OMG thats why i got so skinny because i did marry cantonese. and i thought something was wrong with the food and i did get some kind of crazy illness. when i got back to the US the doctors told me i had worms. i lost over 35 pounds. i was given worm pills for horse. i shit you not. and i could feel the worms moving in my belly. i am also no longer married to that girl. it was just nuts. i had a feeling they was doing something to me. and my wife did serve me chicken with worm in it. i just thought OMG, she cant be that dirty or blind to not see this. for 3 weeks i had to stop eating. only liquids. her and her family tried to control dinner and she actually locked me inside the apartment with no key for me to open the door to go out, and i did know basic cantonese, mandarin to get by. and i was safe. so why they locked me in. i actually had plans to escape to the bus station and then to the Guangzhou airport and change my return ticket date. it was really that bad.

It's NOT true that foreigners marrying Chinese citizens can only get a family visiting visa, and that they cannot work after marriage. I don't know what's wrong with Winston's situation, but foreigners can become Chinese permanent resident after 5 years of marriage. Check out this video about an Arab merchant with a Chinese wife who later became a Chinese permanent resident and work in China: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHzOnoOqjctppZY (The discussion start at 26:15).

It has nothing to do with money. Those who apply for admission to Chinese nationality shall be granted Chinese nationality if they have been approved. If they are permitted to join Chinese nationality, they may not retain their foreign nationality. " That is to say, when we join Chinese nationality, we lose the identity of foreigners at the same time. But the welfare of Chinese citizens, education, medical treatment, pension and so on are still very bad, which makes many foreigners unwilling to give up their original nationality and join Chinese nationality. If you have Chinese friends, they will persuade you 100% not to give up their original nationality.

I'm very lucky that my wife's family were accepting of me almost immediately. They are very open minded and only wanted the best for her despite me not having a lot of disposable income (living in Australia is expensive.) Even though we don't currently live in China we still try to help out when we can by giving red envelopes when we can but I think they appreciate us visiting them more than anything. I think it's important to remember that although a lot of Chinese do care about money and social status, there are still people that value family before everything else.
@georgedang449
@georgedang449 7 жыл бұрын
Basically no Chinese care less about family than of money. The very first thing Chinese family looks up when you're dating their daughter is the divorce rate of your home country, the first thing they ask is if there are divorces in your family. In most cases, you can consider yourself discriminated against before your income ever comes into the picture, thanks to the factors mentioned above that you have no control over...

Thailand is even worse. Even if married to a local you cannot own land, a business, etc. I think Western nations should enact a retroactive treatment treaty. If we cannot buy land or gain citizenship in their nations they should not be able to in ours. That's fair. Then watch how fast Asian nations rush to offer a fair and reasonable system to support their wealthy and elite who have bought land and rights throughout western countries.

Look at the Western Nations History. Your policies have been the most racist of all the nations that you have mentioned. White Australia policy was based off of the British immigration policy. American policy was basically to bring in foreigners to use as modern day slaves. (Who built the railways?, the Chinese whom you lured over with the Great American Dream). The only reason it was revoked, was because your 'brilliant' economists proposed that the lowly jobs that no 'white' person wanted to do could be done by the immigrants. The great American Dream, Australian Dream, British Dream were all propaganda to lure workers to your country who end up as toilet cleaners and waiters, prostitutes etc. After your smart policy wasn't to what you expected, you had to get these mass immigrants to assimilate somehow. Now China on the other hand or any east Asian nation has never lured anyone to their countries. In fact, their history has been one of 'closed doors' for centuries. The West changed this, so they need to deal with the consequences, not China. Its like saying why China, Japan, Korea isn't accepting any refugees. It was not their countries that greedily rushed in to topple stable countries, why should they be the ones the clean up the mess?. Ridiculous!!!

The western countries with naturalization processes often do not belong to the white people or European descendants. American continents were robbed from Native Americans. Australia and New Zealand were robbed from the Aborigines. Instead of paying these robbers, Chinese who buy up houses and lands in those countries should pay the Native Americans and Australian Aborigines. On the other hand, European countries often do not provide naturalization processes for foreigners to become their citizens.

