i'd argue that you're not supposed to like either character in the before trilogy. they're purposefully introduced as flawed in the beginning, and by the end, they're the same flawed characters, just lacking the veil of love and infatuation that idealized their reality
@iPyroNigma
@iPyroNigma 3 жыл бұрын
The Before series is my favourite trilogy in history. The idea of love being nothing but a thin veil of falsehoods is quite true, and by the end, you need to decide whether the flaws were counted in that love or hidden away. Also, it supports my view of marriage.

I agree. She also felt kinda unfair to him and got into defensive instead of talking through things. Both are flawed, but they end up beeing ok and reflecting on their mistakes at the end. For me its my favourite of the trilogy because I love the discusions, how they are arguing over a misunderstanding. It reminds me of real arguments, when both people are kinda right in a way

on before midnight, i personally think that in many ways, céline is just as manipulative as jesse. and these tensions between them are visible in both before sunrise and before sunset. the little misunderstandings and conflicts that are largely brushed off. what i feel as though before midnight does better is to rationalize the idea of romantic love. getting off a train to explore vienna for a night with someone is romantic. reconnecting after years and believing there's a chance is romantic. staying through the mundane aspects of life is not. between sunrise and sunset, each character had a chance to develop fantasies about what could have been, and what is can't compare. they both have to reckon with the decisions made by their younger, more romantic selves. céline has to learn to help jesse deal with his feelings of guilt from abandoning his son and jesse has to help céline feel more supported in her career ambitions.

2 years later response, and I couldn’t agree more. I never saw Jesse being this abusive/manipulative guy, but a deeply flawed human who’s in a relationship that isn’t as romantic and glamorous as his younger self was in. And if that isn’t human I don’t know what is. I get watching the trilogy and acknowledging these characters flaws, but I don’t think there’s a “point” to these flaws as if the ending of Before Midnight is saying, “Sometimes love is manipulative”

Listen, I’m a 16 year old so I don’t have any better takes on marriage and life than you do. But for me, I feel like Before Midnight is a super realistic and profound installment in the trilogy, despite it being the least enjoyable. I feel like people are more like Jessie and Celine than they admit. I don’t see the movie trying to prove how they shouldn’t be together, I see it as their relationship going through a slump and a realization that they have serious work to do to fix it (whether it works out or not). Don’t get me wrong, Jessie is a huuuuge asshole and I don’t like who he is in the movie at all. But I also imagine that those fights are frighteningly common in marriages with good people, and rather than “manipulation winning” in the end, I think it’s more about them recognizing the genuine love they felt for each other in the beginning and agreeing that they’re going to give attempting to return to that love another shot. Those are just my thoughts, though.

Honestly I thought both of them were pretty flawed in the movie. Sometimes it’s kind of hard to ignore the fact that you’ve got a kid across the world that you never see and your wife just expects you to forget about it. That would turn anyone into a bit of a melodramatic wreck. But it doesn’t mean you need to document everything with your wife into a series of novels and make her a celebrity of sex appeal just because you like the idea of having another best seller. They both have heavy downs in the film but maybe I just need to watch it again

I loved Before midnight on a rewatch. I understand the frustration with the ending but I think it worked for me. There's a sense of ambiguity, while still giving it a sweet ending that has a dark undertone. I didn't like the movie at first but I came to the realization that it's trying to get under the skin of a relationship and when there's a sweet ending like there was to this one, it left something like, "there's gonna be more arguments, there's gonna be more deception". It kind of reminds me of the ending to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Idk. That's my take. Maybe I'm not thinking "deep" enough.

yeah. i didn't really like it upon first viewing either but after i pondered it, i realized that you're kind of not supposed to?? like linklater deceived you into rooting for the idealistic version of the couple, but the last film abruptly shatters that illusion and you're met with an almost rude awakening
@eadlynjune
@eadlynjune 3 жыл бұрын
To me the point was "there will be more fighting, there will be more mistakes, but that does not mean they hate each other and it doesn't mean the end of their relationship." To me that's not positive or negative inherently it just...is. I'm of the opinion very few love stories exist in real life where one party hasn't majorly fucked up and to me this was their moment. Then again I don't have most optimistic view of long term relationships so thats contributing to how I feel though based on interviews I think Linklatter would agree with me.

