@@Ozarkprepper643 I didn't think the turbo lag was an issue for aircraft, since their always operating at rpm and load. Tell me if I'm wrong though. For automotive I definitely agree, mechanical superchargers seem like they would be nicer to drive. I've only had the opportune to drive N/A and turbo cars in my time so far. I don't really like turbos on land, the lag completely changes how you have to corner, and it somewhat limits your options. I guess I always thought that turbos were meant to be up high in the sky.

@@saulekaravirs6585 I prefer turbos over N/A for 4 wheels. I tend to squeeze the throttle too early which bites me in shifter karts (and has bitten my femur on my race bike) but in my cars it works out perfectly. I love the power application of my MR2. Never driven anything with a mechanically driven supercharger, so I don't have any comparison, but I'm assuming it would be similar to N/A. Now for 2 wheels, anything but N/A is blasphemy.

I thought you might be interested in knowing that your efforts in increasing the aviation community have been effective, at least in my little world. I started watching your stuff six months ago. In that time I have become totally captivated with the idea of building my own airplane. As a result of your site, I started to look at others and came across several build sites that deal especially in building with wood. Since then, I have ordered a kit that will be delivered in April. I have built a completely flat and true work table, and am in the process of selecting and putting a deposit on an engine. My plan is to start the build this coming year and in the summer begin flight lessons. Ideally, I should have my sport certificate when I have the airplane done. When I look back on it, none of this would have happened had I not stumbled on your Scrappy build.Thank you Mike, you are an inspiration!

Thinking back to my days flying KC-10s and found myself wondering: what about two sets of ailerons? Inboard and outboard. The extra set only unlocks at full flap settings. That’s a common setup on larger aircraft and seems easier than having one massive aileron and expecting it to perform the same across all flight profiles. But I’m no engineer! I’ll greatly enjoy watching the upcoming aileron development. Back to work!

In several very high-performance sailplanes, flaps and ailerons come down together, until a certain point… then the ailerons come back up to neutral or slightly negative as the flaps keep going down. This increases roll control immensely. Maybe your last foot of aileron could do the same? Something to ponder, I think.
@janschultzemelling

I just discovered this channel yesterday. Watching the crazy custom talks about Scrappy has been eye-poppingly cool! YES, that was my thought too, spoilerons! It seems like a good candidate, as all the big jets do it. I sat thinking, well, you've succeeded in creating a wing with such enormous lift capability that you run out of roll control before the thing will stall…so, kill some of that lift on the high-wing. Good idea. I've read a few sources that suggest wings are typically designed to stall at the root first, so roll control is the last thing to be lost as a stall develops. Another consideration for the flight-test program: what's the effect of the rudder on roll in slow flight and high AoA situations. This wing is unique in that slow flight might not necessarily equate to a high AoA situation. But various sources I've encountered tell me that in typical aircraft, and especially the big jets, when you've got high AoA on and you're near the stall, the rudder becomes a primary roll-control device. Then of course, when near stall, trying to pick up the low wing with aileron may push that side into stall, and suddenly the stick seems to do the opposite of what you intended! The guidance is to keep the ailerons neutral and roll with rudder. A complication for the spoileron idea: you might want the spoileron to activate only during special parts of the flight envelope, not be something that comes up every time the stick moves to the side. So, plenty of variables to sort thru in design and fluid simulations.

I know the issue with the Ailerons. I had the same issue with my Own-design homebuilt. Its nowhere near as hard core as Scrappy, but it has a wing with really nice low-speed characteristics. It was getting airborne well before full aileron effectiveness, so was tricky in crosswinds! In my case, a row of vortex generators on the leading edge in front of the ailerons sorted the issue pretty easily. making improvements down the track is absolutely normal for own-designs!

for the propeller control.. are you going to put a spur gear around the hub with a bolt on second gear housing to complete the pump.. allowing you to easily inspect the drive gear sides and the complete driven gear by just unbolting the cover.. the oil around the hub where the main drive gear is also cools the hub and housing. oversizing the case opening for the driven gear housing could allow you to machine a larger driven gear or a smaller driven gear and housing if the oil flow is not correct .. without redesigning the main housing. shims to change gear clearance between the drive and driven gear.. bearings.. double row ball bearing up front.. self aligning roller bearing on the rear (barrel shaped roller) as that will probably handle the side loads better as are exerted by the prop and which ever drive you have..

