Hiya Andrew. I will have to feature some of the culinary delights I soak along the way. I’ll be honest tho - a hungry hiker is a poor judge of food. I’ve seen a grown man slurp rain soaked instant oatmeal out of his dirty bear bag one rainy morning after discovering it leaked in the top and was holding water on the bottom. Calories are calories tho. Thanks for the comment.

Huck; thx for your IAT zoom presentation tonight. Coming to you from a few miles south of your home. Be safe on the PCT. My son thru-hiked in 2017. I joined him for the Sierras in late June/early July. 2017 was a heavy snow year, but nothing compared to this year. The snow was tough to hike thru and river crossings were crazy (2 people drowned that summer). I doubt anyone will get thru this year untill late July at the earliest. Be prepared to flip flop!

@acma200 Жыл бұрын
@@huckwashere Certainly! I avoided snow basically altogether during my thru-hike of the AT last year, but I still managed to run into a few somewhat sketchy water crossings up in Maine. Definitely a bigger deal than lightning, wildlife, or any other trail condition.

For the first 700 miles I would recommend leaving the ice ax and replacing your Katoola spikes with Hill Sound Trail crampons. Will save you weight and it is a happy medium between the two.
@sugarstick6990 Жыл бұрын
What about the Desert Divide and Fuller Ridge etc.?
@JaredandTasha Жыл бұрын
@@sugarstick6990 i only mentioned this because it sounds like he has experience with snow. Ice Axe is good backup, but Fuller & Apache are fairly established footsteps - Hillsound Trail Crampons will give you plenty of grip with trekking poles. The Katoohla spikes break easily (& often), and don’t offer much grip for how much they weigh.
@huckwashere Жыл бұрын
Thank you both for the suggestions. I got a fair amount of experience in the snow but not much in the alpine passes. I’ve also heard of the Katoolas breaking hehe. That old-school Garcia bear canister weighs a ton and doesn’t hold a lot. You can rent a Bearikade Weekender which will hold more and save you almost a pound. You could also save weight buy buying a BearVault 500, the cost of which would probably be less than renting the Bearikade, but it would only save a couple of ounces. Beat bet is probably the BearVault. So much snow in the Sierra this year that the extra 85 cu-in capacity will be a welcomed addition. Your Garcia also has a weird shape that doesn’t help in making the most of its volume, IMO.
@huckwashere Жыл бұрын
I truly appreciate the advice Andrew. Although I dislike my Garcia, I already own and know it. The other options might prove to be better choices. Way I see it tho I’ve got about 700 miles to decide. The shape of the Garcia is to avoid giving a bear (and hiker) a good grasp on it I think haha. Thanks for the input!

hey Huck, YT algo fed me your channel, you seems like a cool dude man. Thanksfor sharing your pack contents. I got some questions! 1. I'm super curious how anyone can ever sleep on those thin pads, what's your secret? or is it just practice? What temp would you use that pad down to before using the thermarest? 2. Any advice getting over lyme disease? 3. how often do you flush out your sawyer? 4. whats the best way to attach a water bottle to your belt?
@huckwashere Жыл бұрын
Hi Dave. Awesome questions. 1. Don’t know how but I just sleep best feeling the earth beneath me. As for the temps it’s the cold ground not the air temp that matters most with the thin pad. Frozen ground is just too sapping to sleep well. 2. Take each day as it is and smiling never hurts either 3. Every time with a squirt from a sport cap. 4. I have a holster type belt attachment holds a smart water sized bottle clipped on my hip strap right side. Thanks for asking

How many honey buns can you fit in the bear can?

No matter how many I get in there it’s just never enough !

I'm pretty certain you can carry-on the battery pack.

Thanks for the comment Ray. Yes you can bring them in a carry on. I was mistaken.

Things missing? Sunscreen, Body Glide, Imodium, TP, and a pack liner?
@huckwashere Жыл бұрын
Very true Andrew. I didn’t fully cover the “consumables”. Sunscreen in the beginning, ziplocks, tp (or backwoods bidet sometimes), and such. Never used body glide or Imodium myself but a good choice for some folks. I’ve used a bunch of bag liners (nylofume and reg garbage bags) over the years - definitely worth having one at all times! Excellent comment man! Happy hiking 🤙

I'm curious why you didn't use any trekking poles ?

Never been flagged by TSA for carrying on a 20100 mAh battery. It’s not like it’s lead-acid. If you can take a laptop with a battery on board, why not your battery pack?
@huckwashere Жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew. I was mistaken about the battery packs. Seems they’re allowed in carry-on bags, not checked bags tho.

How about Bear Spray?
@huckwashere Жыл бұрын
Great question Leo! I don’t feel it’s needed along this trail, and I’m comfortable without it - but that’s just my own opinion.

Ditch the micro spikes and go straight for crampons.

You even gonna be able to make it through the sierras ? 60-70 ft of snow in Mammoth

Really not sure what it’ll be like when I get up there this year but I’m sure gonna try.

I think your going to need bigger shoe spikes this year.
@huckwashere Жыл бұрын
Thanks geokite! The ones I got work great on ice and hard pack but I just might need to get some more aggressive spikes - or snow shoes haha if it keeps on snowing!

lol - I see what you did there. In case he doesn't see this and reply, he wears the Altra Lone Peaks 6. If you want to see how that came to be his footwear of choice, check out this video from his IAT hike last year. His feet looked so messed up from the Altra Superiors, it hurt me to look at them!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5DNfoGjrLp9gZo&feature=shares
