I'm glad I found this review! Loosing oil - if not dripping through the seals - means it's burning it. That means the piston rings are faulty OR the piston sleeves are not completely round. This is unacceptable for ANY new car let alone a car which costs as much as an RS3. I'm starting to wonder about Audi as a high quality brand. You've convinced me to look at another manufacturer.

Hi Daniel. Thanks for making this video. I know exactly what you mean about some of the unwanted attention these awesome cars can receive. My pet hate is the tailgating some drivers do whether out of sheer inattention, to prove that their car is as fast as ours (not sure how dangerous driving achieves this goal as you mentioned in your video) or to goad us into racing. As Audi say themselves, we've nothing to prove. My brakes were squeaky too but I had new calipers and pads fitted all round. This kept them quiet for a few months but they still squeak from time to time. Thanks again for the video.

Oil consumption, start small 1. Check smoke coming from the exhaust while on boost (Turbo seals) 2. Since it's a new car was the breaking oil changed after 6k? Your piston rings may not be seated correctly
@watching_nyc6 жыл бұрын
You lost me with reasons 4 and 5. You clearly are too sensitive to own such a car. I've owned multiple performance cars including three audis. Get over it! These cars do have multiple quirks including eating lots of oil (vw's too). With regards to the attention you can't stand, it would be harder to find a car that is as understated as the rs audis today. Anything else with that kind of performance would be screaming "look at me!!" compared to that car. i think the dealers are likely right, you are "that guy" who will always find something to complain about.
@mrdanielknight6 жыл бұрын
And, you’re wrong. A majority of the attention I get are from people who know exactly what my car is, the twin ovals and sound usually give it away. So regardless of how understated this car is, I still get unwanted attention. My S3 didn’t drink oil. Other RS owners have said their cars don’t drink oil, giving me reason to believe this is an issue rather than a quirk. Yours truly, ‘that guy’.
@watching_nyc6 жыл бұрын
I'm totally willing to be wrong and eat my words. I did a 5 second google search though for "new rs3 burning oil" and it yielded quite a bit of chatter regarding questionable oil consumption. Unless you are the author of those posts, I stand by my statement. Your understated car is still an enthusiasts car so why would you expect to fly under the radar?! You should have bought a camry if you didn't want any attention. Btw, I totally agree with being annoyed with the brake issue considering you are using a stock setup.
@geneobrien89076 жыл бұрын
Mr. Daniel Knight oil consumption has been a problem for Audi's for years, there's even been a class action suit against them for this issue. For the cars involved, Audi either replaced the rings or replaced the engine. The problems related to the suit were not for the RS but it is the same company. Its likely the oil consumption in your car is going to get worse, as it did with the cars involved in the class action. I currently own a modified 2014 A5 and oil consumption is not an issue but my previous 2009 A4 started off using a liter every 1,000 miles and by the time I traded it in it was using a liter every 100 miles! I couldn't take advantage of the class action because I modified the car.

Hi Daniel, I bought mine in May 2016 and my thoughts on your points are: 1) Squeaky brakes - have had this periodically myself but not constantly. I find taking it for a run at higher speed and braking hard sorts it out for a while. 2) Oil - The only times my car oil has been topped up is at it's annual service (two times). Haven't had to top up at any stage so it does sound like yours is using more than it should. 3) I think I may be lucky here because I specifically use a dealership that is not the closest purely because their service is so fantastic. They are a bit more rural so have to rely on giving great service to keep customers coming back. Maybe that's the difference here and I'm just lucky. 4) Turbo lag - Agree that it's quite laggy. I drive in Dynamic and use the paddles all of the time. The only time it really frustrates me though is pulling away quickly, there's quite a delay before she gets going. 5) Attention - Sorry but can't agree with this one. You can't blame the car for other peoples stupidity. I think the RS3 is a relative wolf in sheeps clothing. Had a guy try to overtake me yesterday so I just pushed the loud peddle slightly to stop him cutting me up and when we got to the lights (and I'd got some lovely pops and bangs on downshift), he pulled up alongside me and said, "wow, I didn't realise it was such a quick car when I tried to go past until I heard all the exhaust sound, very nice!". I've had other cars that get a lot more attention. Hope you get things sorted though because over 2 years in, I'm still loving this car and mostly the sound!
@hardt_engineering27056 жыл бұрын
First of all, you can not technically compare the RS3 2016 with the RS 2018. The engines have almost nothing in common except for the number of cylinders. 1) Do you have on your 2016 RS3 the latest brake discs from Brembo which are also mounted on the RS3 facelift and not the one from SHW? Did you retrofit the brake ventilation? 2) The 2016 RS3 and 2018 RS3 consuming oil, but then there are again those who drive without problems. 3) The same in Germany, there are dealers who take care of the customer, but there are also those who only want the money and only do bad work. 4) Remember, it's a big single turbocharger that takes some time for maximum boost from low rpm The acceleration feels slow, because the maximum torque starts early and is fairly linear.
@Neutreus6 жыл бұрын
Interesting point re the engines, I didn't realise there were that little similarities. With them both being the 8V version, had assumed they were similar. I'd wondered why the likes of Litchfield could get an extra 50 BHP from doing the same re-tune/minor upgrades to the two different engines. Brakes wise, they are the standard brakes that came with the car, I've made no changes to the car (at this point). The acceleration is fantastic after that momentary delay and as you say is just a feature of the car. I've got used to it by now.

