My parents used to buy huge tubs of secondhand "Sio montage" construction toys parts, and then spend hours assembling them while my brother and I were asleep. One year my brother got a parking garage as big as himself, with a moving elevator and cars. My parents later said that they loved to spend those evenings building and figuring out what to make with all the parts. Secondhand toys can bring a lot of joy!

My daughters "big gift" this year is a secondhand wooden dollhouse. I would set it up the night before even if it was new, so the difference would be hardly noticeable. I am very happy that an item like this gets to be re-used at an affordable pricing for me. 🙂 New doesnt come in a package for little ones. New is simply what they didnt own before.

So glad you’re talking about buying gifts second hand. I’m having to stop working full time this week because of my health. I felt really guilty buying a friend a second hand Christmas plate that I’m hoping to give a homemade sourdough loaf or loaf cake on. I was worried about what they’d think so it was encouraging to see you purchasing used items for your kids.

Great gifts! Love that you do not overflow your kids and also shop second hand. We have done that too and our kids never had a problem with it. This year our son will get a giant box of Lego bricks from my mom, all second hand. He loves Legos, has so many sets but doensn‘t want to take them apart to build new things. So he needs bricks 😅 you often can buy them in lots. Both of our kids will also get „an experience“ meaning they will get something fun they do with their godmother. It gives them one-on-one time and they love it! My daughter will go to a musical ond my son to a kids theater. I as a parent love, that means some beautiful memories and one toy less in the bedroom…

I found a wooden play kitchen at a thrift store that benefits shelter animals. It was already assembled and needed just a little clean up. My daughter loves it. Thriftmas is wonderful. For adults you need to give gifts, you might like the Icelandic tradition of books and chocolate. “The book flood” apparently happens this time of year because so much publishing happens in Iceland. It’s encouraged to stay up late reading and enjoying chocolate ❤ This has helped reduce stress for gift giving and you can individualize the chocolate for each person and then do a white elephant with the book, etc.

I do a similar ryme with gifts for my grandkids, Something you want, Something you need, Something to wear, and Something to read. It makes things so easy. And they are delighted. They know each gift is special, and something they want. I also give each one a gift card around $10 to something the can get or use on their own. Now, i only have 3 grandchildren, they are all over the age of 13. But, I use a similar theme for my grown children ( I have 2) but, it limits spending, and they get useful gifts.

We put hygiene products for the year in stockings too (fun shampoo/conditioner/body wash, new loofahs, new toothbrushes and toothpaste, deoderants and hair product etc). My MIL used to do this in our stockings and I always loved that she gave us useful items we will use up. We do do Elf on the Shelf but I got a discounted kit this year to make my life easier. I usually incorporate Xmas activities that the Elf brings like gingerbread house, make an ornament, lets watch a christmas movie and here is a pack of popcorn and m&m's to eat or it brings a fun chritmas cereal to eat that morning. It just moves around otherwise. I try to incorporate the Want/Need/Read/Wear as well. This year our kids get echo dot speakers for their rooms to listen to audiobooks, harry potter pajamas, a new pair of snow sneakers, a new lego set each, a boxed book set each and their stockings. They are spoiled by our family so won't want for anything.

Aww, I love the vintage stuff, and I have given my kids a lot of the same things leftover from my own childhood. I recently read the Felicity series with my daughter. They were my original Pleasant Company books. I also gave her my original Pleasant Company Kirsten doll I got when I was her age in 1993. ❤ I gave her all my original book series as well (Felicity, Addy, Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly). Our extended family decided to get her all of the historical series over the last couple years for Christmases and birthdays, and she now has the complete historical set. We started with Kaya, and started working through the series in chronological historical order. I have loved this bonding time with her so much...and she's learning history at the same time! Last Christmas, I also gave her my old View Master which was super nostalgic and fun. It's amazing what we've been able to find at my parents' house! Love that you guys are doing the same thing! ❤ Oh, and for ear piercing, a lot of tattoo places do piercing with a needle, the non-gun way. We found a great little shop that works with kids all the time and we were so pleased! We live generally in your area. Let me know if you are interested, and I can send you an Instagram DM with the name of the place. 😊

My daughters pediatrician's office does medical grade ear piercings and that's the route we went for her ❤ She didn't even realize it happened, I couldn't recommend it more! Most people dont realize this is an option so I thought I'd mention it. Love the stocking stuffer ideas and the thoughful gifts 🤗 Im so excited to set up Christmas for my kids this year! We just moved to Alaska and it actually feels like Christmas!

