I was always terrified to try durian because I’d heard people talk about the smell so many times (and it does stink). But when I got the chance to try it and thought it might be my only chance, it was pretty good! It’s a very complex flavor, tasting like several things and they sort of roll over your senses in waves. My friend and I were saying, “It tastes like X. Oh, now it tastes like Y! Now it tastes like Z!!!” It was really interesting. Fun to do at the same time as other people, because we were all comparing.

Hey Rose! Thanks for this vlog. I'm planning on going to Thailand and Vietnam soon. I have the option of staying 3 weeks in either Thailand or Vietnam. I'm Vietnamese so I know I'll love all the vegan food in Vietnam... but I feel like Thailand is more vegan-friendly - if it's easier being vegan in Thailand then it's more worth staying longer in. I'm just not certain which one to pick staying longer in! Thoughts?
@CheapLazyVegan Жыл бұрын
I love both! But you're right, I think Thailand is definitely better for vegans - much more vegan friendly overall, based on my experience~ so if I had the choice, I would stay longer in Thailand : )

I really do NOT like durian, haha! But I'm happy I got the chance to try it ☺However I hate the videos you sometimes see online of people trying durian for the first time and act like they're vomiting. It's so disrespectful of anothers food culture.

I tried durian in a smoothie in Chicago and it was so disgusting it made me angry. But I was on the trip with Rose this year & had a tiny piece of fresh durian in Bangkok and it wasn't that bad! I think the freshness makes a difference, and if it's overripe it starts tasting like garbage lol
@lzlzlz347 Жыл бұрын
Ohh the trip looked amazing 💕 I got to try durian in Indonesia, our host prepared it for us. I'm usually pretty openminded when it comes to food but I could not get over the funky aftertaste. It is sweet and custardy tho, if you've grown up with it in your food culture I can def understand that it can be enjoyable :) @@ginsoakedgirl4

@@lzlzlz347 I'm also not a fan of super-sweet fruits. The amount I tried in Thailand was literally a teaspoon, I was being a baby lol. It must have hit that sweet spot of perfect ripeness... but I also didn't want to push it and have any more 😆

I've never liked the smell of durian, but not to the point of what other people say... I think cooking bamboo smells worse (but also tastes very good lol). ETA: oniony and garlicky was not what I expected lol... this must be a cilantro thing where genetics has people taste things completely differently

I’m really skeptical and concerned about the prison part… it seems like guests enjoy the unpaid labor of people who are caught up probably much like in the US. There are so many better things than policing, criminalization, incarceration, and exploitation disguised as helping. Please reconsider going there in the future.
@4dultw1thj0b Жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm kinda surprised at what a romanticized light it's presented in. Unless it's supposed to be, like, helping them reenter the workforce once free? Even then though it still seems pretty exploitative.

I know a lot of people who have lived in Thailand and I know similar programs save women from prostitution. I don't think they are being used. You do know there are good solutions and actual help in other countries than those in the West, right?

“THAILAND IS NOT widely known as a carceral state, but with the world’s fourth-highest incarceration rate, it is one of the easiest places in the world to end up in prison. Ranking above it are the United States, Honduras, and Turkmenistan. Notably, Thailand also holds the title of having the highest rate of female prisoners. According to World Prison Relief, the current total prison population stands at 354,905. Conditions for those in prison in Thailand are extremely poor, with 143 of 144 of Thai prisons reporting overcrowding. Due to this overcrowding, those who find themselves inside suffer from terrible conditions, with meager food rations, space shortages, and inadequate facilities. The carceral food budget is ฿49 (1.60USD) per day, which is capped at a prison population of 190,200. But the real prison population being near double that, as a result of which almost all inmates go without proper food. “

“Pr*stitution in Thailand is illegal.[1][2] However, due to p*lice corruption and an economic reliance on pr*stitution dating back to the Vietnam War, it remains a significant presence in the country.[3][4] It results from poverty, low levels of education and a lack of employment in rural areas. [Secs workers] mostly come from the northeastern (Isan) region of Thailand, from ethnic minorities or from neighbouring countries” What is called crime is a social construct. And conditions that contribute to poverty are not naturally occurring and often caused by the wealthy and powerful knowingly.
