well, it did go through a rough phase of stupid cosmetics, but those days have gone. And, they are totally optional, if you wanna buy them you can, you don't have too, it has no effect on the game or gameplay.

Yes but it's not as bad as Siege for example. Siege went a full 180 from their traditional roots.
