There’s a graphic design reason you don’t want a face on the cover, too! There’s a really interesting article from AIGA about book cover design, where they say that if there’s a face on the cover, that face ends up being projected onto the character and takes away from the reader experience

Hey Emma, I only read Shatter Me book series a while ago to improve my English skills, and while it's definitely junk literature, it serves its purpose for entertainment. I found it fun to practice with the vocabulary used in the series. By the way, I always enjoy watching your videos and having fun with them, greetings!!.

I haven't read any of Amitav Ghosh's contemporary books but one of his earlier books(I Believe his second work)The Shadow Lines is the only book I have given 10/10 this year. It's very different from Gun Island (it's a family drama) it also probably has the most accessible stream of consciousness writing I have read, highly recommended

My fav Amitav Ghosh book is The Glass Palace. Its a gem in storytelling, an epic set across Myanmar and India during British rule. I highly recommend it.I'm planning on rereading it but I've got tons of books on my TBR list ( including Winter in Sokcho and Convenience Store woman).

I agree with you about some of the elements of Latitudes of Longing (which is a banger of a title). I was really immersed in the beginning, but then felt like I had to move on from those characters and that part of the story just as I'd fallen in love with it. I think the book was very ambitious and maybe a little too ambitious. At some points I felt like the meandering nature of the book lost me a little, where I felt like maybe I had missed something. I thought it was beautifully written though.
@chy8697
@chy8697 Жыл бұрын
the way you feel about latitudes of longing is how i felt about "someone who will love you and all your damaged glory"! the first story was so gripping that i wish it was only about the couple-- everything fell flat after that.

i read amitav ghosh's the hungry tide for my environmental lit class and had very similar feelings as you did with gun island! it's a fantastic story with so much interesting commentary on history, politics and its connection to identity, and human connection with the environment, which i loved it for, but the dialogue felt so unnatural. the characters themselves seemed to exist to just verbalize information to the reader, which put me off.

I think a really great resource for your essay on Gun Island is "Once Upon a Virus" by Diane Goldstein. It's about AIDS legends and how beliefs spread, people interpret their meaning, and how that informs their actions. It is truly about how ideas and legends spread like a virus. Good luck!

i'd like to recommend a book to you that i read in march and that's in memoriam by alice winn. it's a lovestory between two soldiers at the western front during WWI. they have to wrestle with their feelings for each other while constantly being confronted with the death of their friends and the horrors of war, not knowing if either of them will get out of this alive. this book turned me inside out, it's beautifully written, it's romantic, it's horrific, it's devastating. definitely the best thing i've read in a long time and i really recommend it. i hope you get a chance to read and that it gives you as much as it gave me.