Your videos are very helpful for me, and ironically my Chinese wife. She's lived in the USA since 2007, but her parents were here for the past 4 months and she realized how much stress comes from traditions and expectations from her culture. She's very outspoken, and engaging with other cultures. When she first got here she didn't stick to the Chinese clique, as I have seen many folks do. She made friends with folks here, went out and learned about the culture and really dug into learning about the world. Her largest group of friends are actually immigrants from India, who are just a ton of fun to hang out with, and very generous folk. Like you mentioned toward the end, I think studying and learning in the west has changed her mindset. However, in a certain respect, traditions here in the USA aren't really that respected anymore. Its a bit sad in certain ways, as some tradition gives you a sense of heritage, and can be fun. On the other hand, they can be quite burdensome and outdated. There was a time when a dowry might have been needed or your parents living with you after you get married was required. Now, at least in the USA parents provide for themselves by planning for retirement so that stress and expectation is lifted from the next generation. There are always extenuating circumstances of course. My wifes mother for instance, has zero plans for retirement and having had the conversation with her about what her plans are, she thinks she'll be able to work when she needs money. That's not really the life you want to live ya know? And not to mention, elderly getting a job that pays enough to live on might be scarce. Most folks don't want to hire elderly which is unfortunate. Age discrimination here in the states is huge, my family has been the recipient of it, and its just disheartening to see highly educated and experienced people who can make a difference turned away just because they're not 30/40 years old. So - my question to you is - how is your wifes family dealing with retirement? Do they have plans to move in with you? If not, like my wife and I, are you squirreling away money knowing they'll need help as they grow older?

You can work in China if you are married. You just can't work on a family reunion visa. You need to apply for a work in the same way that an unmarried person does. To get a work visa, you need to have a job offer for a position that you are qualified to be in. Getting hitched doesn't qualify you to hold any position. The family reunion visa doesn't have the same vetting process that work visas do. It only requires you to be related to a Chinese person.

But the family pushed for somethings they call sin sod which for all purposes is a diary they claim it’s not what it is. They wanted several hundred thousand Thailand Bhat I refused because I already given the bride 3 million for the house. I told them to take the land and property paper and put it on the altar. They balked I resisted. Eventually I won out because I refused and my wife wanted to marry. I still pay money monthly to the mother and father only about $60 and every year when we visit their home if it needs remodeling or repairing I have it done and pay for it I have put in a new floor, new roof, And repainted the house inside and out. But it’s pretty cheap I think it is cost me less than $1500 over the course of three years total. The family is happy with me and I am happy I love my wife and we love our life here in Chiang Mai

Hi Winston. My wife and I traveled to China august 2016 and I found the older people to be more racist. The younger generation seems less racist. Even with the wide language gap I could understand certain words like a taxi driver calling me a stupid foreigner, in chineese, very angry. However, the Chinese people living in my country, in certain areas like where I live are not racist at all and love hearing about my trip to China. We did make a friend in china who we still email often. Also some people were very surprised that we were so white they wanted to take pictures with us and them. My wife's from Sichuan province her parents were very poor but her grandparents were able to move to a city I still can't pronounce, Panizilila or something like that. She stayed with her grandparents and was very cultured. After she graduated college she became a police officer and resigned to marry me. I still feel like she gave up a lot but she seems very happy. Her parents did want a dowry however she was very angry since she never lived with them and I was basically ordered not to pay by her grandparents. That being said we do constantly get asked about babies from her grandmother. I live in the bible belt however I am not very religious myself. Her family was very surprised to discover an American man who had traditional values similar to their own. I still open the door for my wife and drive as much as possible but I did make sure she learned to drive and had a car here in the USA as soon as she got here. Her being able to feel safe and independent was my first priority. I do wonder if her grandfather is one of the "uncles" you talk about though in your videos.

You are actually wrong here regarding Hong Kong. As a foreigner without Chinese descent, after living in Hong Kong for like 7 years. You can not get a SAR Passport., Instead, you become a Hong Kong PR(permanent resident). Because Hong Kong passport is just a subcategory of Chinese Passport. Taiwan is a Little different here, some one like you, is possible to join ROC citizenship.