I have the same issues with the oil consumption, which after 5000 miles going through a litre and a half, is a bit much. Especially since my previous car (owned from new) was also a 5 cylinder engine and used no oil whatsoever. The tyre wear you need to get that looked at, my tyres are pretty much brand new still. I also get squeaky brakes, but put it down to having performance brakes (which another user mentioned). When you talked about the turbo lag, I also experience this, but have noticed that its the ESP or stability control kicking in ever so slightly. If you turn this off, the car turns into another beast entirely and does not do the supposed "turbo lag". Yep the attention thing is a pain, comes with the territory of owning a higher performance vehicle. Hope you got most of the niggles sorted out though.

Mr Daniel Knight if the car is not automatically kicking down, you've got paddles, you can just downshift. Regardless of the driving mode you've set, if the car is in too high of gear on an incline or decline using the paddles seems like an easy enough solution.

On an Oil Consumption test, it's based on mileage. They should have given you a mileage to return at. I don't know how it is where your at (across the pond) but 12/12,000 should be covered under warranty. There is also a pro-rating with tire issues by the tire manufacturer. You should require upfront in this situation, a print out of the before and after alignment. Any dealer that couldn't furnish that to you, isn't worth your time.

the oil problem really is a killer! If Audi can‘t tell you what causes the rapid loss of oil get rid of the car and request your money back. You may need to sue them that they do something about it.
@milenmi16 жыл бұрын
I have the exact same car & colour and I have zero problem. Oil consumption is only 30 cl every 5000 km which is completely normal considering the 400 hp. I bought it in Trier, Germany and it was delivered within 6 weeks and the factory ran my car for 70 km to make sure that the car was ok. They do this to all RS models. My previous A3 diesel 184 hp was the worst I've ever had. It was a bad production as it can happen. The same goes to any German brand cars including Porsche.

They simply don't give a shit and all turnaround the cars in quick time, I dont think its limited to Audi though and is a manufacturer wide problem. for my sins in that time i also bought a nissan leaf and it went back within 3 months i no longer have it, for more or less the same issues, shocking customer service and attitudes.

Driving steady will result in wear on the inside edge i.e motorway miles The car will be set up with a degree of negative camber from factory so the tire will have more pressure on the inside edge when not cornering hard They have done this to improve the grip and remove understeer as naturally with having a heavy 5cylinder engine over the front wheels and 4wd it will understeer Motorway miles it was not designed for, rs customers tend to prefer grip over wear As for the oil, some cars, some engines use alot of oil,
@NitroNuggetTV6 жыл бұрын
What your saying is correct, but adding to that, what generally causes noticeable/excessive tire wear is toe. This is most likely the reason Audi offered an alignment where they are more likely to adjust toe over camber. Also high powered cars have been known (maybe not this car) to be set up with slight toe-out from factory so under wide open throttle the wheel straitens out rather than toes inward. Again if you do lots of motorway miles this can put a lot of wear on the inside edges of the tires.

