Awesome video. I don't even care much about Kingdom Hearts, but your excitement for it is infectious, and the sheer number of examples you were able to pull to support your points leads to this super-fan, encyclopedic-knowledge level experience that was really entertaining. The "AMV"-style sections were particularly strong and made me feel unexpected emotions for characters and idea I have little to no attachment to. Badass work, Mr. Waffles. It was a splendid time.

It is a genuine crime that this channel has not been discovered more, the writing and editing is some top notch in a way that describes the bonds of disney KH that I've never seen before. I teared up at the montage at the ending and almost didn't leave a like because I went to go like twice. Genuinely great stuff dude, just got here after the archie sonic video and it's amazing to see such great content.

Hey Ian, I saw the comment you left on my video about how I was one of your inspirations to make discussion videos on Kingdom Hearts and after watching all of your KH videos, I can easily say that this is some of the most thought-provoking and enjoyable KH-related content I've seen in a long time. Looking through these comments, many people already said a lot of what I was thinking but as a huge fan of FF and Disney, KHII was always my favourite in the series. And while I could point to specific moments or features of the game, I feel like you put it all into words so fittingly. Looking at it now, the entire KH series seems like a gradient from kiddy and "Disney" KHI to dark, edgy, and LOOOOOOOOREEEE-focused KHIII, with it looking like IV will just go even further away from the Disney stuff to focus on original content, characters, and worlds (something many KH fans are happy about, but that I as a FF and Disney fan am extremely saddened by). Vanilla III didn't even have FF and it seems that IV will focus less on Disney. But II was such a perfect middle ground and I feel like the series (not to make this too much about future titles) lost that kind of charm following this game. It'll always hold a special place in my heart and I'm glad that other people also feel a similar way. You definitely earned yourself a subscriber! :)

wow that was extremely wholesome, very happy you chose to channel it that way. Honestly it cuts the same way I feel about One Piece, all I ever saw/heard about KH (and OP) was all the Organization XIII stuff, and I can absolutely see the fun happy adventure part being glossed over or even discarded by the fans who were mostly teenagers and young adults. Maybe some fans that're even younger got it but most of them don't have an online presence so you don't typically see that perspective. Not to say the reading is childish, on the contrary I think it's extremely mature and is right on the money of what KH2 is going for, it makes complete sense why they spend the majority of the game the way they do. Honestly it doesn't sound like all the spin-offs and complications of the story help it's case that much, especially the length between 2 and 3 so most fans completely forget what it was about in the first place. For the video itself it's well edited, some pretty on the nose clip choices but I can't knock that if I've done it myself haha I actually liked that you dropped the "script on screen" bits and the one reaction image that was towards the start of the vid, felt kinda typical YT and made the vid feel a bit wannabe to me (but I'm just kinda jaded to that lol) Your delivery and general message I think carried the retention for me, tho the points did feel repetitive in a way that felt like the video wasn't progressing and just relishing in the moment, which isn't a bad thing especially if it's such a positive message but 55min is still a lot. It's good at least that it was more or less structured along with the game, talking about the beginning at the beginning and the end at the end etc, without making it feel like recap. I'm not exactly sure how and I'm not saying to add this now but I do think it could've done with better partitioning, y'know a way of dividing the vid into chunks the viewer can follow. This doesn't even have to be chapters or titling each point, with my Ninku vid for example I had it so the music and visuals changed noticeably when I was moving to a certain point (or paragraph haha). I feel like that helps a viewer feel like there's progression and it doesn't just keep going and going, reminds me of Every Frame a Painting's vid on F for Fake where video essays shouldn't feel like a list. I fall into that trap anyway bc like yourself here I love indulging in as many aspects of that thing as I can, just for the sake of it. There probably was that partitioning somewhere here but it was probably difficult for me to tell or otherwise show it bc it's all game footage. Anyway big thumbs up I really liked that, great job 👍

This is coming from someone with no experience with Kindom Hearts. I think I've always stayed away due to that stigma the lore has. That it's this bonkers story spreed across console games, GBA, DS even mobile phone. But the way you've recontextualized it as the story in between the lore. Thats its about the journey rather than the destination. No matter how generic that sounds, I think that kind of storytelling definitely has its place. It makes me wanna give the series a shot. More than anything though, I WANNA USE CHICKEN LITTLE AS A SUMMON!!!! I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT!!!! Great video by the way.

