I think the main problem with James Corden as Barry is that his acting turned a gay character into a gay character for straight people. It very much felt like he was playing into stereotypes and (while this was the writing) adding the "gay character forgives homophobic parent who traumatised him with a hug" arc just felt like it was catering for the straight viewers of the movie
@samscroggins68144 жыл бұрын

Yes. It did feel like Corden was playing gay, when a different, hypothetical actor could simply have played the character without adding the mannerisms. Also, I feel as though Barry should read a bit older than James Corden does. I haven't seen the Broadway play (other than the Tony performance), and I don't know who originated the part, but it's really hard to see anyone casting that Barry to play Franklin Roosevelt to Meryl Streep's Eleanor.

I honestly agree with the whole Barry thing, I didn’t like the fact that Deedee just called his mom...coming out and dealing with homophobic parents is a very overwhelming and terrifying situation and could also be potentially triggering to Barry to see his mom, a woman who literally hated him for his sexuality. I might be going too serious since it’s only a movie but yeah that’s all I’ve got to say
@trinaq4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I utterly agree with your stance! I know that Dee Dee ringing Barry's mother was framed as a "selfless act", and her learning to do something for others instead of herself. But she had no idea of knowing that Barry and his mother secretly wanted to reconcile, and can be construed as Dee Dee going behind her friend's back, and potentially forcing him into an uncomfortable position. Thankfully, things turned out well, but what if they hadn't, thanks to Dee Dee's meddling? 😔💔

Was about to make the same comment about You Happened! For me the best part of that song is Emma and Alyssa singing their duet, which makes sense considering that’s all the song originally was. Cutting The Acceptance Song I was fine with since it makes more sense and was more comical than just doing the whole song, however cutting the end of Dance With You also makes no sense since Emma’s bridge after Alyssa leaves states the main point of the song and show. Lastly changing the music of the dance breaks in Tonight Belongs to You and It’s Time To Dance is horrible as the music that was changed out sounds out of place in the score in my opinion.

As a gay actor, I wasn't upset by the casting of James Corden as much as the choices he made as a straight actor for the character. The way he was putting on a voice, excessively gesturing with his hands, checking out a fake Grinder app amid minors (yikes). It translates to a stereotypical view of what a gay man is. I feel as though we could've gotten a less stereotypical and more nuanced and authentic Barry from a gay actor.

I'm a lesbian in musical theatre, so this musical means a lot to me. I really enjoyed it. I just felt like Emma drowned out every now and then because of everything that was going on around her. Further than that, quite brilliant. I personally don't mind a hetero actor playing a gay person, as long as it is executed well and respectfully. We're actors, it's what we do. We portray vulnerable people in vulnerable moments that we may never have experienced ourselves. I think James did an amazing job. I didn't feel like he was mocking or disrespecting the LGBT+ community and did an amazing job at portraying this role. But that's just my opinion.

@marialuisaoliveira10094 жыл бұрын
I’m bi and an actress and I fully agree!! Of course, we need more opportunities to LGBT actors, but it also bothers me this notion that lgbt characters (in terms of sexually, not gender) can only be played by LGBT people. Like acting is about embracing others identities, if they’re doing it with vulnerability and respect, I don’t see why straight people shouldn’t play it. And I think James did an awesome job.

