Derbyshire is definitely a place we need to further explore (I have ancestors from Derby). We've driven through the Peak District a couple of times on our way to other places and both times the scenery was lovely. I recall driving the A57 down to Manchester and thinking that we need to take some time to check out this area with its forested hills and reservoirs. So far our only real experience in the area has been Chatsworth and Bakewell which is well worth the 2.5 hour drive from our flat in Gloucestershire.

I am impressed . The drive to Looe from Tavistock is quite a trip taking in Gunnislake but you are rewarded with the beautiful scenery on the way through the valley and one of Sarah's pasties , which come as close to the old recipes as any , and a beer in Looe . Top crimp , raised crimp ,side crimp and number of actual crimps is not written down anywhere and as with the Cornish mile and pronunciation of Cornish place names they are intended to trap unwary tourists and have become the myth of legend , like so much of Cornwall today . I lived in the furthest flung part of Cornwall ( where the film ' Straw Dogs ' Dustin Hoffman and Susan George was made and shown annually at the cinema in Penzance for decades ) and they are probably the exponents of winding up tourists . This was the district of Cornwall where the last speakers of Kernewek , the Cornish language was spoken and the only place that made pasty pies decades ago . A true English breakfast how my Mum used to cook it ( a House Cook in Chelsea back in the 1930s) , included devilled kidney and black pudding , and no baked beans ( very much a WW2 introduction from your neck of the woods but loved ever since - I love Boston baked beans and clam chowder by the way - but not mixed together though ! ) which may sound gross and definitely no no for vegies , but the flavour of black pudding with tomatoes and buttered toast is really delicious and rich . The Cornish have a white pudding or hogs pudding which is entirely different . More like a bland polony that takes up flavour when cooked in a sauce . Fish and chips in Cornwall is great , but you will not find certain fish on the menu . What we call ' Rock Salmon ' ( Lesser Spotted Dogfish ) and 'Rock Eel' ( Conger Eel ) is not available . The Cornish won't eat it , not even on Tom Bawcocks Eve when they " supped on sebem (7) sorts of fish " , but is either dumped or sent up country to the London markets . Its a delicious fish when treated properly ( aired a couple of days to remove the ammonia smell ) is pure muscle with a single cartridge bone . The fishermen always dropped some off on my doorstep to cook myself . I could help myself to a variety of fish at Newlyn Market too as I knew Skipper Robert Stevenson and have had the pleasure to take the wheel of his trawler PZ185 on testing to Tater Du light and back to Penzance Harbour . Tavistock is a short trip from Dartmoor and we would take the long route back to Cornwall have a few beers in Widdecombe and park up on one of the Tors on a clear night and watch the shooting stars until first light . Two Rivers a beautiful place for a morning paddle on warm days . Then on through Tavistock , Tamar Valley , Callington ( avoiding the Ginsters factory !) eventually picking up the A30 . When you return , try to arrange your trip around one of the Feast Days of the Cornish saints , St .Agnes ( with their Pasty Company and Mortons bakery ) , St . Just , St. Ives , St. Mawgan etc , which are a hoot and last as long as you can stand up , with lots of food , sports , fun and games and plenty of booze of course .

I would like to know when beans on toast was made part of a full English break fast! Traditionally the full English has a list of ingredients broken into three courses just like a dinner menu. 1. Starters Cereal with milk Porridge (rolled outs boiled water or milk then cream [try whiskey snuck in]) Yoghurt with fruit Fruit juice 2. Cooked food (just listed) Bacon (unsmoked or smoked) Sausage (variety of types, Lincolnshire, pork, beef and now veg [just examples]) Black pudding White pudding Kidneys Kippers (smoked fish) Eggs (all the different varieties of prepared egg) Tomatoes (all the different varieties [normally tinned Italian plum]) Beans Bubble and squeak (usually made from the previous days leftover potatoes and maybe fried onions, fried usually lightly flavoured with beef or pork dripping up like a lumpy stodgy pattey. this is where your fried hash brown things came from, British mums needing not to waste anything during the wars 3. Toast Best fresh thick slices white bread Whole grain French baguette. (If you must) Real butter. Normally slightly salted All the different jams (American jelly’s) you can think of Marmite (always, always just a scraping on the butter) Pastries (if you must) Theoretically this is the English breakfast menu you could choose from some times odd ideas from people just get added somehow spinning it into things like beans on toast which normally is eaten for tea time (around 6pm) not to be mixed up with high tea (around 3pm for tea crumpets, tiny cakes and delicate finger sandwiches [two slice sandwich crusts cut off and quartered])

My biggest complaint lately is chippies who are so busy they don’t cook the chips long enough. They are rather anemic looking and not very golden brown… But for now we are back on our healthy eating plan until our sons get here and a little over a week. Protein shakes for breakfast, lots of fruits and veggies throughout the day! If you want to see what I drink for a protein shake, I have a homemade one I do six days a week. The tin miners had ate the dessert and savory pasty on one, but Dara can give you a better explanation than my pathetic attempt. I'm from Torquay, but my mother's mother lived in Devonport, and every time we visited for the day she gave us enormous pasties with a top crimp. We never called them 'Cornish' or 'Devon', and, since Devonport is just across the Tamar from Cornwall, I always assumed that 'Granny in Plymouth' was Cornish and was giving us Cornish pasties. Very many years later, I did a bit of family history research and discovered that she wasn't Cornish, or even Westcountry, at all, despite her strong accent - she was born in Holloway, London, and lived there at least until she was 12! But there were indeed once tin mines in Devon - Tavistock is a 'stannary town'. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stannary?wprov=sfla1.

@@kennethgarland4712 I really appreciate you sharing these family history stories, as that is a lovely part of my channel. Isn't it funny all the family lore we have, and then we discover it's not all true? And food based family memories are of course my favourite ;-) We really adore Tavistock. It's such a great place to visit! I do hope you check our my Tavi video if you haven't already. kzbin.info/www/bejne/raS9Z3-pgbh1mrs Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Did the 'Y' fall off 'PASTY' and they can't be bothered to replace it, or did it fall off 'COMPANY' and they replaced it with the 'Y' from 'PASTY'. I guess we'll never know. 🙂

Your poor fish looked awfully flaccid. When you went to pick it up it flapped like a flag on a windy day 🙂 Top tip, if getting takeaway, and you've a way to go before eating. Crack the box (we don't do boxes round here), or loosen the paper to let excess steam out. I always get my fish separate, and tear a corner off the wrapper to let the steam go. Save it getting too soggy on the drive home. Everything else looked good, though i laughed loudest when i heard the phrase 'vegetarian full English' 😂

Haha, yeah, I knew some subs would get a kick out of the vegetarian comment LOL! Good advice on the fish! It does always get soggy...

Susan on @Rhubarb and Cod made a lovely video about rhubarb crumble ice cream… i’ve been craving it ever since! My friends were able to experience two weeks in England with lovely weather seeing all kinds of amazing places. They needed to have some good old rain when we visited those Cornish fishing villages just so they could have the proper English experience 😉

Pineapples, are not actually a fruit as each nodule is a berry that is then clumped together. A definition of a fruit is that it has internal seeds. Berries are a gene pool all on their own.