3:30 I’ve always adored Working Together as a piece, specifically because of how emblematic it feels to Sora, Donald, and Goofy’s relationship and how it fully cements the hard tonal shift away from the Roxas prologue. I’ve long wanted to make my own video about how underrated that relationship (and the Disney characters in general) are in grounding the KH experience, and this video is a big kick in the pants to get back to that project.

Sora definitely got more sassy in KH2 due to Roxas' influence- it's actually canon that the reason he has lighter, almost blonder hair in KH2 is a direct influence of Roxas (from a KH ultima artbook!)
@KirbySonicTeam

I think it can go either way since Sora is still his lighthearted self. The sass is just kinda on top of it. Plus in later games they just revert him back to his original personality and strip away a lot of the sass. But hey that’s the fun of kh. Lots of ways to read it

One thing that stood out in particular was your thoughts on limits. I always got addicted to them for the animations, ignore the fact they usually one shot mobs for me. But aside from being really cool action-packed sequences, I never realized how much personality and character they show between Sora and the party member. It made me appreciate them even more than I already do. I think it shares the same reason I love the summon entrances. The way you described each limit sequence with such passion made me feel the same joy you did. I especially liked the observation of Jack Sparrow’s being like a comedy act. I’ll need to compare them to the KH3 link attacks and summon animations again, but solely from memory, I feel like despite them comprising of fun callbacks to their respective movies, i don’t remember feeling as much as a personal connection between the characters. Maybe they’re missing those little touches like a fist bump or a snarky pose or a determined look shared between the party members and Sora. Not to mention their reaction command only appeared randomly instead of being a readily available option from the command menu, so it makes it feel less rewarding gameplay wise. Or, maybe if there was more personality it would become a fun edition for the character alone, as if on random occasions the party feels cute and just decides to oneshot every enemy with a silly animation. (Which by the way most of the link attacks are surprisingly less flashy than the limits in KH2, despite every other attack option becoming a constant spectacle.) Anyways I hope this comment was okay feedback, even though I couldn’t help but share my thoughts on it as well. Best of luck!
@KirbySonicTeam
@KirbySonicTeam Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the response! And yeah I agree, KH3s limits, with the exception of Jack Sparrow, are all just about going “would it be cool if you could do this with Buzz Lightyear or Rapunzel or Baymax?” It’s just flashy fun. Which is fine, but again, less personal. They feel like they’re more for the people who play kh just to interact with Disney characters. Jack Sparrows limit at least has Sora and Jack back to back and begins with Jack jumping down and smiling at Sora. It doesn’t necessarily depict a unique bond, but since we know Jack already likes Sora it hits pretty well as a cute bro moment.

I've always felt this way. KH1is like a miniseries that adds up to one long, epic Disney movie, hence plot relevance in just about every world. KH2, meanwhile, is like a season of a TV show, with sometimes plot but other times "filler episodes" - and I do not mind in the slightest as long as both are FUN, which KH2 achieves in spades. Both approaches work.

Man watching this makes me really hopeful for KH4, the absolute potential of properties of properties to merge together. My favorite idea/concept being, Wall*E! It ties in with KH’s themes so well, autonomous beings that have heart, and you can explain why Auto, the axioms decommissioned captain of the ship, is so heartless, because he wasn’t ever able to think for himself, his orders hard coded into his machine to keep humanity alive. Organization 13 could so easily take advantage of Auto’s mishandled mission, possibly reawakening the ship, and giving Auto heartless he can control to take back the humans that belong back on the ship. The scenery could be so cool too! Imagine the wastes of Wall*E’s earth now filled with greenery, even some growing over the towers of trash, ships, and even the decommissioned Wall*Es, now being a positive sign that life has gone on. Imagine the towns that would have developed axiom residents now remaking and fixing their world. My favorite thought relating to this the Axiom itself, lingering in the distance as that’s where our heroes must go! Speaking of, the group has to get a unique design. Sora having a spruced up jumpsuit of the axiom, Goofy and Donald both being Robots with quirky names that tie into their appearance. Goofy being Goof*E and Donald being D0N-LED. Wall*E and Eve of course have to contribute to combat in some way, though one of them will be unavailable for most of the world... Imagine the potential conflict, like a twist of the movie, Eve temporarily goes out of commission because a boss or heartless short circuit the powerful Eve that could’ve been a powerful asset to stopping this invasion. While Sora, D0N-LED, Goof*E, and briefly Wall*E all scorn the lost of their friend, and even lover, Wall*E realizes how they can fix her. Remembering when she shut off all that time ago, Wall*E realizes they need to go there to boot her back up. Imagine if the other Eves were an enemy type, lost in the abandoned ship. Wall*E being determined to save Eve despite lacking the actual combat skills, it shows a perfect dichotomy between Auto and himself. Have it come full force when our heroes finally find the wicked wheel and the organization member that’s been pulling the strings. Goof*E (or anyone else but c’mon, let goofy preach) speaks out for Wall*E, and shows that the robots, at least in this world, have gained a soul and just because one faulty robot shows that all of them are heartless, is foolish thinking and a one sided view. I mean look at Wall*E, he’s come all this way to save his partner, not even knowing it’s possible, now that’s soul, heart. If you somehow read all this, congratulations! Thank you for being as invested as I am for what is essentially a fanfic for something that might not even happen lmao. If you have any ideas for this feel free to share, and somehow Ian if you so happen to read this comment on this 3 month old video... nice job! Subbed.

