best way to keep these cool is to swap the foam heat pads on cpu and gpu with copper pads, and add paste...there used to be a company that sold the replacement coppers but stopped due to lack of demand.

I picked one of these up for £25 to play around with Ubuntu. I had the same problem but with me it was the damaged ram after UPS dropped it. I was going to upgrade it but as I’ve already changed the battery for £13, put a 240 gig SSD in at £25 and bought a much needed skin for £7 it wasn’t worth the £80 for the cheapest 2x4 gig of ram I could find. So I spent £5 on 2x2 which seems to be fine now. A really interesting video and I’ve subscribed.

It is the GPU that gets mega hot and so much will unsolder itself over time. Best to run the laptop on a cake rack or laptop cooler pad. I have had to swap the MBoard in mine due to this. Owned from new for 10 years. Is otherwise and good performer even after 10 years.

Enjoyed watching the vid. Its not really a beautiful laptop (also by design of wiring) huh. Did you check out the power plug at the laptop end ? Cause it had tape on it maybe it has a bit of a wire-break ?

When I consulted with they client they noted that it was regardless of the brick. Still, I'll wait to hear back from them if anything comes up.

Not bad. We commonly see 98-99 on the razers cpu. 1-2 degree away from shutdown.

It's crazy how close they run them to the edge. When you get elevated temperature environments like here it just pushes them right off the edge too many times.

yep. I would at least suggest an EC update to put the throttlepoint locked in at 90C or 92C or so as a precaution. You could nearly boil a pot of water on that heatsink :)

I just got another in today, it had no AC in mosfets or battery and i replaced those, plugged it in and the AC MOSFET started squealing and went up in smoke right in front of me.

1 bad diode that was shorted, I replaced it. I did find a shorted transistor as well (pq25) I think and replaced it as well, no change. Mosfet still smokes as soon as ac is plugged in. Doing same as yours except it does it without the batt plugged in. I'm looking at some more caps now and then going to See if perhaps something with the controller is at fault here. Very interesting, especially since last time I had the screeching fets, they were fixed by replacing but this time there is another issue at stake.

Hi I am facing exactly the same problem on my laptop Dell studio 1555. It shuts down evry 10 minutes or so. I am not a techie could you tell me in layman terms what is the issue?

i sent this in the beginning of the video but i think the tantalum compactor under or near the CPU would likely cause that issue

I think I would have, if mine, would have been to change the heat transfer paste, if two years ago the lint was cleaned. Also if charging the owner another 20 dollars for paste change, to put liquid metal on the cpu, not the gpu, but I am just being a klutz probably. good work paul.

I don't see any real world gains in using liquid-metal transfer compound for my clients. If they're elitist gamers or running their CPU at 100% 24/7 it might be worth the effort to get the extra 2'C cooling but for the machines passing over this desk, good ole dependable ceramic paste does the job.

Good evening myh Fujitsu life book A572/f turns off after 10minute no notice when I was using it after my battery got spoils about 2 day after and when it turns off I thought that the power cable shifted but not I check fan and cooling unit its working well and the CPU is 40°C/116°F , GPU 42°C/120°F ,Fan speed is normal not overheat sign ram, processor been checked so I think it was a kind of protection since the battery is not available, so i got a battery put it set stop watch after 10minute systems turnoff automatically i think is the motherboard issue what can I do to solve it

Paul I took my laptop apart......(blizzard in nova scotia canada) my laptop doesn't charge, i mentioned that before. i investigated the Mosfets and associated coils and found some other odd things. 398ohms to Ground. then with "assuming" the charging mosfets. i had nothing.......should i investigate this further or just leave it as is?

hmm... really not sure what to make of it yet? Do the MOSFETs have similar behaviours on diode mode tests if you check between drain and source (in both directions, should be something like 0.5V one way, and a higher value the other way). you're either measuring the V/CPUCORE or GFXCORE, or there's something slightly shorty on there. That said, I usually consider shorts anything below 0.05V; it's rather subjective :( Do you have a schem/boardview at all for it?

My thinkpad hits 85 under load. That has a i5 3320m. I couldnt imagine how hot this same laptop with the quad core i7 would run. Probably at least in the 90*s. I used a thinkpad w540 a few years ago with the quad core haswell i7 and that thing would throttle under load almost every time, but that one also had dedicated graphics.

At least the Dell has a bit of room in it for dissipation, though that said, the stacked cooler arrangement isn't the most idea. Just more reasons for me to make sure I never pick up a laptop that uses dedicated GPU.

They certainly run them hot. Hopefully this one will last long enough for the person to migrate to a new machine within 6 months.
