I'll try and be short. I took a tour around Blanding, Utah with a Navaho guide service to ancient sites. It was amazing and inspiring to hear his interpretation of the sites and meaning of some rock art. If you ever get a chance to talk with or go on a trip with a native American, I think it would make an amazing video!

There must be tribal elders for each group that could tell you what their beliefs are especially for these petroglyphs. What if you could contact the closest elders as they would be able to guide you to the correct person via email?

I once saw a fascinating video where an elderly Native American spoke of two distinct types of 'rock art'. I believe it was on an episode of "Skinwalker Ranch'. One type depicts literal details of their everyday world and the other type depicts the spirit world with esoteric symbols and beings. I am definitely no expert but it looks to me that both types are represented in places here. The bighorn sheep would be an example of the former and the triangular being with arms out and fingers down likely being an example of the latter. To them they were two distinct realities they lived amongst and from my own experiences I am inclined to believe they were not mistaken but I digress. If you run across that video I think you would find the information extremely enlightening. Thank you for another wonderful adventure.

Great find! As for being 350 feet up, remember that these glyphs could be 13-20k years old, and the landscape has changed over the millennia. The canyon floor was likely much higher when the artists did their work. I've seen some glyphs here in Nevada that were in the middle of nowhere, on the edge of an expansive valley. But clearly, that valley is a dry lake bed, and the glyphs were drawn on the lakeshore. --- I wonder if the jagged white line represents lightning. Bur you're right to note that it's hard to decipher these glyphs using our 21st-century minds. We see things that didn't exist way back when.

@desertgecko4549
@desertgecko4549 2 күн бұрын
@@randomvintagefilm273 Yeah, Utah glyphs are generally thought to be not as old as the ones here in northwest Nevada. Around Winnemucca, the glyphs are estimated to be between 10k and 15k years old, with some estimating them to be from 20k years ago. But considering that the last ice age uncovered this region around 20k years ago, it's doubtful many petroglyphs are that old -- and certainly no older. And in Utah, YMMV. Regardless, this was a great find!

Always enjoy your videos - as a native of the southwest they are meaningful. A couple of comments - at 5:16 when you pause the drone to focus on the panel, there is actually another panel higher up on the right. Second - the bare ground beneath the initial panel speaks to some type of human occupation or alteration. It could have been a space for temporary habitation but it is distinct from the surrounding area and has a well defined boundary that suggests that it may have been altered at some time in the ancient past.

What a great find! This is the best untouched discovery you could want. The ancient art is so intriguing and mysterious it elicits an almost emotional response in me. Jeff, I think these are story boards. When these people went on a hunt and had a story to tell of how great they were at hunting and also to mark where they found food. Others know that food lives in this place. As an artist that is what strikes me about most of the rock art. Other things I've noticed is that they also tell others where things like water and shelter are located. Like bill boards alone the hiway. What do you think?

Those were the vloggers of their day, "posting" pictures of things that moved them in their life. They must have had some pretty long ladders to do artwork that high. Maybe they learned that pictures lower to the ground were prone to vandalism or erosion. Maybe they wanted them to be seen from afar. We will never know. Congrats on 300,000 subscribers! What an amazing discovery and fun adventure! Thank you Jeff for sharing your experiences with us! I don’t usually comment as I watch videos on my TV and it doesn’t allow for comments but for this one I had to go grab my phone just so i could comment! (And pause/zoom in a lot lol) At 10:20 it looks like 12 people standing in a line- got me wondering if maybe these are “maps” to communicate locations of hidden caches of food/weapons/supplies with or w/out shelter, and whether it was enough for small or large groups of people. The “wagon” if viewed as being connected to the symbols just before, kinda looks like a cave/door entrance and the “wagon” part might’ve indicated how many rooms/areas/caches or told how many of something to get to it (like 3 days walk, or go past 4 {landmarks} and the symbol above it gives the direction. Definitely fun to try and imagine what they might have been trying to communicate. The “corn” or tall stick person with many arms- could even indicate a measurement of height for the cache/supplies/shelter- like it will be up on the cliffs roughly 5 person lengths from the ground? 🤷🏻‍♀️ also, is there some sort of agency or national tribal council that you can/or do report your discoveries to for documentation and possibly preservation/archeological studies? Especially something like you found in this video, would be amazing to photograph and have in history museum

A large number and variety of petroglyphs there, Jeff! Great find! I think we try to read a lot into their meanings, which some are fairly obvious, like the sheep, etc.; but as you said, we'll never know the real intent or objects being symbolized. However since you asked our opinions on it, mine is that they are MOSTLY just ancient graffiti! Something youths of the tribes did, to depict some bird, animals, shaman or people doing things they would have witnessed in their lives. Perhaps, there was even some competition, or others just seeing some drawings, etc., were inspired to make their own. It seems that all peoples have some with a desire to express themselves via drawings and art, and even much of today's graffiti is done by 'street artists!' Either way, thanks again for sharing this large display.👏 I think the reason they were so high up is because that's where the flat walls lend themselves to the art, and solid color backgrounds create the best contrast for their work. 😊👍

Happy New Year, Jeff & everyone who enjoys this kind of stuff. This was excellent. I love Petroglyphs & Pictographs though I am much more experienced with Hawaii than the US Southwest. But it is truly an amazing peer into a vanished world we will never understand completely. Keep them coming! Aloha from Oakland

I saw a smaller panel of similar art to the white being with zigzags deep in big bend state park, not documented anywhere I could find.
