The Michigan State Spartans are 3-3 (1-2) heading into their bye week and I want to talk about Michigan State Football and what I think of their 2024 season so far. For starters, Jonathan Smith has brought this team forward compared to last season, as the Spartans have noticeably improved on defense and feature an offense with a higher ceiling. However, quarterback Aidan Chiles has had his mighty struggles with turnovers and injuries are piling up on the offensive line. Can Michigan State turn their season around now that Ohio State and Oregon are out of the way, or will they have to wait until 2025 and beyond? We talk about all of this and more in this episode of College Football with Sam. Chiles has clearly made some steps with his decision making but offensive line just is not doing their part, primarily due to injuries and inexperience. Offensive line steps up so we can get a run game going and Chiles has more time to pass and i thinkg 7 wins is still possible but if not probably 5 or 6 at best

Could be better, but could be WAY worse. I can see a path for MSU to both win (O-Line begins to gel and Chiles keeps making progress) and lose (KLA becomes ineffective, injury woes worsen) these last six games, so I think we'll split the difference.

Chilles was all hype and no production. I would sit him out and let him get some splinters as a backup.

You'd rather him play through mistakes this season and come back stronger next year. Doesent make sense to stunt his growth by benching him

PFF grades MSUs pass block at a 44 btw. 10 pts below the 23 season. saying you shouldnt compare them to the 23 team but should be compared to the 22 is Asinine. 2022 went 5-7 and couldnt compete with minnesota in there home stadium with a full coaching staff. Saying this offensive line is much improved from last season is insane to. Nick Samac is now a baltimore raven and Jd Duplain has made it on to the panthers squad. Obviously that line sucked to. Finally comparing aids numbers to team numbers is stupid to. We started 3 QBs. Why not mention Aid already has more passing yards then katin did on less pass attempts. Aid is a hot mess for sure, but the focus on him is just absurd at this point.

If they don’t beat Iowa out of the bye there won’t be a bowl.

Probably not, but then again, Michigan, Illinois, Purdue, and Rutgers are teams that may be easier to beat. I wouldn't want to face a Top 10 defense with an elite RB unless I was a Top 5 team like Ohio State.

Nobody ever predicted MSU would compete for a BigTen championship. But MSU is not basement level either. They just came off back-to-back games against elite teams, one of which they had to travel across the country on 6 days rest. That’s going to totally skew the stats and perception. BC actually isn’t a bad team, narrowly losing to Missouri on the road (they lost to Virginia without their QB Castellanos, who basically is the key to their entire offense), and O’Brien is a solid coach. Apart from Michigan, MSU matches up talent-wise pretty well against the remaining schedule. Iowa and Michigan will be tough, for sure. Indiana is everyone’s darling right now, but their schedule has been horrendously weak (MSU would arguably be undefeated also if they played Indiana’s schedule to this point). Illinois and Rutgers are solid teams, but nowhere near as strong as Ohio State or Oregon-MSU arguably has as much or more talent, and just as good or better coaching. If you call Purdue a likely W, I can definitely see MSU going 2-3 or maybe even 3-2 against the five remaining teams of Iowa, @Michigan, Indiana, @Illinois, and Rutgers. I still think Sparty is on pace for 6-6 and a bowl, which is what I was expecting at the beginning of the season.

The two biggest issues on Michigan State right now is the O-line and the QB. O-line has been incredibly banged up, I believe losing their starting RT and both Starting Guards, and that has lead to a very weak interior, and a number of plays where we’re getting completely blown off the ball at the line of scrimmage. It’s been incredibly hit or miss, and I’ve watched at least 20 plays this year where the LT will seal the edge, just to watch the C and G blow their assignments for loss of yardage. On the QB play, Chiles is doing nothing to help any of the issues with the O-line. One play he holds onto the ball for way too long trying to play hero and eats a sack, and the next he’s being chicken shit and not letting a play develop. I don’t usually do this, but we lost the Boston College game completely because of Chiles poor play. He is massively inexperienced and it shows, and I’m concerned at the lack of any significant improvement on his decision making in the fist 6 games. One other thing I dislike about how Chiles is operating under center is how many checks he’s making at the line each play. I think he might be confusing the line and receivers half the time with how much he’s trying to do himself, and he should trust Lindgren’s play calling more. On the play calling, I only have one significant issue, and it’s that Nate Carter is getting significantly more carries than Kayron Lynch-Adams, despite KLA being the clearly better runner. I’ll be seriously concerned if MSU comes out of this Bye week looking the exact same as the past 2 weeks. Especially if Aidan Chiles continues to make boneheaded decisions with the football. MSU finishes 5-7 eeking out an upset, but ultimately missing a bowl.

They looked stronger and more dominant in the trenches compared to Ohio state against MSU. Ohio state clearly has the skill position players and may have the edge there but idk. Just based on the eye test, they looked like the more complete dominant team but we'll see soon
