Thanks Paul! Your video helped me repair a Dell Inspiron 5758 power button by taping a small plastic notch on top of the SMD button. After the repair I entered the BIOS to enable "Power on when AC connects" to have a backup power-on trigger.

That's fantastic to hear that you had success. Seems that this sort of fault is a bit of a design hiccup with several models. Good idea about the "power on when AC connected".

Excellent.... You could likely be a watchmaker. Fine precision there mate... Talk about how the little things can bite one in the arse. I have been living with my dodgie power button for 5 years now. I just keep the computer on at all times..

Thanks for the vid, I was able to replace my broken button as well.

Nice work :) I have seen quite a few Dell laptops come through here with the same fault. They typically come along with some plastic as well from the owners pushing really hard.

Thanks - good thing I had someone earlier tell me that getting the switches off the FPCs was easy-stuff ;) Last time I tried it was with the soldering iron, and it did NOT go well. Thankfully now with that new hot air station it was a breeze (pun intended?).

So my sister's laptop that she's been working on *does* have a broken power button! Thanks for this vid, I wasn't sure what the issue was but I see that hers looks like your broken one.

Friend, thank you for sharing all your knowledge. I'm with the same problem, only here in Brazil. This new button that has been placed has some specification / model, I will look here to buy and make the exchange. thank you!

Wow, you and Rossman certainly like your flux! We would have been castrated if we had poured that much on a PCB. I like your flux bottle, it is the same type I used over 25 years ago.

hello Paul Daniels! mine just died I believed has a ground because every time I connected to the original charger the light of the charger which is green goes off I have to disconnected the charger to see the light again I tried another charger same as the original and again the same result this could be the collapsed power button in this model or any other chip just got fried..?

It's probably a shorted input MOSFET.

That's the "worst" bit in many ways, those stumbling years, where you're gravitating towards your own theme / style, and knowing when you look back later it's going to be cringe-worthy in many ways. . . sounds like growing up. Right now I need to work towards the following improvements; * Video camera that'll record more than 18 minutes ( thank you camera & H264 consortium for placing that artificial limit on us ) * Microphone that doesn't sound like I'm talking through yesterday's socks * Better tripod/offset stands/booms so I can get the camera in position without it WOBBLING because it's sitting on my desk * Microscope + cam ( okay, that's for my actual work, backlog of jobs needing greater visual precision than I have :) )

Hey Paul, a pretty nice and informative video of a laptop power button repair, a really common issue on laptops, and also loved the fact that you used an iPhone part to fix a laptop. I also watched the dell pc mother/main board fix, I was in awe of your deep knowledge of that stuff, can you please refer me to some studying info? Thanks, and keep up the great work.
@pldaniels7 жыл бұрын
Hello, Payman Ghafoori, many thanks for the kind words. For me, the greatest study tool has always been the need (or want) to fix or solve something. When you have the desire to fix, it makes you willing to endure the frustration of trying to find a solution and also seems to make the mind more capable of remembering important things. That Dell PC motherboard fix was very frustrating because I could not find the proper schem/boardview, so I had to make many assumptions, likewise the WD MyBook HDD repair, a lot of lucky guesses! Always have a reason for doing a job, it makes it easier. It is always good when you can obtain schematics and boardviews for the equipment you need to service (electronically), as it helps you feel like you have a chance of winning. For studying, I do still keep a copy of "The Art of Electronics"; it's not really a learning book, more of a collection of reference material. I believe Dave Jones of +EEVBlog on KZbin had a more suitable studying book in one of his recent videos. Perhaps importantly too, don't try to learn everything at once, that's too overwhelming. Just learn what you need with each repair, and over time you will have learned many things ( Look at Louis Rossmann - he has an excellent collection of knowledge for Macbooks ).

Thanks a lot for the insight, Paul! Yes, I definitely have to agree that you need to be hungry if you want to find food (a good analogy, I guess). And yes I watch all of his videos because there is always something new to be learnt with every repair. I just started with repairing my laptop plastic hinge housing which had broken when it fell while it had the screen open and did thermal paste replacement and laptop cleaning (and it has lasted for 7 years since purchase) and was always wondering when it will fail and how the electronics work in them so that if the day comes I can fix it and found Louiss' channel and then yours, looking forward to learning from the best. For now I guess I'll just start with watching all of Louiss' basics of electronics, and continue on my way forward. Thanks for sharing the info and keep up the great work.

Anyone know if there is a connection amongst these that can control a flashing screen problem? I have off and on problem with the screen flashing with vertical bars. Not all the time but when it does it is constant...every second. Have run diagnostics but nothing shows as being bad.

Sir Paul please teach us how to build efficient fume extractor for Electronics repair workbench.
@pldaniels6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have a good extractor system now which isn't too expensive (about $200~$300 AUD) but works very well and does not need a hose. Can be made cheaper too if people use cheaper motor & filter

Yes, took me a lot longer to get to the switch assembly than I would have liked. The case design left me a bit confused in a few places, where I was trying to decide if i had a hidden screw or just another plastic catch.

Paul Daniels yeah I do open up PCs but laptops I stay off of. I hate it that they don't put memory and harddrives in an accesible bay in laptops anymore. I wouldn't be able to change out the hdd or add memory this way anymore. All these decisions of manufacturers are costs related I guess but I suspect its not all money they save for the consumers wallet but most is for their own.
@pldaniels7 жыл бұрын
I do wonder at times about their choices too. My biggest thought is that they're attempting to make more and more disposable devices; they might opt to say that they're helping prevent HDD and memory/SODIMM theft, which I know does happen a bit at schools where other students will, for either taunting or theft open up the panels old the older devices and grab the HDD/SODIMM, or swap them around (I see that a lot too). Either way, it's costing people now more in terms of labour for the repairs.
@maicod7 жыл бұрын
Paul Daniels I hadn't thought of the hdd/memory theft problem but even so its a big nuisance. When I'll buy a newer laptop one day, I hope I can still find a model with these bays.