This fella doesn't understand what turbo lag is. D mode in these cars are programmed to be as fuel efficient as possible so throttle response is limited and the gearbox is reluctant to gear down requiring a tap of the downshift paddle. Oil consumption is a mixed bag, I had a GTI and Golf R, both would probably do 1L every 1k km. Currently my S4 does not exhibit any abnormal oil consumption whereas my brother's A6 with the same engine as the S4 albeit detuned does consume oil.
@Scott555ish6 жыл бұрын
What you refer to as turbo lag is not turbo lag at all but lazy throttle response. Small turbos on modern cars are quite capable of spooling up quick but unfortunately manufacturers tune them at part throttle for fuel efficiency and drive by noise tegulations. I've had a few Audi and all have had a lazy pedal so I always connect up a DTUK pedal box. For £150 it drastically changes the response and gives you about 9 more modes over and above your Dynamic, Sport and Comfort. It's also disconnects for dealers visits. I gaurantee you will love it and think you given the car 30% more power when in fact you haven't but just accessing it better.

Also with regards to the wheel alignment, I took mine to Kwikfit where they show you before and after results on their computer, plus you can watch them adjusting the wheels so you know they’ve actually done it. I’m always sceptical of main dealers saying they’ve done this and that when they know there’s no proof of their claims. I bought a new 2016 RS3 a couple of years back and had pretty much the same experience as you. The worst of all the problems was the squeaky brakes, it was an absolute nightmare to drive at slow speeds and in traffic because of this and it's one of the main reasons that made me sell the car after 5 months of ownership. Like you, I only found out this was a common problem with RS3s (and TTRSs) after I purchased it, apparently this issue dates back to the first gen RS3 and Audi hadn't solved it by the time I bought mine. They clearly still haven't fixed it. During the 5 months I left my RS3 with 2 separate Audi dealers for 5 days each and the dealerships both told me they couldn't reproduce the problem and just took apart the braking system and cleaned it. I showed them videos I took of the squeals and they just said they need to experience in person, but could not reproduce. The brakes were okay for 200 to 300 miles each time after cleaning, but they started squealing again after that. Hilariously, the first Audi dealership told me I should "Drive it like I stole it" and this would fix the problem. The whole ownership experience was a total joke considering I paid almost £50k for that car. Jeremy Clarkson even complained about the squeaky brake problem in a TTRS he reviewed on the Grand Tour. Audi service were shit for me, plain and simple. As a potential future RS /R8 owner I wasn't listened to so they aren't getting my money again (I've owned 4 Audi's previously, including a TTRS with no brake squeal). I also had the oil consumption 'problem' you had and was told it's a non-issue and I should expect this from the V5 engine. I only drove mine about 5k miles and had to top it up regularly, it wasn't a massive deal just another annoyance. The DSG gearbox being slow to respond was also a bugbear for me in normal drive mode, it did not react like a performance car should in certain situations, e.g. going up a hill. Regarding your tyres, hate to say it but 10k is normal on a sporty car with 400hp, there's nothing you can do about that apart from purchase new tyres. Same goes with the pricks trying to race you, there's nothing you can do apart from ignore them or pull over and let the tailgating morons go past you. Anyway, my solution to all these annoyances was to sell it and buy a different car and I haven't regretted it one single bit. To be fair I didn't lose anywhere near the amount of money on the RS3 I thought I would. Good luck!! Hopefully these problems will get resolved over time.

I've never know anbybody that moans so much about performance cars. You should have know what you were getting into when you bought a car like this. The oil consumption is a natural thing that happens in performance cars, I have to change my oil every 3k on my Mazdaspeed 3. You are going go through tyres very quickly especially if you have soft compound tyres and they are going to wear on inside as performance cars are usually slightly cambered to increased traction. I agree that Finance companys like Audi and VW etc are not the greatest to deal with and do not help you out well. You seem to be moaning more about service, people and you have proven you don't know anything about cars in general.

