Glory be, you're back! And for sure your time away was very blessed. Best wishes for all that life has brought you over the past year. On the food front, I have to say the pound o' cheese route is very tempting. And it makes sense not to have to carry extra water for cooking on a trail like the TRT. The carries seemed to be a lot just for drinking water. I love those Indian pouches, but they seem like a lot of weight. Without the stove and fuel, though, you can afford to have better food.

These are great ideas for car camping without a stove or frig. I'm not comfortable with a stove and I don't want to buy a $600 frig for weekend trips. In a car I don't have to worry about quantity or water but many of the roads that I travel don't have food or coffee available, so this video is helpful.

Have done tortilla based meals too. Peanut Butter & M&M's are good. Have done Peanut Butter & Raisins too. Dried meats like pepperoni (or salami) & cheese is good. If cooler weather, I bring deli meats & hot dogs. Have eaten SPAM cold and cooked (cooked is better). Bring some mayo packs, adds calories & flavor. My big food item is 30oz mixed nuts, calorie dense, and loads of protein fat & fiber (could survive on just nuts). But, my go to breakfast is 1 cup cereal, 1/4 cup coconut flakes, 1/3 cup NIDO, all in a freezer bag, then add water, shake, instant milk & cereal.

Hey, that was fun! So good to see you back with some solid information, not like so many of the "influencers" hiking the trails these days. A pound of cheese isn't bad over 2-4 days, I pack the same things along with dry salami and peppers, but you are correct that leftover pizza is a trail delicacy. I'm in self-isolation right now, COVID got me, so just planning my summer backpacking trips and you're video for right in. I so appreciate your perspective related to food on the trail. I look forward to planning my next backpacking trip using some of your perspectives. On a recent PCT section hike I preloaded blueberries into a Smart Water bottle and loved being able to eat on the go. The berries only come out a couple at a time so they last long (plus when done you still have use of the bottle for water).

Track title at the end of the video, please? 😀 I definitely wanna try doing more "no cook" menu options on my next summer adventure. Tortillas are great and so versatile. I took tortillas on my last pct section hike and my favorite meal was making a breakfast burrito out of the Peak refuel breakfast skillet/scramble for dinner. The damp chill in the air in Washington made having a hot meal all the more comforting.

That cheese really had me thinking so I looked it up and one lb. of Pepper Jack has only 1718 calories. Not nearly as high as I thought. A whole lb. of Hershey's chocolate with almonds is 2,388 calories. What blew me away is Fritos. One lb. of those has 2539 calories!
@memathews
@memathews 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's why Fritos, Doritos, some other chips are such great trail food, they are basically a delivery system for fat, which has the highest calorie content per gram (9 calories/gram, 238/oz). And you can use them as firestarters in a rainstorm.

Good video! I always feel like bear bait with empty tuna and salmon packages, even in a ziploc. My new favorite is hard boiled eggs, peeled. I’ll eat 3 for dinner, the night out of town, and then 3 for breakfast the next morning. I carry a tiny baggie of truffle salt for eggs that I may come across during resupply. I’ve done the Vermont Long Trail, E2E. Nothing longer, yet.

Nice to see you again. I'm off trail for a knee issue that I hope will be healed in the next 90 days so I can do the Oregon section of the PCT I never pack a stove so this will be fun. I like everything in the picture at 2:57 but I avoid Tuna because of it's strong odor and low calorie content but I like Tuna at home. If I packed it I would eat it first and burn the wrapper. No fires would mean no tuna on trails. Of course your cholesterol went up. it has to go up because you are in at least mild ketosis hiking and cholesterol is part of the caloric delivery system. Did you check your lipids after the PCT? Mine did not change other than HDL doubled but I'm always on a ketogenic diet when not hiking. @ 5:36 . . . LOL. Now you have to put the pants with the pockets in a bear canister at night (You know I'm kidding)

This might be a silly question, but isn't cheese suppose to be refrigerated? I didn't know that it can be at room temp!
@JenniferMabus
@JenniferMabus 2 жыл бұрын
Obviously when it’s hot out, the cheese will “sweat”. And if it doesn’t get colder at night then it will only last 2-3 days. But if the temperatures are dropping at night and is packed away (i.e. not being carried outside the pack with sunlight hitting it), cheese can last for about 4-5 days in my experience!

I love tuna packets for lunch but I worry that they are too smelly to eat at camp for dinner. Do you ever worry they will attract unwanted visitors to camp?
@JenniferMabus
@JenniferMabus 2 жыл бұрын
My thoughts are that even if I eat tuna for lunch and have the wrapper in my trash, they can smell that just like if I ate it for dinner. The bear canister doesn't prevent bears from being able to smell the contents, just prevents them from getting into the food. So, to answer, I ALWAYS worry about bears regardless hahahah