All right! Looking forward to them and any content you dish out in the future. Well, if I had to pick anything, the aptly named Little Moments Through Gameplay is what hit the hardest. How you cleverly and seamlessly demonstrated the correlation between each of the Limits and how they play into Sora's developing relationship with the Disney crew is something that I personally believe you knocked out of the park. Beyond the high-octane eye candy on display, I had always subconsciously understood but never actively investigated why they've so effortlessly captivated me for so many years. I'm in the oddball camp who heavily enjoys Kingdom Hearts' rather unusual narrative approach and how its gameplay can often complement its progression, so seeing this video, in many ways, felt equal parts refreshing and vindicating. More than anything else, I love seeing someone else's well informed passion for the series--or even this game, really--shine through, and I think you managed to strike an excellent balance between being analytical and allowing your raw emotions to take center stage.

@@KirbySonicTeam I loved a TON of things about the video, but the one that captures my heart the most is the idea that kh is like a tv series where it accumulates instead of build. Now, that's not a very ideal way of putting it, so let's say it differently: I like that instead of adding to the end, the story adds to the whole. Keeping it always fun and lovable and never sacrificing its this quality for a goal. People said in the comments it's like a tv series but I think it's more like a manga series. Knowing how Nomura was influenced by mangaka, and aspired to be one before joining the industry, is another point. It feels like each entry is an arc and each have their chapters inside them. Now, the way all the games use those chapters isn't totally consistent. What I really wonder is, how does Kh3 engage with its chapters, or as you've said, disney content.
@KirbySonicTeam
@KirbySonicTeam 3 ай бұрын
For me kh3 kneecaps itself in most ways with the Disney stuff. Since they don’t have revisits you don’t grow a connection to any of the world characters past your one and done time with them, making them feel like pit stops. The best worlds to me are the ones where you are seeing old friends like Hercules or Jack. Unfortunately Jack sparrow is crab jack for 80% of the world, and you hang out with Pooh bear for like 20 minutes. 2. Kh3 has a far more of an urgent story, meaning it feels kinda strange that we’re just hanging out with Disney characters. 3. The organization somehow does less in this game in the Disney worlds because all they’re really doing is either A. Being dicks and that’s it (Xigbar and Young X) B. Doing mobile game setup which doesn’t effect anything (Luxord) C. Threatening to do something to princesses which doesn’t matter (marluxia and larxene) or D. A neat reason to bring them back (Dark Riku and Vanitas). All of this makes them feel like a meme. And 4. In general I just don’t think Sora has any real fun connections with any of the characters outside of “ah, that’s cute” with Rapunzel. The pacing of cutscenes is at its worst in the series sucking a lot of charm out, and there is no overall connection to these characters to the main story outside of showing sora making friends, which has been done far better in Kh1. Sorry to be so negative tho! Thank you for your kind comment and if you have a different way of looking at the worlds please let me know!

This is slightly off topic since it's more about KH1, but your discussion of little Disney moments reminded me of something. A favorite moment of mine in the series is Sora getting the power of flight in Neverland. It comes across as a fairly minor thing at first before turning into a field move for mobility. But the real pay-off is the final battle against Ansem. Ansem suddenly opens a large chasm under Sora and drops him to his doom. In that moment, Riku calls out to Sora to teasingly encourage him. This is the first time that Sora has been given a sign that Riku is okay since his "death" in Hollow Bastion, and it's the happy thought that gives him the ability to fly out of the chasm in order to fight Ansem. When Square wants the Disney moments to work, they can really make them work.