Mate you are talking absolute crap... Honestly, seven times in 16000kms..... That is no where near normal consumption regardless if it's a performance car or not. Granted it may use a little extra during the initial run in period while everything begins to seat itself, however again no where near what he says he is using. Softer compound?????? This is not F1 mate. Road going performance tyres are designed for the road plain and simple, they are not designed for the track (obvious from how poorly they perform on the track compared to a race compound). Therefore they are designed for longevity as well as moderate handling (tread pattern) performance and a higher top speed over regular tyres. That and the brand name is the premium you are paying for. He has every right to moan... He has paid a considerable amount of money on a premium brand that supposedly holds itself to an extremely high standard; and if it's not working as advertised than it needs to be fixed. Mazdaspeed, give me a fucken break...

subzerostorm You are telling me that you don't change your oil or have a service after 16000kms ?!?!? I wouldnt want to buy a car off you in that case. He said 6 times and also its 16,000miles. That still works out at just under every 3k. These engines are 2.5ltr 5 pots they will drink oil end of. It's a know fact. There a major differences in tyre compounds even road legal ones. You can have semi slicks (Nankang NS2R) or softener compounds (Michellin PilotSports) or cheap tyres that just don't degrade or grip. At the end of the day you ain't gonna put on some cheap ass tyres on a performance car are you?? NO. And you will go through them, roughly every +-10,000miles. If you think that you are just paying for the brand on tyres then you need to go watch some KZbin clips on the stopping differences between cheap shit tyres you buy and quality tyres. And to make yourself look stupid, tire tread doesn't actually do anything for "handling" as your previously said. Tire Tread is designed so that water can escape from underneath the tire and stop aquaplaining. So if you want to act like you know shit about cars then be my guest coz really you ain't got a clue you cheap ass bitch

He said 10,000miles, which in my head equals 16,000kms cause we use the metric system in Australia you fuck knuckle. I didn't state how often I change my oil, you just assumed cause you are always changing yours I must do the same (which I can only assume yours must be pissing oil everywhere). I don't change it on my new car, only top it, Mercedes do all the servicing. My old S3 I would top it up when needed and drop the oil/filter myself once every 8000-10000kms, again inline with the manufacture. Tyre tread doesn't do anything for handling, improves it in the wet doesn't it....???? Also, fuck mate you aren't allowed to run full slick tyres on a public road therefore if your tyre requires a tread pattern; that said tread pattern design would affect the overall contact patch on the road, thus improving or degrading grip... We are talking about road going performance tyres, not race tyres. But I guess, at this point I should just be happy you have spelt your name correctly let alone spelling aquaplaning*** correctly. It even states the effect tread has on the Michelin website you goose, here enjoy the link to your quoted tyre.... www.michelin.com.au/auto/tyres/pilot-sport-4 I ain't got a clue? Hmmmmm coming from a Mazdaspeed3 owner. Fuck off back to pleb city with your front wheel drive nonsense.

read a manual, its normal for Audi to top up certain amount every 1,000k's same for VW cars also bmw does the same and unsure for Merc cars but read your manual that comes with the car.

I have had 2 of these since December (first one got rejected) and have never had an issue with brake squeal - I find that occasional hard braking is the answer. Audi 'service'? I am with you all the way on that one. The rejected car had an intermittent brake servo failure resulting in 90% brake loss which was witnessed by Audi Assist - the dealership obviously could find no fault and wanted to toss me back the keys after a month. Had to go to the top of Audi UK to get that resolved - went to pick it up after the engine out servo change only to find that the dealer had stacked the car. Rejected it. They sourced a replacement with just about every option ticked apart from CCBs so not a bad outcome in the end.

Got to the same town at the same time, bloody brilliant....... Cheers for the belly laughs mate!!!!!! And yes, your wheels obviously weren't aligned correctly for them to be wearing on the inside edge with only low klm's under them.... Brake squeal fix; smash the accelerator till your eyes go blurry, then smash the brake pedal just as hard = no more brake squeal..... You're welcome.........

I have the same car. 2 months into it mind. 18 plate btw. No squeaky brakes. I did get run off the road by a lorry and damaged a rim (£880 those rims btw) tracking wasn't noticeably affected but got it done anyway (Not by Audi) it wasn't spot on on any wheel so it didn't come with spot in tracking but they did provide a colour print out showing before and after. I recommend getting it done at a specialist place! I haven't noticed any high oil consumption yet but as I said only had it 2 months and I've only done about 1800 miles in it. Now the turbo lag. You will have to adjust how you drive it I'm afraid. Regardless of dynamic or comfort I will actively swap between D and S by simply pulling the gear stick down and release. If I'm pulling away from roundabout or anytime I need throttle response it goes in S then once I'm moving a simple pull down puts it back in D and it goes back to changing more sensibly. Now unlike just about everyone, I'm quite quick round corners and roundabouts no matter what I drive but if I'm in D then I pre empt the lag by applying the throttle early just before the apex so that by the time I'm coming out the corner it's going again and the lag is not a issue. Any further questions, feel free to ask. Mike.