So sorry to hear that. I am Shanghainese girl. I met my husband almost ten years ago. That time both of us didn't have anything. He didn't need to by me a house to marry me. And he proposed me without a ring but with his words, that was like 8 years ago. Now we are still together ❤ I wish and I believe we could go all the way to the end. Not all Chinese girls are like that. Actually I know many more cases/couples around me are just mine/us. But I don't deny the reality is that the majority of Chinese girls requires this and that and these and those to get married. I hope she let's you to see your son. Cheer up!

Jeessuuss… the same thing happened to me. I married a Shanghainese woman, had two daughters (both look white), and she raked me over the coals for every penny she could beat out of me. However, when she started asking for a divorce, I refused to sign or agree to anything, and when she tried to take the case to the local courts, they basically told her she has to get me to agree to something, which I absolutely refused to do unless she gave me custody of my two daughters, and allowed me to take them back to California with me, and sell our home in Shanghai and split the money - neither of which she could agree to, so we are technically still married and she can't hustle another person until she figures out how to get me off her back. We've been legally married for 22 years - 1997 to 2019. It's all about the money for sure. Another vid that should be made, is about custody of your children while they are residing in China with their mother, regardless of the fact that they are American born citizens. According to the Chinese law, the Chinese citizen automatically has custody while they are in China, and cannot be removed by me unless she gives absolute permission - the US Department of State calls this "International Parental Abduction," and is a very complicated situation.

I think "dowry" may be the wrong term for what you intended to say. A "dowry" is money or property (very often a plot of land, though typically much smaller than the land inheritance the bride's brothers expect to receive) provided by the bride's family (generally by the bride's father, or by her oldest brother or other male next of kin if her father is no longer living) and is *theoretically* intended to ensure that she will have a little something to fall back on in the short term if her husband dies, though in practice it's just what the new couple uses to get themselves started. In the West this has been largely supplanted by the "bridal shower", which is basically a crowd-sourced version of the same thing. If the man is paying money to the woman's family, the term for that is "bride price", i.e., the price paid for the bride. This too has been largely obviated in the West. (The custom now seems to be that the bride's family pays for the wedding and gets nothing in return, other than possibly a chance at grandchildren.) HTH.HAND.

serpentza this is the first time I comment on your video, appreciate your effort showing us your life there in china but your generalizing is somehow misleading. in every culture people will consider economy status and social class as well as love when talking about marriage because most people in most cultures have that security need money can provide. As a Chinese person I think it has something to do with the social welfare of china. People can not really rely much on the government because the help government offer to the homeless and jobless is far behind countries in EU. Yes we also criticize people born in 50s 60s are so much hungry for money because their experience of poverty were so bad and their education were different( lack of good education). However things are changing for people born in 80s, 90s and after 2000, people spend more time in what they like, they don't actually worry much about money because their parents will give them whatever they have. If your parents-in-law also care about your income and saving that doesn't mean they want take money from you, they just want to be sure their daughter will not suffer from poverty, they want to be sure their grandchildren will be well taken care of. If you meet their expectation, fine, they will support you. You will not be surprise one day they will give all they have to your wife and you. That is Chinese people's marriage view. You can not just say people are only chasing money. Also, many of my friend born in 80s get married with the support from parents from both sides, because the one child policy a marriage for a man and woman just like merge of two companies. some of them may confront a harsh mother-in-law as you described in the video. Sorry for your friend, I am sure it happens in every cultures of all beliefs. China can not be an exception.

+Joe Chow You phrased it right. Love is just love, and it can make you happy or unhappy, but marriage is a contract. What's the point of marriage, if you are not willing to compromise for the physical well being of your partner FOR LIFE? Love doesn't feed you, love doesn't give you shelter, love doesn't give you healthcare. Money does!

we do a similar thing with the red packet here on the island of Cyprus (Greek side).. normal friends and just guests give over 50 euros, close friends over 100, best man and family over 500 euros. The bride and groom plus parents stand at the entrance of the reception to welcome the guests, on saying hi you give the envelope to the groom then you enter.. sometimes the lines are very long and the groom and bride plus parents will have to stand there for over 2 hours shaking peoples hands before they to can join the wedding.