As a gay person I wanna say I actually really have a problem with the idea that gay actors must play gay roles. I think it puts actors in an uncomfortable position where they have to make their identities public or where directors are trying to guess at who people are. Both of those are really not great. Furthermore I think it kinda pushes the idea that lgbt+ folks should only play lgbt+ roles which doesn't feel right either. In general I want the right person to play the role, and that can look like a lot of things. And often times a gay actor is the best person for a gay character because they have those experiences to pull from, but not always. I know there are plenty of gay men I would not be cast as just cause of my casting type and personality. I thought james cordon did a good job but I can also see why people were disappointed and upset with him in that role. I hope I articulated this well
@marialuisaoliveira10094 жыл бұрын
Exactly!
@Lisa-pg9ej4 жыл бұрын
@David Dolce That's just what I was gonna say - if a character happens to be gay but that's not a big part of the story, it's not bad if a straight person plays them (though it would still be good if the character had a LGBTQ+ actor) I think of it this way - if Prince Herbert from Spamalot is played by a straight guy, that's fine, but characters like Alison Bechtel from Fun Home and Barry from The Prom should definitely be played by LGBTQ+ actors. If their sexuality is central to the story, there needs to be an accurate representation in the actors that play them.
@hayleyrowan66704 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your perspective. I think it helped my put my finger on what I think the issue is. In general I agree with your sentiment that gay people need not play gay characters, nor straight play straight. But as it relates to this movie, I think the rule is changed because the topic of the production is about the hardship of LGBTQ+ persecution. If the character Barry happened to be gay, but the movie was about the experience of going to the zoo, I do not think it would be offensive to have Corden play him. But in this movie, I feel differently.
@nurailidepaepe27834 жыл бұрын
i think it's more about when they're celebrities that everyone knows their sexuality of. especially in this case where andrew (a gay man obv) got a lesser "straight" role while james corden (who everyone knows is straight since again, famous) got a gay role where he sometimes falls into stereotypes..
@rh22194 жыл бұрын
@@hayleyrowan6670 This makes a whole lot for sense, and it's super valid to feel this way. I don't really have a clear cut answer because the representation aspect is super important, but the problems I have with the idea still stand. It's a complicated issue. Thanks for sharing what you think. I don't think any hard rules about lgbtq+ casting are particularly helpful, but I very much would like a way for more lgbtq+ voices to be involved in theatre as a whole.

On the whole James Corden thing: I'm a gay guy, and while I don't speak for everyone, everything I've seen of James Corden as Barry is pretty much the sole reason I've decided to not watch this movie. (I've seen bits and pieces, but not the whole movie together.) He feels like a way more superficial character than in the musical. Brooks Ashmanskas was flamboyant, but he also had heart and made the role feel truly genuine. James Corden just feels uncomfortable in the role to me. Depending on the scene, he's either a cartoonish and offensive stereotype or trying to be emotional and relatable but failing. Barry was my favorite character in the original show because of how much I related to him. In a show that's about being gay, he was the main gay male character, and I loved him. Now that love is gone. I don't know if I can ever look at the character the same way again.

I am actually also a gay man, and I’m a huge fan of this musical and while I had a lot of problems with the movie adaptation, James Corden was never a problem for me and he seemed like the played the role of Barry exactly how I’d expect his character to. Now I don’t speak for everyone and I do understand that some people have a problem with his flamboyancy and see it as stereotyping, but having known his character from the musical beforehand, it seemed like the perfect portrayal. Also one thing I especially liked is that they seemed to try and ground Barry a bit more than he is in the musical and tried to humanize with the character more. I recommend you give it a watch and form your own opinion about James’s portrayal.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of James Corden in general, but from everything I've seen this makes me even more upset than I was before at him. Same thing with his emotional side. The character doesn't feel whole or as genuine as he did in the musical to me. I also feel like because Corden isn't gay, it makes his scenes where he talks about coming out feel more awkward imo. I mean in the musical, it was never that she was unsure about her sexuality. Caitlin Kinnunen actually described Emma as secure but insecure because while she was an awkward person, she was VERY sure of who she was and who she loved. I liked having that person who was a little awkward because a lot of times the only thing the lesbian characters struggle with is their sexuality, and then they're otherwise confident characters. She was one of the few awkward gays out there who was very relatable. I did find it interesting almost using Emma's confidence as a mask.