SO agreed with everything about Mysterious Skin!! I think what makes it so impactful is definitely that fine balance between the brutality of the subject matter and the tenderness with which the characters are handled. It doesn't pain Neal or Brian as perfect angels by any stretch, nor does it make the story completely about the trauma that happened to them - it just allows them to be real, and deeply impacted by the trauma in ways they don't even realize, and that's what makes you care about them so much long after the move ends. I also think it's the lack of closure that keeps it living so rent free in my head. Like.. I don't necessarily think it needs a full sequel, but I don't think I've ever yearned for SOME kind of continuation of as story as much as I do with Mysterious Skin. Because it ends before we really get to see any healing, and that's so deeply painful. I suppose for Brian he somewhat starts that process, but Neal... boy needs SO SO much help working through all that trauma, and I need to know he gets it, and the story doesn't give us that

Scenes From A Marriage miniseries is phenomenal! It’d be hard to watch all of the episodes back to back (I broke it up into 2 nights), but it’s super well paced for how much dialogue it is.

In Before Midnight I think an argument could be made for both sides. I think he most likely is not giving her the love she needs and she’s giving him unreal expectations with how he will spend time with his kids on different sides of the world. It’s been a little since I’ve watch that one but I’ve seen it probably 3 times.

i love watching these monthly videos. i work in a video shop and have been in and out of film school since i was 19 (omw to get that degree eventually?). these videos tend to pretty consistently follow what i've been watching as a dedicated movie buff, and add depth to films that are already in my watchlist, which fuckng rules. i don't like to interact and comment too much, but i've had a few beers too many and felt up to leaving my thoughts like some drunk dumbass. so ya. that's all.

Really glad to see someone else delving into Arakis work. He's such an interesting director and "The Doom Generation" is easily one of my favorite movies and I even bought the unrated director's cut just so I could see the cut scenes. His movies are just seeped in aesthetics and Gen X synesism without the hindsight we have today on the 90s. I also love his weird distortion of reality that makes me think of Baz Luhrmann but if he was having a really bad trip.

i’m honestly not that sure why i watch these videos. i never know what films he’s talking about nor do i really have a drive to watch them. i’ve been watching karsten for years knowing damn well i’ll never be half as interested in films as he is but i still watch almost all his videos. i just really appreciate that he finds such joy in talking about films.

Karsten, I'm also pretty young, but I think Before Midnight makes it pretty clear that Celine is too intelligent and independent to let herself be manipulated. Particularly in the final scene, what Jesse is doing is not manipulation, but a hail mary and a last attempt at negotiation. Celine doesn't give in because anybody is making her, she gives in because at the end of the day she agrees that what they have is as close as possible to true love. Like you said, the film would not be doing its duty if it didn't portray lifelong marriage as an incredibly flawed arrangement. Both of the characters have their doubts and their insecurities, as every human will, but that isn't enough of a reason to give up on their best chance at happiness. Celine realizes in the end that it is better to have faith in what she loves, than to punish herself and her husband because of problems neither of them can properly solve.

Totally agree on Before Midnight, I don't think any ending would actually be good because of what was built up to that point, but yep it could have been better or at least not passing gaslighting as acceptable and normal (one thing is pointing that it exists/existed in the relationship, another is claiming their togetherness depends on it as if it was nice instead of sad).

Huh. I really didn't know the Coen Brothers directed 'O Brother Where Art Thou'. Or if i did I totally forgot that they did lol. That's one of my favorite comedies ever really. Also, Mysterious Skin is a phenomenal movie. I stumbled upon and started it with exactly zero knowledge/expectations as to what the movie was. It's very very uncomfortable to watch and at times SUUUUPER difficult to get through, but i loved it. Not one I'll be going back to over and over to watch because of how difficult it is in some parts, but I would absolve recommend it to any movie/story lover. Definitely wouldnt recommend it to a casual fan of film at all though hahah. Thanks for the video. Im a new subscriber, so I'm very excited to start going through your catalog.
