Thank you for this. I wonder if suicidality was more openly talked about without judgment, maybe I would think about it less inside my own head every day.

Only cure is to prevent it, not bring any more children into this world. Life is guaranteed suffering, just different amounts for different individuals.

I was going to a psychologist, and I told this person I was suicidal and I had a plan and I had suicidal ideation for years off and on. Was not taken seriously. Also asked this same person for more support as going to therapy once a week or once every two weeks was not enough as I have minimal support in real life. I have avoidant personality disorder so it is extremely difficult for me to trust people and to feel as good as others to socialize. No help or suggestions. Wanted a partial hospitalization for more support and still no help. Tried to get admitted inpatient but was told I needed to go to an emergency room to be admitted and there was no guarantee even then. I essentially had to attempt suicide to be admitted inpatient anywhere. I have tried many medications and classes of psych medications and could never take them due to very bad side effects. I feel very let down by the mental health system even in the United States.

My nephew committed suicide last year. I suspected he was suicidal and as much as I tried and literally hundreds of hours of conversations and trying to help, nothing worked. Please don’t harm yourself. I see how devastated and guilty the entire family feels. He was so loved. May he rest in peace. I still talk to him every day. I believe he is still with me.

Same. One year in and nothing is better (and yes I’m in therapy, on meds, go to groups). Chronic pain/illness plays a huge role. And a shitty childhood…

This shows the importance of a good support system. Also I am glad you mention suicide as a chronic condition that you will live with and always need treatment for, especially ideation, it does not magically "go away."

When someone is suicidal and you can help them one, two, many times but then he/she tries again and again until unfortunately dies. Why to prolong their pain and suffering. How we balance that, the desire we have for her/him to live but he/she doesn’t want to?? 😭😭😭

I'm not a mental health professional, but I can offer some general insights that might help me understand this complex and deeply personal issue. It's crucial to consult with mental health experts if you or someone you know is dealing with this situation. 1. Understanding the Desire to Help: Most of us naturally want to help others, mainly if we see them suffering. This desire often extends to preserving life, even when the person doesn't want to live. 2. Recognizing Their Autonomy: Conversely, each person has their own life, feelings, thoughts, and experiences contributing to their mental state. Their autonomy and wishes should be respected, though it's a delicate balance when someone is in a crisis. 3. Exploring Underlying Issues: Often, suicidal thoughts stem from underlying issues that might be treatable or manageable with the right support. This could include mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, or other conditions influencing their thoughts and feelings. Various forms of trauma, often from childhood, can bring about such feelings. It’s not as important to recognize the exact issue but to recognize and accept its presence. 4. Seeking Professional Help: Therapists and mental health professionals are trained to understand the complexities of these situations and can offer targeted support, therapy, and intervention. However, they are only as good for a person at a given time. Even an excellent therapist for one may be the worst one for you or your loved one and vice versa. 5. Self-Care for Caregivers: Supporting someone in a situation like this is incredibly taxing emotionally. It's crucial to recognize the impact it can have on you and seek support for yourself as well. 6. Accepting Limitations: We must recognize that we can't control other people's actions or choices. We can do our best to support them, but we may need help to change the outcome. This is a complex issue with no simple answers. Balancing respect for an individual's autonomy and feelings with our natural desire to help and prevent harm is a delicate task that is best navigated with the guidance and support of mental health professionals.

Imagine the daughter's story but without a father and without Boston. That's the story of my life. It was passed down to me and sadly I passed it to one of my children. There is no help for me and there is no help for my child. We live not knowing which day will be the one that breaks the camel's back. At least we can put men on the moon and swallow tiny cameras. Lots of pretend help out there including doctors and organizations which have no idea how to help and make matters worse until we give up as my cold and I have finally understood that we are on it own.

I feel this. Many people have mental illness inherited from their parents, so hence there’s no help/support to be had from those parents when they get ill too. And then the cycle continues to ruin lives. My own parents are very aware I want to die but they don’t have the emotional resources/ability to help. I just wish they hadn’t had a child in the first place. We definitely are mostly alone, except for the random hotlines and support groups that offer temporary support, but no actual change.

Big issue here.Very well discussed guys. Its become more prevalent in modern society.Talking about it is the key to bringing in solutions for the Poor Dear souls who need it.We carry around much emotional baggage and we need people like this to be an advocate for help and prevention. This one really got to me. Many thanks.

This is so ironic. Traditional Judaism forbids suicide. Interesting that they didn't really touch on this in the video. I know a good number of young Jewish adults who view their childhoods as abusive and cultlike, and don't want to continue practicing, but know they'll be disowned if they do. I also know gay Jews who are suicidal because their Jewish families will never accpept them.

Don’t wait for a suicidal person to make a call to hotline like “focus on the family” Schedule call yourself and let them know that a professional will be calling them. It’s super super important to connect a person In crisis to all the people who might/can help be it professional ir personal.

I have stayed in Israel and had to say mental trauma is a daily occurrance there. The political turbulence and generational psychological trauma are carried on. Depression normally preceeds suicidal thoughts and tendencies. Some depressive symptoms are seen in Bipolar, Schizophrenia and maniac depression, etc. Mental illness triggers suicidal attempts. Precautions are on the carers side, but not easy at all. You cannot monitor the person 24/7.