I liked this take on Emma. I think it allowed Jo Ellen to interpret the character without being a carbon copy of Caitlin’s. One of the benefits of confident!Emma was her breakdown at the fake prom. "not a lot going on at the moment" I'll side-eye that. I probably will at some point watch the prom with my friends but I realized recently that I don't like modern-day realism in media. None of my favourite books, tv shows, or musicals are set in "the real world, present day". It'll be interesting for me to see the Prom bc while the music gives it some non-realism, I have never connected to high-school stories period (High school musical is not my thing) . Okay, so, about the James Corden thing, as a gay man, my opinion is that it wasn't 100% wrong, but there's definitely a lot of things they should've improved, James performance on the dramatic parts and the music numbers was great, he had me crying, and singing, and dancing, the problem was, at least for me, he just couldn't deliver the comedic parts, he was clearly trying too hard and that kinda got in the way If I was directing, I would try to fix that, I'm not totally in favor of casting only gay actors for gay characters, I think every actor should be able to play whatever part it is offered no matter what your sexual orientation in real life is, for example, Andrew Rannels, a gay actor playing a straight character

@meme74124 жыл бұрын
I kinda thought that at first too, but the more you think about it the more fitting it seems for her character. Emma has been hiding who she is and how she feels for so long. It makes sense that she would constantly be masquerading behind a smile. Then you take into consideration her parents reaction to her coming out and it feels even more fitting. The two people who are supposed to love and accept her no matter what completely turned their backs on her when she told them who she was. The majority of the town was also intolerant so she had to hide from them too. After all that it must have become second nature to pretend to be something she isn't, to pretend she's always happy. Anyways I didn't mean to type this much but that's just my take idk
@wordswarsandsymphonies3 жыл бұрын
yeah it's like, no matter what emma was saying or what emotion she was supposed to be expressing, she just smiled the entire time, except for maybe two scenes. the acting was bad and it took me out of the movie and made me not really care about emma. i think it also killed the chemistry with alyssa
@monicaenloe76354 жыл бұрын
It was hard to believe that Emma didn’t know how to dress for prom when literally all her outfits were already a m a z i n g. I liked how in the musical you can sort of see Emma’s character development and her finding herself through the clothes that she’s wearing. That was pretty much taken away in the movie because her style is already amazing and there’s no progression. (But I still loved the movie so so much)
@mhawang82044 жыл бұрын
I think the point is to contrast her with the other kids at her high school. The popular kids wear "basic" outfits. Emma's style is a bit quirky (and amazing in our eyes) but would make her stick out like a sore thumb in Edgewater, Indiana. The stage Emma is a shy geek; the film Emma is a quirky art student/theatre kid. That's the vibe I got anyway.

One thing I found really interesting watching this movie was the fact that Emma is almost always smiling, at least a little bit, even when she is obviously falling apart. I spent the first half or so of the movie wondering why the actress made that choice, and then I got it: I do that! I have actually had people tell me to my face that they think I am happy all the time because I just automatically smile. Once I realized that, it made me feel very seen and less alone, because I don't know anyone else who does this. It made Emma feel very human and relatable to me, even though I have never been in anything like the situation she was in because I am not gay. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie, and it was so nice to just sit down and watch a new movie musical, since I have not seen a show in person since........... last December?

Here are my thoughts. I saw the show in early 2019 and I thought this film was brilliant. I also think James Corden did an amazing job. So much hate for him and for what? Obviously he could've had a better accent haha but I feel like just because some people don't like him, that is all they had in their heads the entire time. They didn't really get to pay attention to his performance. James captured everything perfectly. His raw emotions were so beautiful. People are saying he was offensive and I really don't see how he was. I am a gay man and I don't have a problem with straight actors playing gay roles. He did the role justice. People are also saying he "used a lisp to play gay"... now wtf does that even mean? 1) I have seen the movie a few times now and haven't heard a lisp at all. 2) I don't think he would use a lisp to play gay. cause wtf when has a lisp ever been connected to gay people? I just think some people want to make a problem out of everything and they are using The Prom to do that. Anyways, I loved it and I am so happy this story is being told!

