There should be no "minimum expected tip". Employers need to pay their staff a decent wage and tips be based on good service.

I agree, I have absolutely no problem tipping for good service, it's not expected or required where I live, makes it more appreciated and it's a tough job at the best of times 👍

@@mongo64071 not bad. Just above the minimum wage in the UK. Should go to $20 dollars an hour like California.
@mongo640717 ай бұрын
@@EvilSie also, in the US, restaurant workers are also getting tips, often 20%. A new proposal is to make tips tax free wages. So depending on where you work, you can make pretty good pay.
@EvilSie7 ай бұрын
@@mongo64071 I'm all for the workers making as much money as possible, I just feel like the primary responsibility for paying these workers should be the employer's. Nobody should be paid as little as $7.25 (or $2.13) an hour.

Nobody tells me how much I'm required to tip. I tip for good service not just because they think I should. Customer service is the schtick. It's literally their job. If their customer service is weak they won't be getting a tip. Period. Any place that forces a tip I won't ever patronize again.

@nigel84997 ай бұрын
A tip - or gratuity - is the money that goes straight to the employees and can form part of their hourly pay. A service charge, however, is an additional payment for the business or establishment, and not specifically for the staff. I imagine only a small amount of the 20% goes to staff unfortunately in many establishments.

It should be noted (and I'm surprised Lee hasn't pointed this out very much) that New York City is just plain unique (in the U.S. and the world). If you don't like what you see in Lee's videos there are plenty of other places to go... but it's the same as last year's videos from Lee; we won't be changing. What we (most of us) will do is run over and offer directions if you walk down the street holding a map. I certainly have done that hundreds of times. Even more fun for me if you don't speak English. Plus, if you're French and I have to stumble through the language to answer, I'll feel very proud after you compliment my accent. (If you're British I won't expect a compliment unless you were expecting a Brooklyn accent and don't hear it, since I don't normally speak that way... maybe sometimes on request.)

Thanks for sharing these!! As an American, you are showing me as well as other Americans things we may never get to see in our lifetime. I do not travel anymore so these are great. I like that you lived in the area so you know a few things too. Always glad to have Brits here. I am a Garrard but not the one who owns that big jewelry store there. Too bad. I could use a few bucks. MY family came from there a couple of centuries ago. One was a Duke. Two brothers came here. One went south USA and the other north to the midwest in Kentucky to find their fortunes. I am from the southern brother. WE did not do as well as the Kentucky ones did.

What I understand there’s a problem with Tipping because the New York authorities made everybody pay a minimum wage, and some Americans are saying that if they’re getting paid a minimum wage they don’t need tipping? Is this true? ?
@mongo640717 ай бұрын
NYC has a 15$ an hour minimum wage for restaurant workers. They get tips on top of that. Tipping was always done to offset the lower wages that restaurants paid. But now they pay more and pass that cost to the customer, some customers feel tipping is too much.

Starbucks, in many countries, only exists where American tourist go, as the locals won’t drink such poor quality coffee. Donuts in Poland are so much better. That crepe looked unbelievably bad value. American food is so unhealthy - even the flour is over processed. My daughter in law has been told that her problems with gluten will be much diminished in Europe because of how flour is processed there compared with the USA. Yes, I’m ranting about USA food and coffee, but with good reason. Two months in Europe and one month in Australia this year has really opened my eyes to how bad American food is (there is a reason that the medical advisor from my health insurance company told me a few years back that the American food and drink industry is killing Americans - profit before … everything!). Lee - the travel vlog about NYC is interesting, I love the city, but the food aspects now need a health warning, as well as your warnings on cost, tax and tips.

Wasn’t Gaslight the venue where Joan Baez introduced the shy Bobby Zimmerman to when he first arrived in New York? Maybe it was The Bitter End. Anyway, by the time they were both on the Rolling Thunder tour, most fans assumed Baez was tugging on Dylan’s coattails, mainly because he was the folk superstar, and she appeared to spend most of her time staring at him adoringly. Don’t think twice, it’s alright. Peace 🏴

Minimum tip 20%? Another reason I'll never visit the USA. Crepes/pancakes (known as clătite here in Romania) are a popular street food and are priced between £1 and £2 depending on the size and toppings. Mountain Dew has been available in the UK for ages. My son-in-law introduced me to it in 2010 when he and my daughter spent a holiday with me in Romania.

I rarely, if ever, go into Starbucks. There's perfectly decent coffee available almost everywhere for half the price. Plus, I don't have to remember what the quirky product names mean. Anyway, if they have working coffee roasting machines inside, it's a wonder the whole place isn't just on fire, based on what the coffee tastes like (to me). Note that I'm not really complaining about the prices, I'm complaining about the coffee. Everything is expensive in NYC. I'm just lucky that I had the opportunity to buy my co-op apartment 40 years ago. So my complaints about Starbucks are expressed by going elsewhere for coffee. Likewise, I could express my distaste for the very high cost of living here by moving, which I haven't done.