When I got my ears pierced Years ago (in the 1960s), my mom said I had to get them pierced at the doctor's office. After I got my ears pierced, my mom saw a jewelry place that used the same studs the doctor used and she went there.

I also got ear piercings as a child and it was a terrible decision my parents made for me. They never fully healed. After a pause I (still a child) even got them renewed and then I wore medical earrings for about 10 years. Still got inflammation regularly. Stopped trying wearing earrings a few years ago and hate the scars (although they are less visible now than a few years back). I was firstly pierced as a 5yo, later as a 8yo. I would never have asked for it myself, I think something that permanent should not be done to little kids. You won’t get a tattoo or a nose ring for a 8yo so why ear piercings? I know it is controversial but no damage done if you wait until they are teens and can at least somehow understand that it’ll be permanent.

By the way Natalie, not related to todays video but one a few weeks a go. I bought the battery operated candles with a timer that you had suggested from Amazon. They are AMAZING. When you put the option of candle, they really look like a real candle. Thanks for the recommendation. I love them

I felt all the nostalgia as you talked about the Elizabeth doll! I got one around 2005 for Christmas and loved to study the history around her era. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the ideas and inspiration!! Natalie, I was just trying to finish up my kids shopping and was thinking it's just too much! I want meaningful gifts but still want them to be happy with what they got. But it's not about the gifts, and I want my boys to know that!

I bought my daughter a little house on the Prarie set of books secondhand one year. She loved them. I always try to buy something educational or crafty for my kids. My suggestion for piercing ears is to find a good tattoo place with great reviews and health department scores and have them done there. I usually do a box for each child with pj's, their favorite snacks, popcorn, drinks, and then I'll buy a new Christmas movie to watch so we'll have a movie night. I usually just pick a day to hand it out.

I love that you found a Pleasant Company Elizabeth for Hailey. Such a treasure! I always wanted an AG doll (Kit!) growing up but as a kid between poverty and foster care, it just wasn't meant to be. Now I have 3 daughters and a wonderful, well providing husband. My two big girls (8 & 7) got AG Truly Me dolls last Christmas and my 4yo got a Bitty Baby. This year they are getting clothes and accessories. (have you seen the Bitty Baby pram? Oh, my goodness!) I am hoping within the next year or two my girls will be responsible enough for a historical character. My oldest and youngest are autistic and we play rough. 😅 I imagine it's different with just one little girl who can jump into the historical play and understands how to be delicate.

Hi Natalie, what a lovely relaxing video. I wish I knew about how you do Christmas with your children when mine were young, I was an only child and use to have a pillowcase full of presents not a stocking, so I carried on the same with my children, but your breakdown of how you buy things is lovely, I have put in used item and mine never mentioned that they weren’t new so that is a great tip for families. My daughter Hayley loved her Sylvainian families. Baby Jesus was in his manger Christmas morning when they woke up. We love going to midnight mass then Christmas morning Hayley, her husband (and his mum) and our 15 year old granddaughter Lilly will arrive to celebrate and she will stay overnight. Then at some point our son Richie and his wife will host for all the family for a day so all three children and all our grandchildren and we have ordered a Christmas escape room game I feel very blessed all our children don’t live far from us. Enjoy your week off and look forward to seeing you again in December God Bless your beautiful family xxxxx

My boys love the Hardy boys books too! I'm on the hunt for 31-40 affordably. I allow my kids to choose the books they want to read for homeschooling and these have made reading enjoyable for them and no longer a chore.