People misunderstand how Barry is and what role he serves. He is suppose to be very flamboyant and stereotypically gay to contrast Emma and Alyssa and how they are normal and not the stereotype. Barry is so energy driven and flamboyant that when people saw James as that they called it offensive. While I know there are many better gay men to play it, they have to make money in some form and therefore have to have his well known name in the cast. They already had 4/8 leads as unknown Hollywood people (including Ariana, Jo Ellen, and yes, Andrew (theatre people are definitely not known as well as movie people)) and if they slapped a broadway gay actor that would add to unknown Hollywood or they could cast a well known gay but suffer on the singing in and for review and money purposes, they had to take the hit because James can sing and can act and is well known enough to be on the poster with the other actors. Movies have to make money and this was more of an economical one rather than they didn’t want to hire a gay person.

I understand wanting representation in actors, but for me James Corden’s performance was spectacular and he brought so much emotion into the roll, and I feel like he did an amazing job bringing the experiences of someone in that position to life on the screen even without having the real life experiences to take from. Everyone is entitled their own opinion, but for me the representation of those characters and situations being done well on screen are more impactful than someone who might not have been able to do it as well but may have had the representation off screen. Maybe if he hadn’t been as good as he was the need for someone who brings that reality would have been needed, but in my opinion as long as he was able to portray a realistic and emotionally impacting character, that trumps who he is out of character.

Seeing Emma as more, as you say "self assured & confident" in the film was definitely an intriguing change & fits for the character on that hand. But to me, what drew me to her (original cast way) was how she was struggling to keep holding on in a world that constantly dumps on her. & when she does get happy, when she's w/ Alyssa or bucking up the courage to say what she wants it feels more powerful to see her strength in fitting within those struggles. She's like us how we feel in low moments, but also like us to take that happy moment/surprise moment & just go w/ it. Jo Ellen NAILED Emma vocally & even in the characters lower moments (especially in Tonight Belongs to Us reprise), but Caitlin's is just going to resonate w/ me a bit more for sticking w/ the theme of building up that confidence & being positive throughout the show.

The only thing I have to add is that I interpreted Emma's character as more "smiley" anxious than confident, but interpretation is different for everyone. Idk, I think that interpreting her as smiling and nodding although it hurts (like she sings in just breathe) adds a layer of depth and character that really makes sense for JEPs performance and that most criticizers may not have thought about. the thing about james corden’s performance that made me uncomfortable it wasn’t much that he is a straight actor, it is the way acted felt like he was mocking gay people and this isn’t a problem with the character of Barry, Brooks Ashmaska(sp?) who originated the role had a wonderful heartfelt and honest performance, everything that james corden’s wasn’t.

Why Ryan Murphy tell the actress of Emma to smile during the break up!?!?!?

The Prom was really fun and cute. Specifically, Jo Ellen Pellman and Andrew Rannels shined! I’m really excited to see Ariana Debose’s Anita now. I do think Barry was horribly miscast. I have a lot friends from the LGBT+ community who were really upset by James Cordon’s casting. I love Meryl Steep and Michael Keegan Key, but I don’t think they had very good chemistry. Nicole Kidman was great, but I thought the character Angie was supposed to have more of a Elle Woods/Galinda energy. It was different than I expected - it doesn’t mean it was wrong. For me, the most distracting part was the lighting, costumes, and color scheme. They made the background and lighting the same color as people’s wardrobe in so many scenes, so they would blend in rather than stand out. For example, in the final scene, Barry’s and Emma’s outfits were the same color as the blue lighting in the background. Then, it would change to the same pink as Alyssa’s dress. It was like they were trying to use stage lighting for a movie, and I didn’t care for it. There was also so much spinning in the movie! Unruly Heart is a gorgeous song, but I couldn’t watch it because it was making me dizzy. But I cannot stress enough how magical Jo Ellen Pellman, Andrew Rannels and Ariana Debose were!!!

I have to agree about Ariana. She proved she can have strong vocals. But as Anita, she can prove herself as a true triple threat

I really enjoyed it and I haven’t seen the show but reading these comments I’m guessing there are some changes to the stage show which personally I LOVE. I love when they do this as it doesn’t overpower the stage show and still allows enough differences so people will still see the stage show and not just go off the film which I think gives both pros and cons to both film and theatre acting.I think this film was probably one of the best theatre to movie adaptations I have seen (don’t get me started on Les Mis...)

