Thanks Tim. I play in a rock duo with guitar and bass w/beat buddy drum machine...I use two Friedmen small amps stereo for that full sound. We can play small micro stages or a large concert stages. A small town classic rock, blues and country band that gets the gigs. The H-9 in both effects loops is my Swiss Army knife. You are a killer guitarist and teacher. I'm one of those slow learners but once I get it, I get it.

I began to play wet/dry/wet with digital delays in the 80's. In the 90's I was so pissed of by theses cold FX that I stopped to use them. But when I re-discovered the good old tube, tape or bucket brigade delays, I realized how much they sound better. The key is to find the delay witch react as you want with your amp. The hunt is long. Since a decade, I play the JHS PantherCub, the Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man 1100TT, the Boss Dm2 Waza Craft, the Way Huge Echo Puss and the Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail. I've tested something like 100 analog delays. These ones are the top 5. In the studio, the Gurus delays (tube echo) are great too. For live application : one amp dry, the other one with a delay (mixed) : parallel setting with a mono delay is easy. In the studio, I use reampers to plug the pedals in the ProTools. To my humble opinion, the only good digital delays are made by Eventide. I like the way they sound.

This is a producer's approach to the effects use for sure. I can't help but think about the players most known for their use delay use going the OPPOSITE direction though. Most people can't tell exactly what The Edge is playing because he uses the effect as a part of his composition. The "Bad" riff is a great example. He is playing far less than it sounds like he is because the repeats are at an equal volume.

Just what I needed on delay’s . I have all of the line 6 pedals with the four memory’s each. Makes a heavy pedal board.I like my Fernandez Pro Revolver. It’s a lot of fun with a slide. I put a F spaced Scream’n Demon in it a few years ago. Love it. But now a hum has shown up with the sustainer pickup with the switch in the middle & neck position. Would like to put in a sustainiac system because the bridge pickup is not dependent on the battery. Just in case it dies. Chow.

Thanks so much for this, one of my all time favourite guitarists Michael Schenker uses delay like this, it's almost like a reverb that blooms for want of a better description, the main thing being you don't hear the repeats.
@GearGasms4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s definitely a unique sound and one I’ve never really thought to try getting from a delay
@vintagesound81124 жыл бұрын
Yeah he uses two dd3’s these days. I’ve followed Schenker for a long time and saw Msg in the 80’s. I prefer his tone back then and with UFO though, there was echo on his guitar but it definitely wasn’t coming from a pedal, that’s the sound I’ve always tried to recreate when I played live with delays but in the end gave up. The delays seem to spoil the tone. I play solos dry now, just sounds better to me.

Tim Pierce you are the man! Love your phrasing and note choices. Always sounds so incredible. I’m a delay junkie to by the way. Always have delay on. Makes everything sound so much sweeter! Memory man is also 1 of my all time favorites. I use the tone print for it on my flashback for about 70% of everything I play. Also like the echoplex and a delay called echolette don’t know if you’ve ever heard of it I believe it’s a old German tube tape delay machine. I use that toneprint a lot for cleans. But yeah delays I could spend days playing with they’re absolutely the best thing for your guitar sound in my opinion. Just humongous epic sounds.

I remember back in the early 70's my older brother had acquired a Les Paul Studio Model, and an Orange Amp with one 4x12 Cabinet, he had a Flanger and a Fuzz-Wah-Diddy Pedal. Just that setup provided such a wide range of sounds that I felt like I could never exhaust all the possibilities. These days with my Fender Amp and Fender Fuse software I can drop in whatever pedal in whatever spot in the signal chain I want. The only thing I need to add is a volume pedal, and that is next on the list. Thanks Tim.

Great breakdown of delay ‘art’ and good vid title too. Love the concept of how an effect can be ‘hidden’ via phrasing and ensemble context. Very interesting and informative video. Here’s a question for you. How do you get that classic 70’s live delay sound like Schenker in UFO and other classic live recordings of that era? It just doesn’t sound like the modern delay sound, which makes me think it was put on at the desk or maybe post production? I’ve tried all kinds of delays in the loop, up front and none sound right for live performance. Maybe Joe Bonamassa ditched his delays for the same reason, chasing the unattainable tone.
