I also worked in Japan for several years and learned a couple of interesting aspects about the culture and language there. First, I learned that the fact that Japan was so isolated for much of its history that its language evolved homogeneously. Thus, it didn’t need to adapt (as much) in a way that would get "outsiders" to understand. In other words, generally, native Japanese language speakers have a more unified collective understanding of what is being communicated, often in different ways that aren’t in the form of the spoken language itself, because much of the language evolved without much external influence and need to adapt to that influence. And what is understood from spoken language is from a large set of shared assumptions that go unspoken. A lot more is implicit than explicit. All on a relative basis of course. Secondly, Japan is notorious for engaging indirectly in conflict. So culturally, it’s more “expected” to not address things as directly, especially when the risk of offending someone is a possibility. Granted, both of these are pretty large generalizations, which are slowly changing as the culture is changing, but largely, elements of these still hold true. Another interesting note about certain lean concepts like kanban, gemba, pokayoke, etc., derived from the Japanese language is that they came out of a very narrow segment of Japanese business culture and were exported to the rest of the world. In fact, they are not widely pervasive in Japanese business culture more broadly. Love this content.

Love your clips... One feedback: there's quite a bit of echo in the audio and it takes some getting used to. But it can be quite distracting and drive new audience away.