That said, you're giving me some new things to think about regarding the presentation of KH2's story! I remember being a little offput by it being so blase about the Heartless and the antagonists the first time I played it, but the way you convey it as "Sora has very little reason to worry about the people close to him and he's mostly just following up with old friends and solving a few loose ends from KH1" does help recontextualize some things for me!

@@KirbySonicTeam You know, I don't think I ever really appreciated the way gameplay and a second visit to each world does help convey the friendship between Sora and Co. a lot more engagingly than dialogue until you brought it up. That might be why something like Sora interacting with the TWEWY cast or Quasimodo in DDD felt a bit flatter to me, because I didn't really have time to make that connection as a party member, or through team attacks that help convey the idea of people going through events together. And the worlds after KH2 are one and done, so it feels a little weird for Sora to insist he has a lifetime friendship with someone like, say, Elsa when they've only had a few mild conversations in the interim.

@@KirbySonicTeam :) :) :D your welcome and I enjoyed that sora has a strong heart to find his missing lost friends in Kingdom hearts 2 and sora and Kari met there nobody friends of Roxas and nanmie because Roxas and nanmie is within sora and Kari body and Roxas and nanmie was born in the first kingdom hearts game when sora used the keyblade to release all the hearts he collected from his journey's and then at the end of kingdom hearts 2 Sora and his friends lived on the island 🏝️ and they stayed there and watched the Waves. That is what I enjoyed :) :) :D

@@KirbySonicTeam what makes this vid unique is your take on that change in perspective from fighting a force of evil vs a more fun, laid back adventure(especially the Pete fight in the beginning) is something that was right in my face but I haven’t heard it in any kh2 love letter I’ve watched before.

I'm not sure if I'm right, but I think I might have realized a reason as to why a lot of the moments in the Disney worlds feel disconnected to most people, myself included to a degree. It's not just because of the chill vibe the main group have to the whole adventure, at least a major portion of the first half of it, and although you make good points and examples, I think it comes down to that a lot of the moments of reunion and character interactions that you look at and come across are just kind of...there. They're good, but sometimes they feel like they're missing some kind of impact to drive that feeling of a reunion in seeing an old friend. And I think it comes down to a lack of music in a lot of those moments. A lot of the time it's either ambient noise or the repeated generic music used for the world or battles. That and coupled with a good amount of the animated scenes using "generic mouth flap" animations for interactions don't give a feeling of the weight they're meant to have, even if the tone is meant to be light. It just feels like it...happens...even though it's asking for a certain amount of fanfare. The moments don't really feel...special, even when they're suppose to be. I mean, the trio are visiting and meeting old friends they haven't talked to in a long while, you'd think that would be celebrated more. Ah, at least you bring those points up.

@@KirbySonicTeam That's fair. Granted, it's ok to be critical, plus you can be both. But I understand, I also try to stay positive with stuff in my life as much as I can. But if something rubs me the wrong way, I try to make my stance clear but also to try and not come off as mean while I do. And no problem, these vids have been good. ^u^d

It's nice to hear someone go in detail as to why the disney stuff made and impact. Personally the disney stuff had the opposite effect on me. Every time I had to go to one of the cartoon worlds or interact with a disney character I was instantly pulled out of my immersion. Maybe it's because I'm not a disney fan in real life? Can't say I've ever really liked any disney movie especially if it had any annoying singing and dancing musical scenes. My favorite parts of the games were the interactions with the original worlds because it felt more serious, while the final fantasy interactions felt cozy and I see it as a very interesting SquareEnix crossover. I grew up with this series and played every game on release, but I could never shake the feeling I would like if more if the theme and cast was just SquareEnix IP's.

That’s fair! And I’m glad that despite not enjoying this aspect of the series that you enjoyed the perspective. I actually have one other kh2 video on this Disney integration topic called “How Kingdom Hearts 2 Uses Disney and Final Fantasy” which goes into the more basic appeal of seeing these cartoony characters interact with Sora and the FF characters in a different way than this video does. Really diving into how it enhanced my immersion. I really think you’d like it and if you do watch please leave a comment! I’d love to hear your thoughts.

KHII is my favorite in the franchise, mostly because it's the perfect balance of Disney and Final Fantasy. I never cared for the actual story. I was in it for the cross over stuff. It's the reason I never played the spin offs, and why III, despite being mechanically superior, is just not as worthwhile to me.
