Planning is very important when you open a new business. To jump into it without planning and analyzing standard startup costs makes the endeavor riskier in an already risky business. 80% fail in the first year. Everyone who will make this leap knows that the first time you talk to an accountant and the banker that approves your loan knows this.

Great insights into what to expect. I’ve been attempting to set myself up to open my own restaurant. I am from south Louisiana and I’ve been cooking for 6 years now, I’m 22. Throughout high school and college I worked as a line cook and during that time I’ve worked privately for hire countless events for friends and families (weddings, parties etc.) I’ve also had my own 3D print business with my drafting degree. However the most expensive part of that business was my degree and printers. I never needed an investor or business loan before. I believe I can show the beautiful state of Colorado what amazing true Cajun and Creole food taste like and I think they will love it. I am just not certain on convincing an investor a drafter turned cook can.

Hey Anton, I appreciate your honesty in this video. I have zero experience in running a restaurant. I worked in restaurants performing various duties in my late teens, but I'm in my early 40s now and I know a lot has changed. However, I'm passionate about food. I love to cook and I love to serve people. But it's more than just cooking, it's the culinary arts I love so much. I live in a place that doesn't have a lot of "good" food. But it's a good community. It's a big small town. I have dreamed my whole life about owning a restaurant. I know it's difficult. I don't live in a fantasy world. But in one part of the video, you talk about how you used to travel but now "there are no sick days". I guess I'm scared to give up certain freedoms that I have right now. I work from home, I make 6 figures (in a fairly cheap area in the country to live), and I get to enjoy a lot of time off; including a 2 week holiday break every year with my current company. So how did you convince yourself to give up your freedoms to chase your passions?

2:11 It’s not a bad idea because fear kills peoples plans/goals. However financially planning should be done with any business. I’m not in the restaurant business I’m in the automotive business my first business failed then 5 years later I opened my second business 5 months before Covid and if I didn’t financially prepare it would have failed. I basically worked 2 full time jobs, lived like a broke college kid, paid off all my debts minus my mortgage and saved my ass off for 5 years I didn’t borrow any money to open my business. I bought some quality used equipment over time at good prices because I didn’t wait until I needed it so I found deals, some equipment may or may not come with a building so I just saved money for that stuff, then when it was time to open I found a great location and just did it I didn’t allow myself to think about it too long because of the fear. What this man said about being hands on is one of The best things you can be told it’s not gonna be a vacation ur not gonna have all this free time, ur not gonna make a ton of money from the jump. IMO if you can’t even get urself out of debt and save up a bunch of cash even if ur gonna borrow money to start ur business (i wouldn’t borrow money to start personally) you shouldn’t open any business you have to be really good at managing money so if you can’t get ur personal finances in check ur not gonna be able to manage ur business financially. Most people don’t wanna hear anything business owners like myself or this man has to say but we’re just being real. If it was easy and a quick get rich thing owning a business everyone would be doing it successfully but it’s not the case. Most people can’t keep the doors open on a restaurant for a year this man ain’t lying he’s just bein real.

I'm thinking about opening a little breakfast spot. Im definitely nervous about starting it. I really do not no anything about it and im ready to learn to jump into this. As I said I don't know much about it as in who to speak to how to get the food products. And to budget money when buying the food product and what to price it on. Who do I talk to about getting the food. Or do I jist get it from local stores. Might sound stoopud but it is somthing I want to know whether its stoopid or not lol. Definitely keep dropping!!!

You should be nervous 😂 the restaurant business is not for the faint. It’s the hardest business in the world to be successful in. With that being said, you can certainly be successful in it.

Just want to say thank you. I live in Stuttgart Germany, I'm black American with a German lady partner, and girlfriend LOL. Our place is doing ok after 4 years. it's hard work as you said. We are both up in age and still trying to move ahead. I am also an Entertrainer. Our thing is a lot of time we don't have the power to keep going day by day. Open at noon, we close early at times and we know that is not good. We need help but don't have the money to pay for it, We Need to stay open longer but are too tired and again no help. What can we do? We have music, open-air 5 times a year, 300 to 400 people, Free cover! It's hard fighting the city to do things, to let us have things, OMG. This is a paperwork country. HELP and Thank you

I want to open my own restaraunt when I save up enough money and it honestly sounds amazing! I know it sounds like hard work but I would love every second of it, I love cooking and I have a pretty good idea of what type of restaraunt it will be!

Completely understandable I've been in the business for 20 years just working for someone dreaming of the day that I could open my own but when you do that you pretty much just bought yourself a job you're the boss but you bought a job and now with Corona it's even tougher to try to get the restaurant open going

im 25, my mom bought a resturant in 2003, ive been working in the kitchen since i was 12. eventually i am to take over the business. she has not had many days off id say the last big time off was when she had the flu for 4 days otherwise a day off for her, is driving to go get some food or stuff to drop off at the bar/grill, and then going home and still being a 8-10 hour day of driving around. i get 2 days off a week, granted that used to not be so, id get 1-1.5 if that for 4 months straight i worked 7-15 hour days. this was last year. ive had about 1.5 weeks off recently and that is purely because 1 week ago today i got my gallblatter removed and its been a bit of a hastle to get back to work with breathing issues from it. just did my first shift back after and now im trying to work Vacation wise.. i mean i took a 1 day trip to the mall of america me, my mother and my husband. Thats the only "true vacation" ive had since 2018 which confused my husband who is from Europe specifically Austria, hes used to even in resturant work getting 2-6 weeks paid and unpaid off a year depends, in austria its 4 weeks for his area of paid time off. he still even a year after moving in with me (midwest usa) doesent get americans dont take time off. especially ones that own or whos family owns resturants.

I've been told my cooking is amazing by people who are global travellers. I love cooking, but I'm clueless about the business start up aspect. Any guidance or suggestions for someone like me who is looking to get going on starting up my own spot?

Bro! I’m from Detroit originally! I’ve been living in Florida for the past decade! My immediate family still lives in Detroit! I say that to say this! When I was a kid there was a restaurant it was called Miley & Miley shrimp shack! They had locations off the Davison Freeway close to Highland Park and on the East Side! I’ve gonna back and they’ve since closed! If you can find the previous owner and the recipe you could make a billion dollars! They use to fry the shrimp in this batter and that’s all they did! I believe the previous woman has since past! Free falling ideas!

My wife and i have an annual income combined of 102k before taxes. We can save 30k in 6 months. We don't have any experience obviously since this will be a new field for us but we will gain as much knowledge as possible, hopefully find a genuine mentor! Im 24 and shes 23 so we just want to grow and prosper to be set !!! My first question, how much money do I need to start everything, I know it will vary based on what type of restaurant. Im thinking bar & grill or Mexican restaurant type of setting.