Completely agree, had the brake squeaking issues since day one. My local Audi finally sorted it by adding dampeners to the brakes and explained that this was a FOC factory refit due to widespread brake issues. I also have had excessive wear on front inner tyres. I understand it is because the factory setup puts 255 on front and 235 on back. So basically wider tyres on front to counter under-steer from the power. Still I don't agree that the tyres should wear this much. Also agree on the dynamic/comfort setting there is no in between. However I have not had the oil issue as you mentioned. Nice video though.
@DIgitusSmartas6 жыл бұрын
why they didn't put 255's all round. Thats just stupid having a wider front than rear.

Supposedly the ceramics get a glaze on them from light use. I think you have to do a really hard stop with them to get the glaze off. Like 100mph to 0 full ABS.

All big German car brand dealership service is an absolute joke. I took my previous Mini to get serviced and it's first MOT at Berry Heathrow. As soon as the service and MOT was done the plan was to drive to a festival that night. On the journey there we realized there was no AUX cable. I also noticed that as I fitted a short aerial, I kept the original one in the passenger footwell net. Yes they say take your valuables out your car before you give it to them but a AUX cable and an old aerial, really? Anyway I complained to them and they said that the staff don't take anything from cars. First I got questioned why I phoned so late if I had stuff missing from my car and proceeded to state my excuse of being at a festival was not good enough. They also repeated themselves "We ask you to take your valuables out your car", which is odd as 10 seconds before you said your staff don't take anything from cars? Then as a measure of goodwill they "asked the staff to try to find out what happened". Of course she came back saying nothing happened.... Fucking pathetic, stealing a £6 AUX cable and like a £10 aerial then not owning up to it or just giving compensation as a goodwill gesture. On the 3 hour round trip that AUX cable would have come real handy.

Hi Daniel. I've owned two Audi A6s since 2005 (a1999 which I just crashed end of May '18 that had over 270,000 miles on it & an '08 quattro with 53,000 miles when I bought it in June). A fix for the brakes is to change your pads to a ceramic or semi-metallic aftermarket set. My car squeaks too when I come to a complete stop. Must be the composition of the OEM pads or something. As for the oil leak I found using Blue Devil Stop Oil Leak seems to me to stop the burning and consumption of oil. There are two different types of this product you'll need. One is in a larger blue bottle and one in a smaller bottle. I added the larger bottle first then topped off the oil level. I then drove my A6 quattro for a few weeks and checked the oil level. It was a little low, so I added the second smaller bottle (says it's for the rear main seal) and topped off the oil level again. I'm happy with the results so far. These products claim to "renew" the seals to like new condition. I'm not sure how, but they seem to work for me. I recommend Every Audi owner with oil problems try Blue Devil Stop Oil Leak. I'm actually getting better gas mileage.

Hi Daniel, I have a 2.0 TFSi A5 Black Edition and it is currently with Audi after it failed the Oil Consumption Test. I took it them after I noticed it was drinking oil. I was topping up the oil every 2 to 3 weeks by the time it went in. They've advised new pistons which they say should rectify the problem. Will let you know how I get on.

Only legit wrong is the last thing he noted, if you have any form of performance cars you will get challenged by camry's, corollas and the likes. If he drove any Audi (same goes for every car from VW ownership) he would know oil top up is pretty normal and it would be in his manual, comes to think of it even BMW does it. Brakes well they are performance brakes and they need heat so don't drive like a nana.

On a S5 V8 FSI engine, not TFSI however, was burning so much oil I had a oil consumption test. Was found to be in tolerance... got to the stage of 1Litre per 500 miles of driving, and then blue smoke. Another oil consumption test (after many trips to Audi), the oil consumption test failed. Full engine replacement under warranty essentially. The car had c.40k on the clock and was 4 years old. I put most of it down to poor service schedules. I would never leave 24months between services (flexible Audi sevice). I think if I was the first owner of the car, did a running in service after 1k, and then dropped the oil every 5k, I bet the engine wouldn't have failed. Short story - over service, i.e every 5k miles. Then Audi have nothing to come back on.
