I can feel your reluctance toward these exercises, i had it, too, but i have to say, tackling some of these things like 2 point perspective and similar, really helped me improve my sketching skills and also trained the eye. before i would try to sketch everything in isometric perspective or without considering perspective at all and it always looked wonky and wobbly. and you can look into it without doing exactly these exercises but on your terms..

The growth is amazing! I was obsessed with Feng Zhu's videos in 2012 after quitting art school. It's 2023 and I'm a mechanical engineer and I've never stopped applying his philosophies like your perspective coursework. It takes A LOT of unpaid time/labor to master your software, but It will all pay off once you start working on your own projects!

As someone who went through 4 years of a BAA Animation degree and doing 3D modelling post for a masters (and now works in film), you gained 70% of the same skill set as a crossover animators would, you draw extremely well as your program had a GREAT base for getting non-artists up to snuff. By end of term 1 you were drawing on a high level for design & technical so don't think you're a bad artist by any means as your final renders are professional grade and could pass in the tv/film industry. Great video, home to watch a few more down the road.

It's hard to determine where to start to develop skills to get to that level. Your video reveals that process. Just stumbled across your video now, probably because Feng Zhu is active again on his FZD channel. It's great to see from a student's perspective how things work there, which is basically the same as FZ has said in his videos. 😅 And yeah, it really shows how the school is influenced by Scott Robertson's teachings, because FZ was his student too. Got both of his amazing books.

I've been drawing for about 2 years now and I can't draw a straight line for the love of my life. And that is why photoshop has a nice feature where you just hold shift and make a line.

I have been self studying art alone since 2017. But I guess having a structured learning method can be beneficial

Mad respect for your art self study, but yes having a structured learning method can be beneficial. I think Brainstorm has some structure laid out for their online courses you can check out!

It's crazy how the ways our educations are similar as someone who got a diploma in 3D! We also used pure ref and I actually got a repetitive strain injury from it. Term one was a lot for me too, tbh I think they push us a to hard, we shouldn't be getting life long injuries from our education lol.