I also think the cast was PERFECT and they all did a great job at the rolls by creating an over the top but still realistic character to each individual 💜

Loved it. Was very emotional for me and made me want to know more about it and the broadway show. Movie cast interviews just made me love them all more. Insightful Regarding some of the casting questions and contributions from the Broadway cast to the actors. Also that they actually threw this All inclusive Prom to film it final day and invited teens from the community who maybe didnt get to attend their own or the way they wanted to. Just loved it.

I loved seeing emma appear confident since the beginning. I see it as a defense mechanism. Like she is in a rough path, with her parents and school and everything. She cannot rely on many people, so she needs to trust herself. It's kind of a fake it till you make it. I thought her confidence starts as a "facade" and as the movie goes, you can see how she is actually feeling it more and more. :)

I cried and really loved it!!! I think everyone did such a beautiful job and Meryl Streep NAILED it! I agree that it’s her best role, and I know it’s an underrated opinion but I think James Corden did a great job! And yes, the leads warmed my cold, dark soul and I fell in love with them immediately 😭

one of the things that stays in my mind when watching The Prom is how I would FREAK OUT if four Broadway stars entered my high school in the middle of a PTA meeting I NEED THIS

This movie has helped me come to terms with my own identity, big time. I think some of that may well be because of how, as you say, Emma is portrayed as more a little more self-assured and confident. It was refreshing. I've watched it 6 times since last weekend, it's like a big glittery comfort blanket. And if I'm brave enough to come out pretty soon, I'll owe a lot of that to this film.

Opinion From a Lesbian Who's Played Plenty of Straight Characters Before: As long as the role is played respectfully and you've done research into the character's struggles, it's alright to be straight playing a gay character. That is, as long as gay people are also getting straight roles. There just needs to be respect and a good execution! Also, I usually hate James Corden but I thought he did pretty good in this movie. I definitely like more upbeat and flamboyant Barry, but James did pretty good. Everyone else absolutely blew it out of the park, though. I liked it WAY more than I ever expected to. I already liked the show to begin with, but I wasn't expecting too much from the movie. Glad I ended up watching it, though!!

I haven’t seen the actual show so I went into it with not many expectations. I went out loving it and I teared up a few times. The characters all had a great share of screen time, I thought, and loved the character development. The songs were also amazing, and I sort of fell in love with Andrew Rannells. I thought Jo Ellen Pellman was amazing and played her character super well. I don’t know what else to say, but I really loved it. ALSO! I am a huge Swiftie and that “not a lot going on at the moment” comment that you made... I see what you did there in more than one way. 😉

I'm okay with Barry getting an ending. All the other 5 main characters get an ending (Alyssa/Emma get each other, Dee Dee finds love, Trent gets a job teaching, Angie gets the lead in Chicago). But Barry didn't get an ending in the play. I like that he gets closure like the rest of the leads.

I also loved Mery Streep here! I agree with everything that you said, including about James Corden. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Barry's Going to the Prom and I don't feel that James was able to express exactly what the character was feeling. But the truth is, I live in Argentina and it was amazing to have the possibility of seeing an adaptation of a Broadway show with which I was obsessed (I listened to the OBC recording incesantly). I watched it with my husband who knew nothing of this story and he also enjoyed it (even with me singing along and whooping after the musical numbers). This movie is pure joy, dancing in my living room, singing at the top of my lungs.

I feel really bad right now. A few days ago I was trying to convince one of my friend to watch the movie and she said she would but idk about it now. She is gay and hasn’t come out to her parents yet, but on Monday she came out to her guidance counselor over email and her parents are really strict and her parents see her email so she was forced to come out to her somewhat homophobic parents but I talked to her the other day and she said it didn’t go as bad as she thought it would which is good...

When I first watched The Prom I had a tough time getting into it because I wasn’t liking James Corden doing an American accent. Didn’t feel right. But the second time I watched it I fell madly in love with it, and have been ever since. The soundtrack just makes me so happy and makes me wish I could sing and act like all of them! I have watched it 4 times total now, and I’m still in love with it!
