Hearing another art teacher's perspective on methods on teaching animation gives me a sigh of relief. Though it's been 8 years since I graduated with an Animation Diploma, it still haunts me that my teachers despised anything that's not western animation (more cartoony, disney/pixar esque styles). They specifically despised 'anime' and said it's a trash medium. And as someone who did anime style animations, they really bombarded me with out of the blue lectures of 'You should stop animating anime if you knnow what's good for you'. This escalated to it affecting my grades as my finals, which I did through the worst of my depression phase and they were very aware of this, where I presented an original Concept Art along with Animatics (which even they commented was twice as much work as anyone in my batch did), and they gave me a 'B' "because of the art style". I tried to debate with them about it, asking if it was anything else than that (execution of story, backgrounds, not enough culture placement etc), but they flatly said "because you did it in an anime style" and to be honest, it caught me by surprise because not only did I tried to 'tone down' the style for them, but they said -nothing- throughout the 3 months of consultation we had. It's always bothered me too because this school was in Singapore. I was dumbfounded why something closer to Asian culture like anime was so despised in favour of other styles they find more significant. I had wondered if I had been missing something. because I did try to look at it from their perspectives but the only arguement they had was that it wasn't "as good" as western animation. which is vague and when asked to explain further, they kind of went in crircles. And these are teachers that have been teaching there for 20 years. But hearing your explanation and your point of view makes me breathe a sigh of relief because it's sort of make me feel like "ah, okay so it is just preferences after all... it wasn't that I did bad by choosing to animate in a style i love". Thank you so much for doing this video! I love animations regardless of styles and mediums because i do believe learning from diverse backgrounds and stories is the advantage of internnet these days. It's nice to see that i'm not alone in that thought ;v;

My professor was the same way and basically told me there is no way I can get a job as an animator unless I moved to Asia.

any advice on choosing an animation school? I have a BA in digital film production but am hoping to do a masters in animation. I'm considering just continuing to learn online but it's a little isolating and I'd like to collaborate more.

I taught middle school film and animation for a year and found the students ended up teaching me a lot more than I taught them. Having to research the things they were into and what they wanted to create ultimately made me a better creator myself. I also learned the whole concept of creative voice in a whole new way. Def would love to get back to teaching, but not that age group cuz they can also be really mean :( lol

Midway through the video but 'just wanted to say, yes! Glen Keane did ask his grandchild to do that. He said that in a talk at Calarts that I think may still be on KZbin.

I’m a little curious about how weight is portrayed without at least some form of squash and stretch, albeit subdued. Ultimately I agree though: there’s animation traditions around the world that do different things and have different goals, but are just as stylistically valid. Not sure I would say they all have the same goals per se.

Hi Toniko! I'm looking to take your animation course on concept design academy, but I am more interested in working as a storyboard artist. Do you think it would be in my best interest to take your class or would it be better for me to just take a class specifically on storyboarding?

A teacher that doesn't treat rules as Holy Commandments That Should Be Obeyed? What heresy is this?!

Some animation teachers make it very clear how much they hate anime and how little they think of anyone who likes anime as nothing more than a wanker/degenerate/not a real artist. You can see it here in the comments section, where as soon as Enrique noticed you mentioned anime he defaulted to insulting you as an artist and the people learning from you as randys(british slang for people hungry for sex).

The aggression and hate for Japanese animation at least in part is a product of xenophobia. Remember this: Aaron Blaise likes Princess Mononoke. I'd probably avoid certain channels or be aware of their hidden xenophobia like BaM Animation.
