked at drumming.
@lorenzodonato4755

Honestly, your technicality is astonishing. I think your next step is keep those logistics at bay and focus on your “sound”. You mentioned working on “hits” that was inspired by gospel and pop etc! I would encourage you to listen to elevation worships celebratory moments (the big crash and swell moments at the end of a song/set) They use the Nashville number system to call out a chord that they want to “hit” simultaneously with the drummer. The drums sound HUGE and and the snare cuts Right through the mix in this particular genre of music and that is what people are gonna call you back for. Not your chops, your dynamics ;)

Your left hand is an enigma David! Ghost strokes are a about an inch from the head, accents come down from about chin height. Did you consciously develop the technique of extending your index finger down the stick, and is there a specific benefit?

Sorry for the late comment: 10:00 David, it's only natural when you are young. I myself used to do the same....spend my whole lifetime checking the nuts and bolts of Simon Phillips, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl's playing (those were the power drummers en vogue in my late teens early twenties, around 1989...) It's not about that. That will lead you to nothing. When you get mature, you realize about the musicality....THAT is what gives sense to everything you play. You seem to be a very mature musician, despite your youth. I am sure that you already notice about I told, or will in the short run....I always thought of you as a very talented and advantaged musician....

I totally get what you're saying about listening to songs - I'm something of the opposite, my technical skills aren't anything special (although I do think I have decent technique due to an excellent teacher, who was an LA session guy), but I have decades of listening to music that I draw from. As someone who grew up in the 80's and 90's, I'd say go listen to Toto, anything pre-1992 where Jeff Porcaro was playing. For that matter, most albums coming out of the LA scene in the 80's probably had at least a few tracks where JP was playing. Also, Kenny Aronoff, Vinne Colaiuta, Dave Garibaldi, and Paul Leim (more of a Nashville guy). I always aspired to a studio drummer proficiency - able to play any style, any time. Love your videos!

Good stuff! I was never into your playing because of your heavy focus on technique and chops, but I always respected how good you were. I am starting to notice the musicality improve in your playing, which is my main focus as a player I'd say (sort of neglect the technique side lol), and I would say dig deeper. Go to the roots even for a little bit of time. Study African music, styles from west, central, and south africa, and their influence on popular music today. I'd say check out Kassa and Konkoba (farming music from Guinea), and Kinka (recreational music from Ghana). You'll hear the influence on Cuban, Brazilian, and Caribbean music (also stuff you should check out) 100% by doing this, which in turn makes up a lot of the influence of African American music, which is the basis of most popular music today. You'll be so surprised how much Kinka sounds like James Brown, because that's where it comes from. You'll hear the connection to jazz drumming, because of the improvised nature and how musical phrases are built and felt. Also, the groove is worth listening to on its own. It's a beautiful path to follow, even for at least a month, and you don't even need to analyze it deeply as long as you see and feel a connection. Hopefully you read this and take kindly to it. All the best!

Great vid! I feel like my 2020 goals are the exact opposite of yours: improving my chops and technical playing. Also I do a "COD workout", where I'll do as many pushups/situps/squats/dips as I can between each match. Super short, high intensity bursts really felt great while also playing video games! Good luck on your journey, mate!

But how about your family. My dad is born in 1946 so i heard a lot of rock 'n roll in my youth. My uncle was heavy into the rolling stones. 3 years ago i went to a concert of the Golden Earring (very well known Dutch band) with my 66 year old aunt. My dads aunt her husband was big into Jazz and blues. So i picked up alot from my family. If people search my hearddrive for music they are mostly impressed by the various amount of different styles and artists i collect and listen to. I can go to a hardstyle party on a friday and if i had the oppurtunity if he was still alive i would go to Sinatra on Saturday. When i started drumming i started with modern day pop cause that's the easiest to get into when your learning. After a few years you broaden your horizon. My favourite for drumming is jazz. But i've seen you do some Paramore covers which are also fun to do. I don't play in a band. Drumming for me is my time to unwind. I play at home and 2 hours every other week at my drum school. There i can just go ham and not worry about my neighbours.

Since you’ve got the jumping Jax thing down you should try progressing to jumping rope. It takes good rhythm to master you’d probably find it much better than just jumping Jax. I’ll add this, you have fantastic chops, especially for only playing 10 years? I’ve really enjoyed your you tube channel and what you’ve shared. If there’s one album that I think you should check out it would be Rufus and Chaka Kahn stompin at the Savoy. It’s a live recording from back in the Day. (I’m 56) John JR Robinson on drums. No electronics, loops, samples.. none of that shit. Just pure pocket.

I would say lastly my friend. Not that I anything against chops. But if I listen to a tsunami of notes on a track, I won’t know who the drummer is. There are successful drummers who have mastered such a particular sound, that if you played a clip of them at any given moment I would know who that is. So I would encourage you, instead of being “A” drummer that’s versatile for a bunch of inconsistent gigs. Be THE drummer with a unique and consistent sound that keeps the perfect gig calling you back!
