His whites sure have a lot of nice variation to them. I’m always tempted to use white from the tube but it never seems to look as good as an off-white

I don't think he used straight white, When you are suggesting the light, white objects will be cool or warm so the white is always effected by a color.

His work is great, but compared to the post impressionists, he's not as adventurous. But he made a living of it.
