Thank You Very Much Randy, the content is very informative. I am a fourth-year undergrad student majoring in chemistry, at first I liked chemistry during my times in high school, however as I went deeper into my major, I found that chemistry is a very complicated subject that requires you to not only good at chemistry but also at physics and Math, and I think that my major is too theoretical. That's why I am planning to apply for Environmental engineering in graduate school. At first, I was pessimistic in applying for the enve eng master degree, but watching your videos gave me an insight and courage to keep on moving. Thank You so much.

Thank you so much for posting this. Sometimes it’s incredibly intimidating when I feel like I’m too average to handle these classes. It genuinely feels like I’m in over my head because I’m just struggling with college biology classes right now, but knowing that it’s much simpler than it seems is very reassuring. I feel better about being an average student now 🥲 Especially since covid began. Online classes make me feel like a complete idiot 😂 I need to get back on track. This previous year has really been a wrench in the gears.

I definitely thought the same way too as a student. I thought working in the real world would be scary and that "adulting" should be impossibly difficult. But honestly, college and dealing with the everyday stress of life while handling school is more difficult and stressful than actual work. School just makes it more difficult than it should be. I feel incredibly bad for students during COVID. I don't know how I'd handle online classes, unemployment, social anxiety, and the job market with all this happening.

@@RandyLy It is overwhelming right now but I believe that everyone should try picking themselves back up a little bit at a time until we get back into the swing of things. So many people haven’t even left their homes in a year. I’m so thankful for these vaccines that are gaining back some sense of control. I just keep reminding myself that the finish line only looks like it’s a million miles away because I’m taking my time but once I reach that goal it will have all been worth it. We all just have to figure it out a little bit at a time and keep that mindset as positive as possible. No matter how crappy things seem to be at times, we have the power to contribute to the health of humanity and the environment. That kind of goal surely sparks plenty of motivation. No matter how average or useless we feel, a degree in science (or medicine) is always a very influential contribution to the wellbeing of mankind’s future and that’s my favorite way to think about it.

@RandyLy4 жыл бұрын
It was a big fear of mine too especially during the interview process, but you can turn the tables a little bit by asking your employers something like, “when you were entering this field, did you have all the relative knowledge going in or did you have someone mentor you along the way, or was there a big learning curve, or are you teachable/coachable?” That puts them on the spot too and also brings them back down to earth, knowing full well that even experienced hiring managers were once at your level.

If someone wanted to work on experimental projects that revolved around environmental science/engineering, what kind of job path would you recommend (excluding being a professor). Like for example, I always thought it would be cool to test something out like spraying white rot fungi spores on incoming landfill waste to help the woody/cardboard/paper/food materials break down faster, thus reducing landfill volume and preventing methane emissions. But I have no idea if it would really work and I'm too far in my master's program to start a big project like that... Have you heard of companies that hire environmental engineers/scientists to spend a portion of their time researching innovative sustainability techniques?

Initially, every job will require fast learning once you start. There are some days that are the same while others are random and spontaneous. I do prefer spontaneous days because most days are boring. They don't teach you how to deal with spontaneous days, so it's OK to just react accordingly with your best judgment of the situation. I learn slow too but after showing me something like at least 3x; you should get the hang of things.

Environmental studies is still similar enough to env engineering. You can implement your ideas if you do research at a university or work at an R&D company. Unfortunately, there aren't that many R&D companies, so your best bet would be to go in academia and find some project there. I don't think you'll need to take class,; you'll just need to find someone who has a project for you that incorporates both the environment/biology.

I do not give out advice on specific courses or universities because that research is very specific to the individual. There is no one “best” school out there because many schools may offer the program, and the experience will largely depend on how you make it. The course requirements all depend on the program. Everyone needs to do their own due diligence in their school of interest. You should consider factors like tuition costs, time required to graduate, family obligations/responsibilities, and whether or not you can endure graduate school.

You don’t need to know everyone personally and be best buddies; you just need to feel comfortable talking on the phone professionally or just understand that people have different personalities

I am under graduate student in renewable energy and environmental engineering student and I am confused between this two fields,which field is better renewable or environmental. M.tech in environmental engineering is good choice for me or not? Pls ans
@RandyLy3 жыл бұрын
Some universities just throw out different majors but both are pretty relatable. I don't think there is a better field since you will be learning nearly the same concepts and striving to do better in preserving the environment.

Can environmental engineers invent some kind of product which people can use to save the environment
@RandyLy2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and you don’t need to work for a company to do that. If you’re creative enough and have the resources, you can do that at home.

Wait I’m confused because I thought a degree was supposed to give you the knowledge required to excel at a job - so then like, does that mean that ANYONE could theoretically be an environmental engineer because the actual job doesn’t require the stuff you learn in an environmental engineering degree? So like, someone who studied a completely unrelated field is just as capable of the job as someone who did environmental engineering? Or someone who didn’t even go to uni is equally qualified as someone who DID do an environmental engineering degree? This is so confusing… so all your degree is is a piece of paper but it doesn’t prepare you for anything? (Then what’s the point for getting it - merely to qualify you to practice in the field, without ACTUALLY qualifying you to practice in the field?) Just to get your foot in the door even tho you’re no more capable of the job than someone without an environmental engineering degree?
@RandyLy2 жыл бұрын
All great questions and the answer will depend on your employer and responsibilities. 1) Can anyone theoretically be an environmental engineer? Yes, depending on the responsibilities. My role is towards compliance and not towards design/construction. My university degree did not prepare me for compliance-related tasks, but I did have the degree that says I graduated with environmental engineering and the job title was aimed for environmental engineers. The employer took a chance with me because I had no prior compliance experience, but I learned on the job. Being open-minded and flexible is a requirement. 2) Can someone who studied a completely unrelated field be just as capable of the job as someone who did environmental engineering? Yes. My coworker who had a different job title but basically performed the same tasks had a Bachelors in Asian studies and last worked at Home Depot. But she was just as professional and can perform the same tasks as me. Do I think it's fair? Not really, but this just proves that experience and connections can go a long way and is practically equal to getting a Masters degree. 3) Is a degree just a piece of paper that doesn’t prepare you for anything? Sort of. Imagine if you only studied in school and had the highest GPA, but had no people skills, internships, or work experience. That shows that you can do well on paper tests and in a classroom setting, but not actually thrive in the real-world environment.

Bro I am RK from India 🇮🇳 can I do bachelors in engineering physics and then do some great work for our environment by doing masters in environmental engineering or something related.
@RandyLy4 жыл бұрын
I don't know of any engineering physics major so I can't say. I wouldn't complicate the majors and just go straight for whatever field you're interested in

I passed 12th and very confused about doing bachelor in biotech and then master in env engg Or do both bachelor and master in env eng.I am very passionate about waste management and taking current situation of my country Nepal these fields do not have much scope and no one is caring about waste and pollution much..What should i go for please suggest me sir 🙏

I understand your frustration in what you should choose but ultimately; I cannot decide that for you. I don’t want to be blamed if ever you are unhappy with a decision I advise you. That being said, I think getting a bachelors and Masters in Env Eng is redundant and unnecessary. You'll want to be flexible and versatile, so if I were in your situation; I'd go for biotech and env eng because you might enjoy one more than the other.

Dude you missed the whole point of the experience. So u want to take shortcuts and just use a program instead of learning. Nobody should learn division then since we can just use a calculator.
@RandyLy4 жыл бұрын
To understand the basic concepts, yes you should learn from the bottom up. But once you get into like differential equations or larger problems, no one has time to start from scratch. You need computer software to solve it
