Sarah, if you want to save money, you have to start cooking Polish cuisine: soups, dumplings, potatoes with meat, groats with sauces, sandwiches. You will spend so much less
@SarahAchleithner6 ай бұрын
Yep, I definitely know that. However, we choose to not cook with a lot of heavy meat and simple carbs and instead purchase mostly fruits, vegetables, and lean meat. This works best for us, especially since we follow a very high protein, lower calorie diet.

This is honestly quite reasonable and similar to what people buy here if they make a decent salary. The main difference I've got to say is the fruit. You seem to be buying small plastic boxes of greenhouse, or supermarket fruits. While the more "native" thing to do would be to find a street market supplied by local farms and go for the seasonal produce. When your favourite seasonal produce (go strawberries!) is best and cheapest, buy more of it and freeze some of it for later, make jam or (in case of vegetables) pickle it for the winter. Most people I know wouldn't get oranges in late spring or summer, because we're in berry season and we want to eat all the cheap berries we can get. Oranges and tangerines are winter fruits, they are usually cheaper in the winter since hey come from the southern hemisphere. I don't know the current situation with produce markets in Kraków but you could try Hala Targowa @ Grzegórzecka 3/11, 31-532 Kraków. I recall it being quite good a couple of years ago.

The season for berries starts in May and it is rather a late May. The first available berries are usually honeyberries and they're just started to bloom in my garden ;-). I hope the strawberries, gooseberries, raspberries, cowberries, blueberries, tayberries, blackberries, serviceberries and currants will start soon :).
@SarahAchleithner6 ай бұрын
Blackberries are definitely my favorite berry! They are soooo good when they're fresh, especially from the garden!
@T_Witek_T6 ай бұрын
@@SarahAchleithnerI prefer blackcurrants but all are good. And, as I mainly work from home, I may just go out and eat one or two fresh (maybe more ;-)). Of course in the summer, not now ;-).

I live in the UK and inflation has gone through the roof since covid, Brexit and Ukraine war. Some grocery prices have gone up by 60%-70% and more. Energy prices are crazy high too. I spend around £70-£80 per week on groceries just for myself and I don't always get what I want. And if you add rent and other expenses onto that you're left with very little at the end of the month. Hopefully earnings will catch up soon and everything returns to normal. I had to drastically cut back on eating out and takeaways. Before covid a pint of beer in a pub cost around £3 and now it's £7.50 😱

I would like to say something because I used to run a food production plants and I have some knowledge. In the American understanding, 100% of meat produced in Poland is organic, why do I say so? In Poland, the use of hormones can result in imprisonment, and meat is controlled at 4 stages. There is an obligation to add bacteriostatic substances to animal feed, but there are strict rules on withdrawal periods and they are rigorously controlled (high fines). Antibiotics are administered, but similarly withdrawal periods are strictly controlled. Livestock that arrives at the slaughterhouse is checked through tests before being unloaded. Finding antibiotic residues eliminates the entire batch and is disposed of. The breeder loses 100% of the money invested in production and is also given a fine, which is not a small one. However, when it comes to meat of other origins, it is not controlled by very strict Polish services and it is difficult to be 100% sure, which is why in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Denmark, etc. there were e.g. dioxin scandals, in Poland I cannot imagine something like that like this. Paradoxically, the most risky are imported vegetables, not meat, because it is easier to hide various unhealthy medications.

Thanks for sharing! I'm always so impressed by the meat quality, especially compared to the US 😲

I would say, the prices are compatible to US shopping at Trader Joe or Whole Foods.
@SarahAchleithner6 ай бұрын
Yes, I agree with that, especially with Trader Joe's because the prices seem to be pretty stable! However, because prices in Krakow have gone up by 50%, it feels like an absurd amount for the same items.
@S0nNYBlaze3 ай бұрын
Not sure where you are shopping at Sarah but that is way expensive, we were just in Kraków in January at my sisters in Wieliczka and we shopped at Lidl, we bought probably 3x more food/cases of water/toilet paper etc for 6 people and it was $123. You may want to look for fresh fruit markets, you can get a 2kg basket of fruit pretty cheap.
@fuzekle6 ай бұрын
Seems a little expensive even for me and I've lived here in Poland all my life. Where are you shopping at? Carrefour is a little bit more expensive than other shops. Especially Carrefour express, Biedronka and Lidl are one of the cheapests but theres still good quality stuff there

2 questions, can you give some examples of individual prices for a few items, eggs, strawberries, chicken, and also, which type of store you are purchasing this from. Is it a discount store like a Walmart or a regular supermarket or something like Trader Joe. Thanks
@SarahAchleithner6 ай бұрын
We shop at Carrefour, which is considered to be a mid-range grocery store in Europe. I would say it's in-between Walmart and Trader Joe's, as some things are more expensive than others. For example, 20 eggs is ~$4 USD, a quarter pound of strawberries (one small package) is $2.50 USD, and 2 pounds of chicken breast is ~$9 USD.

11:12 Dear, where do you live, I see that you are learning Polish and you have been living in Poland since 2018. Don't you know that in 2020-2022 there was SHITDEMIA all over the world SHITVID - 19 Everything was closed all over the world, it was a deliberate policy of governments, not only the Polish one. A global reset controlled from the top. Inflation is everywhere in Poland, and PiS's social policy overlaps with it.They pay 800 plus for the birth of a child. This is a social policy straight from the Bantustan, creating social pathology. In addition, there is the issue of the war in Ukraine and the issue of 6 to 9 million Ukrainian refugees. The Polish government also pays 800 plus. In Poland, the industrial economy is failing. Money is printed. as in countries with dictatorial regimes in South America This additionally fuels inflation in Poland. Best regards to all, Dear Sirs, Robert from Poland