Future Mike: Well I didn't like how she was flying below 12 miles per hour, so I added vortex generators on pneumatic pogo sticks out the end of the wing to channel airflow into the slip stream, and help the ailerons gain authority. But I wasn't happy with it, so since I had this huge solar array, I got several ducted fans for RC Jets and mounted them in place of the vortex generators, so now when I lose roll authority I hit the button a few times and blast them with air and we are back in control!

Patey ! Great to get an update on You and Scrappy. I guess You had to get the slide rule back out to design/create Your Engineering Changes. I am interested to see your engine updates. Lots of variables changing on the wing and power plant, not to mention the prop. Sounds like another patent or 3 coming up.

A couple too many great ideas tried all at once. My greatest wish is you allow (or design) a Partey Twin Wing for RV aircraft. Longer, thinner, and able to land 15 knots slower while increasing miles per gallon at cruise and top speed to a degree that seems incredible

👍Was just thinking about you today. Thought you're likely taking a break from work since it's the holidays coming up. Yet that only means you're busy working. Understand completely about giving steadfast numbers. Everything is relative. I've never been a fan of but intermittent power of nitrous plus when the bottle's gone so is the power. Can't wait to see the constant speed unit for that propeller. That will be one more nice addition to Aviation. Thanks again Mike stay safe and enjoy after all life is what we make of it. 🤠🐂🏞️🛩️

I expect extending the ailerons would increase low-speed roll-control authority, but it seems a shame to change what works well at higher speed. I have a couple of alternate ideas. One is a flap-like extension of the ailerons that automatically deploys at airspeeds below 40 knots. That's still a weight penalty. Another is a flaperon modification of the flaps and slats that differentially changes the slat and flap extension in concert with the ailerons at low speed. (While relatively simple conceptually and mechanically, this requires replacing the flap motor with two servo motors and a control law computer system. I don't like the possibility of increased stall speed for the "down" wing.) My favorite idea is to use a pair of electrically driven tilting propellors tied to the ailerons. They could either be mounted on the wingtips similar to the V-22 tilt-rotor configuration, or attached directly to the ailerons in a pusher configuration to apply thrust with a vertical component equal to the aileron angle. At speeds above 40 knots, the blades would be feathered and angled parallel to the wings. To get more use out of this setup, speed control for the motors would have an input from the rudder pedals to augment low-speed yaw control. (I suppose a pusher configuration would be preferable for wing-tip motors as well since that would be less likely to perturb airflow over the wings and possibly cause unwanted separation.) I enjoyed this video and its predecessors; they're intellectually stimulating as well as entertaining. Thanks!

Really cool to see your enjoying Scrappy, Go Nitrous. For your Aileron Issue, have you looked at having spoilers deploy on opposite side only when < 40 knots or even when over 80% of aileron travel. Would keep all your current Airfoil the same so no change in stability. Back to work.

With the massive battery capacity Scrappy has a variable speed electric motor direct drive positive displacement supercharger would be a lot less plumbing with no waste gate and the complexity that comes with a dual turbo charger setup. Probably quite a bit lighter also when you look at the plumbing dual intercoolers and fuel management complexity. With the aero drag Scrappy has you probably want the power mainly for takeoff and climb, so time wise maybe 5 minutes max. With a VS superchager, just set the manifold pressure you want, set the fuel flow and you are good to go. Also lots of big PD superchargers out there to choose from that will supply all the air you want in that big motor. Separate independent oil system, a single intercooler and very little plumbing. Might be worth considering.

"I can't believe how slow it flies" exactly my first thought that first time I saw you land Scrappy. That shot of Scrappy "on station" against the wind blew my mind with the possabilities of "search and rescue". Yes "air flow design" is pure genious, the human mind + the power of computing! Thank you Mike. Kind regards, Malcolm, Australia.

Thanks for the extras with my Draco ornaments. One is for my mom's tree in remembrance of my stepdad. He passed the day before the Draco crash. He was a pilot and early on flew Helio Couriers and other planes into South/Central America while working undercover for the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Another story of his he like to tell was landing on the Pentagon helipad for a demonstration flight. My first ever flight was with him and his friend in N7859N. In his last few years relegated to home, he spent a lot of time watching aviation channels on KZbin. Upon finding your channel we were hooked to it and always looking forward to the next video. Watching the videos together made some good final memories. It's absolutely awesome what you're capable of doing and we appreciated every bit of it. Sidenote,"Turbulence" is hangared localish, haven't seen it though, it doesn't get out much.

Mike. Re the ailerons. Prob too late. But what about electric ducted fans in the wing tips to provide the slow speed roll control. You have all that battery power, they would be light and no need to worry about all the other down stream changes modifying the current ailerons would induce. Roll control without air flow over the wing would be a huge advantage
