The mark of an intellectually honest person is the degree to which they are willing to change their mind. Dr. Norton has a track record, as he has described here, of being amenable to emerging evidence. Its a refreshing thing to see in the health and fitness space. So often the health and fitness arena can devolve into dogmatic camps that refuse to concede any point to the other side, no matter well argued that point is. Layne's attitude is what we need to see more of. This is why his fan base is growing, even despite the fact that he may demolish many of their cherished beliefs. People who value intellectual honesty know Layne's intentions are noble.

I used to think the same about fasted cardio, and since changed my mind, just in terms of effectiveness. However I think there is still a benefit of fasted cardio in that, it can and does create a positive feedback loop for some folks. You're getting up first thing, putting some coffee on the Keurig and as soon as it's done you jump on the treadmill and put a podcast on. Doing that seems to boost overall compliance for some people. Just anecdotal tough.

Thank you for this great and honest update. I had a look at Dr. Tinsley paper on time restricted eating and resistance training because I am particularly interested by this subject. It should be noted that in this study the group assigned to TRE was eating on a 4H window and only the days they didn't perform resistance training. QUOTE: "On the 3 days per week that participants performed RT, they were allowed unrestricted food intake. On non-workout days (4days per week), participants were required to consume all calories in any four-hour window between 4 p.m. and midnight..." . As it is not what I was expecting to read I share it for those interested to the details and feasibility of TRE combined to RT on the same day.

Also as mentioned several other important factors: chronic inflammation without this risk is much lower and overall circulatory system health including blood pressure, heart health and level of plaque. I am genetically predisposed to borderline high LDL. My cardiologist did a suite of tests after blood work to see if I needed statins. As he said it’s easy for me to drop you LDL but this isn’t the point. He tested ergométrico, 24 hour ecg, ecocardiogram and very important ultrasound of arteries in the neck. Layne, admire your work. But the harm of HFCS is not in the weight gain, isn't it? You are talking about calorie per calorie, but Lustig confirms that too. It is not what he's saying, though, isn't it? It's the NAFLD, not weight reduction, where the harm per Lustig is, not in the subcu fat. Would you care to comment? I beat myself up for eating "too many" carbs (under 16 net grams/day!) because I refused to consider that maybe the stick of butter I was eating every day was the reason my weight was creeping up! I dont like the explanations I have heard on why fasted cardio does not work. The two reasons and my counterpoints: 1. You eat more after your fasted cardio so calories remain the same. -well not if I am restricting and counting my calories. 2. You do preferentially burn fat over carbs during fasted cardio, but your body then overcompensates by switching to a higher than normal usage of carbs for energy the rest of the day. -what if I am on a Keto diet?
@hamm0155
@hamm0155 Жыл бұрын
But if you're doing keto, why would it help other than as a way to restrict your calories? If you're eating the same total calories then why would it help? Are you wondering whether you would wind up feeling satisfied on fewer total calories for the week? I am not trying to argue that fasted cardio is bad, just for clarity.
@dklawiter
@dklawiter Жыл бұрын
1. fasted cardio burns the same amount of total calories as fed cardio, so if your counting calories and eating the same amount each day, fed cardio one day, and fasted the next, does not matter. 2. burning fat vs carbs, during or after the cardio, doesn't matter, calories are king, your body will burn whichever fuel source you give it and store any extra calories as needed to maintain equilibrium. What you really need to watch for is a subconscious decrease in NEAT. This can throw of your calculations and should be accounted for.
@cherryl225

you're overthinking this one, namely point 2. the point is that your energy usage will pan out the same no matter if you do fasted or fed cardio, carb or dietary fat.

Layne, see if I recall correctly, it's statistically demonstrated that those taking statins only have marginal survival rate over those that haven't taken statins to lower their high LDL. What does this mean? Well, we know statins lower LDL , and so if LDL were truely the culprit to poor heart health we'd expect better results from taking statins but we don't. I think I heard this from your mentor Dr. Laymon. You should really talk to him. Maybe interview him and respectfully bash these discrepancies out. It would make for good content.

Layne, I'm not sold on particle size not being important in heart health. For starters, the fact that studies show more exposure to LDL ends in poorer heart health doesn't disprove particle size being at fault , considering it could just suggest since there's more LDL there's just more large size particles, so of course there'd be a correlation. But a correlation doesn't mean causation. Adding to the confusion, one could have high LDL but not high particle size, so this needs to be fetered out. Besides according to your mentor Dr. Laymon, excess carbs via triglyceride levels pose a higher heart risk that that of high cholesterol, yet this isn't tackled by the medical industry because doctors think Gen Pop don't have self control, and there's no medication to sell patients to lower triglycerides.

I watched some of the video. Maybe evidence re CHO vs fats vs keto vs fasting applies differently to different population groups with different objectives and needs. Fungs data re role of fasting ketosis (and re talks of fasting predominantly rather than preference of avoid CHO) is relevant to diabetics, the morbidly obese in terms of weight loss. As with Michael Mosely and his 1200 CHO VLCD diet, it seems that they are presenting data on weight loss regimens that seem to be achievable and doable. The question of how to alter diet in those that already are relatively healthy maybe is not the group Fung is particularly relevant too.

Every weight loss question gets different wording like this fasted cardio... answer always come to calories in and energy used. One formula. High fructose corn syrup follows same calorie rule for weight loss.. anything processed you might look fine eating in terms of body composition, but has horrible effects internally. Like smoking cigs might make you lose weight.. losing weight healthy. Cigs are healthy then. Some ppl using this same logic for fat loss. Cigs increase cancer risk. High fructose corn syrup/anything highly processed is the same.

John meadows RIP, he spoke that he believed in EAAs, and intra workout nutrition. I do feel I’m in the best shape of my life at 36, although I’ve been the most consistent I’ve ever been, although I do intraworkout shakes, basically soo my drink the entire workout, has sugar, EEAs, creatine, a pump supplement as well. I take a few bigger sips at the start of my workout and then sip it slower or faster based on how far I am in my training along with how much of my shake is left.

my intution tells me Layne, Peter Attia, Andrew Huberman, Rhonda Patrick and a select other few greats are the only ones to actually come out and say "hey, I got this wrong" and have ZERO problem with doing so

In regards to fasted cardio; for those of us using TRE, our eating windows don't really change; I'm about 6 hours between my two meals.
