Finally, some appreciation for "The wind rises"! I've seen all Ghibli movies, some multiple times and this one is my favourite, at least story wise. I get that it won't resonate with everybody but I think it perfectly represents the feeling of just loving to create and the clash between dreamy world of creativity, harsh reality and compromises of creating as your job. It's always sad to see people saying it's just okay, so it's really nice to see someone giving it some love.

So many are saying Euphoria S2 so far “doesn’t know what it’s doing” … I think they do for the most part, but Kat’s arc is pretty useless. Lex is given more to do this season, I hope the potential isn’t wasted. I just want it to wrap up nicely and builds up enough for a 3rd season.
@RED01SEA
@RED01SEA 2 жыл бұрын
true that kat arc isn't going anywhere but man she has the best sequence ever it was great to watch , also i dont know but i'm starting to think they are making rue and jules sidecharacters way too much , and rue arc is getting weird , borderline unlikeble , jules is barely in this series anymore and she has nothing to do too , i think it was a mistake that they ended last season with the breakup because the reunion was not good and felt rushed , also too much sex scenes and nudety way too much , Sydney character is just there to be used as fanservice if you know what i mean . i like the season so far , music and videos are amazing
@calandula2007
@calandula2007 2 жыл бұрын
It's funny because I really thought that the ending sequence of S1 was a metaphorical way of expressing that Rue was dying instead of "just" relapsing and I would have loved the idea to end the series there or build the second season upon that. But tbh S2 is still excellent and I think that now, after the mid season episode all is going to a closing for all characters, is just than maybe the ones that they are focusing on deserves a little more attention, but I understand people wanting a more equality on stories.
@calandula2007
@calandula2007 2 жыл бұрын
@@RED01SEA I don't really think that Sydney's character is just for fanservice. Mainly because thats related to one of the internal issues of the character, she wants to be accepted by Nate and by people in general, the show lets us know by her flashback that people around looked at her as the big breasted porn girl that attracts a lot of men. Mainly her arc is about sexualization and self esteem. However I agree with you that the whole Rue arc is getting a little bit annoying and Jules is acting pretty weirdly.
@JordanNMusic
@JordanNMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@calandula2007 what I find interesting is that there’s arcs people like…and arcs people don’t. With a show like this that’s bound to happen. Tbh…I think Euphoria, had it been a 1 Season miniseries everyone would love it. Now that we’re in a 2nd season, I see so many split opinions. As much I still enjoy the show; maybe it should end at a season 3-4. Stretching out a story like this would overdue it but that’s me.

As it happens I recently saw several of these -- Star Wars last night, Sweetie and The Player a few weeks ago. I love Sweetie, though I understand why you didn't connect with it. I've always had the feeling with Jane Campion movies that you're not exactly supposed to connect with the characters the way one normally does when watching movies. I don't know how to describe it, but I have the feeling that she DOES want to create a connection, but through a skewed angle. Her characters simultaneously seem well-developed, but also appear as if being examined under a microscope -- objectively and without emotion. (No, that's not the right way to describe it ... she's doing something all her own, but I don't know what it is.) Whatever it is that she uniquely does was much more obvious in her early films, but I felt it even in The Power of the Dog. I also recently watched An Angel at My Table -- I absolutely adored it. In that one she certainly engages the emotions more directly, but without sacrificing her alien way of seeing the world.

Found what you said about The Wind Rises to be really interesting as an animator. I love that film but honestly thought the animation was a lot weaker than most of the other Ghibli films. Maybe I’m just too biased against computer-made animation but a lot of the people ( one of the things you praised ) in crowds were quite awkwardly animated in my opinion, and some of the main character’s movements feel in they’re in a nasty place between analog and digital techniques. Great film regardless though, I was just surprised you’d place it above Princess Mononoke, Castle of Cagliostro, Ponyo, etc.

I watched First Reformed last night for the first time, it really wasn't what I expected, it really takes that turn partway through. Pretty dark, maybe a bit too overly morbid. I thought some characters were definitely more cartoonish than the rest, but that's fine since they were relegated to the sidelines. Trying to make sense of that ending. Is the movie about zealotry, finding hope in darkness? Probably both. I thought it was really good, but I probably won't watch it again just because of how sad it was for me.

You should check out Isao Takahata's other Studio Ghibli films. Only Yesterday and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya are very beautiful and human films that really let their characters live on the screen.

The First Reformed > The Red Shoes > All That Jazz > Barb and Star progression had me full vince mcmahon meme. All That Jazz is so so so good. It was one of my favorite movies for years until the Fosse/Verdon series came out and there was a scene where Fosse’s daughter gets upset watching Roy Scheider and the ATJ daughter rehearse their heart-to-heart dance scene. IIRC she was upset because it was twisting what actually happened and made it seem overly saccharine. I found it so interesting - that this autobiographical movie I had always assumed to be so raw and open could still have some blind spots and biases in it because of course it would. Anyways, after watching that I actually love it more now.

I watched Insomnia & One Hour Photo (rip R.W.), Network (however much they paid Peter Finch, and Faye Dunaway it wasnt enough), and finally got around to watching Promising Young Woman. Carey Mulligan was fucking great.

Karsten if you think Grave of the Fireflies is impactful, you must watch "In this Corner of the World"! I would love to hear your opinion on it.

I think euphoria’s 2nd season is leaps and bounds ahead of season 1, cal’s cold intro in episode 3 is one of the saddest things I’ve watched recently
