you can do it! I just graduated in December from an ADN program and took NCLEX on the 18th (pretty sure I passed, fingers are still crossed though). I'm working on a temp license at the nursing home until I get a hospital job in the city I'm moving to and the pay raise is sooooo nice and makes it feel like it was worth it! Those "4 days off" is pretty much spent on relieving the stress and strain from burning feet and aching arms and hands. Nursing is physically demanding that is so true. Having an hobby keeps the mind sane, your video is on point on the things that a new grad has to face in the nursing profession.

You CANNOT beat the schedule in this field. I think that is the biggest reason why some go into it. Money should never be a huge factor but having the opportunity to have work life balance working 3 days and then travel, do hobbies. My cousin would do travel nursing full time working 3 days and the other 4 days she would spend at the beach at base rate of 2 grand a week. Cant beat it, its a no-brained for me

In dialysis we worked 13’s but with two half hour breaks and 3 fifteens. And it was not like in the hospital where nurses eat their food at the desk. You have to leave and go to the break room and nobody can bother you. Our 15’s we often just condensed them into a late afternoon break. I think it’s important to step off the floor and units should do a better job at supporting breaks.

Great info for new grads. I graduated with my BSN in 2010 and at the time I was making about 22$/hr on a PCU unit, day shift, 0.9 FTE. I ended up getting my NP degree in 2014. Warms my heart to hear how much you are making and true, each year you can expect a pay increase which I personally refer to as a cost of kicking adjustment.

@@StudentNurseDaryl Hi. For me I knew early on that nursing wasn’t for me. Understaffing and high pressures here in Ireland, it was too much for me. I was 22 and I felt burnt out. But I have a keen interest in both patient care and the field of sciences, radiation therapy provides both. For me, It’s a better fit. Definitely having my nursing background is so beneficial because now as a student RT I have found communicating with patients and dealing with their side effects from the radiation very natural :)

I graduate my ADN program in August! I work 7p-7:30a as a CNA in a city now. I wish more new grads would share their pay! It protects us all from hospitals scamming new nurses. I hear some new grad RNs get around $20 an hour, so ridiculous.

Great video! Stick with it guy! My first job as a new grad was $600/ month, in 1968. I retired at 66 after making well into 6 figures for most of my last 15 years, doing consulting and interim nursing and hospital management. Diploma in Nursing, BSN and Masters in Nursing Admin. I think doing the DNP is the way to go today.. i would do it that way at your age.! Good luck!😊

At my hospital, we also have a 30 minute lunch and three 15 minute rest breaks, but on night shift we just take one 15 minute rest break and combine the other two with our lunch so we have a full hour. A lot of people on night shift take naps during that time. It's pretty nice.

Best wishes to all that select a career as a RN, BSN. I just retired after 35 years as an RN, BSN. It's doable. Just find an area of nursing you really like. Keep exploring until you find it. It is extremely important you achieve a good work life balance and don't become burnt out. It's a lot of time and money to becoming an RN, BSN, so make it work. If you can't make it work give some thought to crossing over to a physician assistant. For some strange reason the PA's earn more anyway. Good luck to each of you. We need good nurses.

Thank you so much for this comment. Ive been considering becoming a nurse for a while, and seeing all of the negative posts online makes me feel hesitant to make the leap. I know nursing is a very broad and flexible field, so theres got to be good areas, and some bad ones. i feel like we hear much more negativity about nursing then positivity because all of the happy nurses arent ranting online about it haha.

PAs earn more money because they have a 4 year bachelors degree and then a masters in physician assistant studies on top of that. They can also move further and obtain a doctorate. Being a PA can be a great occupation, but quite a bit of work to even get accepted into a program and is extremely rigorous. You can’t work during PA school and often student loans are hefty. But, well worth it when all said and done.
@peanutsassyathena

@@wjsb437 I'm aware of all of that. RNs can do the same thing, have a masters and a doctorate. My point is, an RN can transition to a PA if desired instead of advanced nursing degrees. PA programs were not offered in my local universities until years after I had obtained my RN, BSN and ongoing education for a Masters in Nursing. Had a PA program or a MD been offered at time I would have either gone for the PA or MD. I had already completed all classes necessary for premed except for four classes. Had there been more medical educations options at the time my choices would have been different. Today more choices are out there and I'm trying to educate RNs don't feel locked into being an RN. Consider becoming a PA and even consider becoming a MD. After 3+ decades working as an RN I'm finally retired, but still here to encourage RNs to reach higher. I remember being very frustrated because I wanted to learn more than what was being taught at a RN level. I really wanted to learn at a MD level. For those of you that have the academic ability don't short yourselves - reach higher.

@@peanutsassyathena I understand what you’re saying! I didn’t mean for my comment to come off rude, I just wanted to offer more info as sadly many people are unaware of what PAs are. And I agree, if you have ability and want to put in some time, go further with your degree! I don’t generally see too many RNs moving to PA nowadays, just because NP is so much more accessible. Thank you for all your years dedicated and for pushing younger generations to reach higher!

Wow. 6 years ago I started with my RN, BSN in Salt Lake City, UT making $22/hr. I have since left and have been traveling for a couple of years, so I have no idea what a new grad there makes now. Given the ridiculous spike in housing, and, well..... everything, I cannot even begin to imagine being able to buy a home on that pitiful salary now.