As a foreigner, if you're confident your wife loves you, you can put your foot down. Saying 'no' when your mother in law demands a grand kid, or tell her you won't discuss it or it's your body. Secondly, it's better to marry a girl who lives away from her family, i.e. I live in BJ and my wife is from Zhejiang. Perfect. I get to keep her parents on a leash and we visit maybe 3 or 4 times a year About the racism, it blew my wife's mind that my parents didn't give a shit about the race of the girl I was marrying. The first question my parents said is 'does she make you happy?' nothing at all about 'Is she from xyz' 'Is she black?' 'What's her job?' etc. I wish Chinese parents could change to this thinking. About the dowry, I do not understand this, and for this reason. The idea is you are taking her away from her family so you should pay, HOWEVER, the Chinese girl's family will still want to live with you, and expect you to pay for everything and possibly extract money out of you. I also do not understand that, if you marry a younger girl, say 22-23-24, then their parents will mostly be providing for them in larger cities. I.e. paying for any hospital stays, possibly travel, everyday living etc. however once you marry that responsibility changes to the husband. So you're essentially paying a dowry to then have to pay extra living costs for your wife, blows my mind. Finally, about the wedding hong bao, in my case we married abroad so we didn't have the whole 'how much did he spend on their huge wedding?' bullshit floating around her hometown, however I've had friends who paid a lot for the wedding, then held it, and his wife's dad insisted on collecting all the hong bao and my friend didn't receive anything from it. Money is god here, more than anything else.

Damn, I would have been fucking livid. It seems that Chinese always go for whichever situation helps them monetarily the most. I.e. in the UK we split the wedding in half, in China they insist on the Chinese way if the man is marrying a Chinese girl because they save money. Normally they would give the couple a car or house, however if marrying a foreigner the family won't buy such gifts. Etc.

Its nice to know I won't be alone over there. Maybe I'll run into you guys..yea right. Today I'll binge watch ADV China as well. Just subbed to all 3 channels. Keep up the good work. On the topic of all the haters that seem to follow you ..I can only say it makes things more interesting and from everything I've seen you just tell it the way it is. Every country has its problems and you talk about SA's many many problems..USA as well. Its not like your picking on China, you just LIVE there and most of these things aren't known to foreigners like me bc of the media unlike here where everyday its something bad on the news..that said, it's very insightful. Anyways, love what your doing and the quality of the videos is top notch. Are you having a meet up in the foreseable future? Cheers from the U.S. of A. (Oregon). Ps. What stands out to me in all of these videos and similar videos is how quiet everyone is. No one whooping in the background trying to get on your video, no one speaking loudly on their cell phones or walking around with their faces buried in their phone, not a ton of honking horns or loud mufflers - everyone just seems mature and respectful of one another, but strangely very curious about the guy making the recording. In america, chinese couple dowry is really symbolic only so usually is only 999$ or 9999$. Mainland chinese people are probably more traditional because here in america chinese men are not expect to pay for the car , or the house, or the furniture. The couple will have a mortgage and most of the couple will not live with the in law. But the expectation to have grand child are the same here...so if your mother arrange a blind date with the best prospect she find and you want to refuse: after the date your mom will ask you. So you like him? You: Yeah, he is a very honest person, he told me that he might have fertility problem but his family is not aware so don't tell his mom...and your mom never talk about him again and your mom will eventually refuse any other date with that guy on your behalf!

It is a natural selection. If you can not even afford the cost of getting married, that indicates you are not driven enough, smart enough, hard working enough, etc. If there is any other way to measure if you are good enough for the family, maybe they will take that way. But right now, money, a measure of success and hard work, is the primary indicator in the natural selection, Chinese style.

My girlfriend of 4 years is Japanese but is very westernized. I didn’t start dating her just because I wanted an Asian girlfriend, but just because we happened to click. I would advise people not to go to date a Chinese or Japanese person just because of their nationality, because with that mentality you’re probably not going to set yourself up for a healthy relationship.

Hi Winston, thank you for such informative vlogs. I am from Ireland and my wife is from Sri Lanka. In every video i have watched, so far ,i have applied your advice to my own experiences and they fit perfectly to differing degrees of severity .
