I worked as a vending technician and installation expert in the MD/DC metropolitan area for 16yrs. Most of this guy's information is on point. For example, his points about service calls for broken machine issues is on point. I mean, I worked for a company that paid me a full salary just to drive around all day fixing their machines. So yeah, having a working knowledge of how each machine works (models are all different even within the same brand such as Dixie Narco) is key. If you don't know how to fix a machine or someone that can, you're screwed. I used to do calls for other companies that had no service tech and got a min of $50/hr to fix their stuff. The other issues are: Machines are heavy and if you do not have the proper truck (with lock-down slots for moving straps) and lift, dollies (like safe dollies), and other people to help you move the machine in and out of buildings, down hallways, around corners, and on and off the truck, you cant install or remove the machine. Finally, the profit margin is very small. We are talking like less than 4% for a decent size operation. Finally, you have to have a bunch of extra money. Why? Because you need bill validators and coin changers. Not all machines come with those and these pieces of equip. are expensive. Plus, you need coins to fill your coin changers otherwise your machine won't work. You could easily need over $100 in coins in each machine just to get it in operational status. No coins in the changer = no working machine because it will automatically shut itself down because it cant make proper change on sales. This doesn't even mention the fact that in today's world of technology, people want to use credit cards and phones to pay for stuff. Once you start talking about cashless systems that is another ball of wax. You will have to invest in credit card and phone readers and telemetry units and pay a company monthly to collect your digital currency. I left the vending business in 2017 because it is dying.

My time in the vending business was as a route driver for vending companies. I enjoyed the work tremendously and looked forward to going to work every day. I used to fill vending machines in my dreams while sleeping. On the right route, with enough hard work and hustle, the weekly pay can be fantastic. My take-home pay in the early 2000's used to be $850 to $950 per week. I was lucky to get routes that had steady weekly income instead of some routes where the pay fluctuated a lot due to seasonality or whatever. I only left the vending business because I got injured in a truck crash. I should have gone back after I recovered but didn't. The years I was in the business, prices from vending machines were very reasonable -- 65 cent candy bars, 50 cent bags of chips, 75 cent cans of soda, 50 cent cartons of milk, fresh sandwiches for $2.50 and fresh bagels for 70 cents. Today, the prices of vending machines are so high as to be embarrassing -- I would be ashamed of trying to peddle candy bars for $1.50 and bottled drinks for $2.50. I was in the business long enough to know how to do all the minor fixes and repairs myself, so any vending mechanics that covered my route loved me -- I only ever called in serious service calls. I was so good at filling machines that customer refund requests were less than $2.00 a week for my entire route and because of this, my company never lost an account because I did a poor job and actually was successful at signing many major locations to 5 year contracts instead of 1 or 2 year agreements. I was NOT the best vending route driver out there -- I broke many company rules and was regularly in trouble. But, most of my rule breaking was overlooked since the amount of money I brought in each week only increased month to month. On my last route, I was consistently the second most profitable driver out of over 60 other route drivers at that company location. The trend now is instead of banks of 10 or 12 vending machines, is called Micro-markets with products in unlocked coolers and open shelves full of products and one single payment kiosk that collects the money due all at one time. This means customers only have to make ONE payment after selecting their products and it means no more separate machines with their own coin mechs and bill acceptors to keep in working order. So, it's a better shopping experience for customers, but it all comes at higher prices for products (to cover shrinkage and theft). And if that ONE payment kiosk fails, nobody can buy anything.

There is no way to lose with vending when your location is thriving and you have the right merchandise retailer. There no way to avoid profit. I have a snack shop without the machines in a thriving location. candy bars, chips, sodas (bottles/cans), pickles, cookies (oreos vanilla/chocolate, famous amos chocolate chip) other candy. There's big profit in this business. Like I said, having the right location and the right discount retailer. You can't lose.

The ways to improve vending machine sales is to place them in areas that make your products easily accessible to the people who need them. Since the newest machines will offer use of Apple Pay and Android Pay, all you need to have is your phone, or just your credit/debit card. Another consideration when looking for ways to improve vending machine sales is to place them in areas that make your products easily accessible to the people who need them. Schools, malls, airport lounges, bus stations and subway platforms are high traffic areas that are prime locations for vending machines.

You need to plan ahead of time. You need to put in a lot of work and a lot of money into it. You need to keep reinvesting that money back into the business. Pay attention to important things that you need. Like a dolly, a trailer, a storage shed, inventory, maintenance and taxes. I’d say, you need to have about 35 machines to make good money on this vending machine business. Watch out with how you spend your money. Don’t be stupid and blow all your money. Think of your business expenses ahead of time. Invest in a credit card readers/POS system with real time alerts. You’re not going to get super rich fast but you have a potential chance to make a good amount of money. You have to play it smart and be patient. It could take 3-5 years to see your business expand and finally start spitting out profit.

A couple of things never lay a soda machine on its side or back to deliver it deliver it upright if you don’t have a pickup with a lift or sides rent one or hire professional vending machine movers to do the back breaking job! Also make sure that they are insured because there will be accidents such as gouged walls or messed up carpeting or wood flooring. If you can’t afford movers and have to deliver it laying down make sure you don’t plug the machine in until it stands upright as long as it was on its side this allows the refrigerant and oil to settle back you don’t want the oil and the refrigerant to mix! Never deliver a machine of any kind fully or even partially loaded you are asking for trouble especially with a soda machine! I’m taking from experience of 30+ years of working for Green and White and Red White and Blue and self employed with snack route!

The reason people in vending machine business don't make consistent money is because they sell too much junk food. Why not give customers more value, like Kinder Bueno, and Kit Kat chocolate, Hazelunt chocolate, or even Ramen soup, the dried ramen soup ! you know items that make more sense to the taste buds. Also, did you know there's other types of vending machines like Burrito Box that sells..burritos ?

Question how do Vending machine businesses pay other people to restock and collect money from Machines while trusting that they won’t steal any?
@iamthestig14 жыл бұрын
What you should do is rent the machines out. So what you do is you rent out machines to the council, for example, and charge roughly £200/month rental on the machine. You could do a stocked package, where the machine is stocked, or you could do a machine only package where you only supply and service the machine, and the client supplies the stock.

Something that I'd like to note, as I just started my vending business and got my first location last weekend. I don't have a business license, just like he said in the video, because I have no idea if this will grow enough to make it worth it; before you get a license, first, you have to register an LLC. This isn't super cheap. Then you need the business license. And then after that, you'll probably need a vendor's license as well either through your state, your county, or the city you plan to place the machine(s) in. Then insurance as well. And if you're doing full line vending, you'll probably need a food service license. This all adds up to a lot, and many of them need renewed yearly, too. Like he said, don't do it until you have a good number of locations and you know this is what you want to do. BUT DEFINITELY DO PAY YOUR TAXES REGARDLESS! Don't mess with the IRS. It's one thing to get caught without the proper paperwork to run a vending business, and first offense is likely to be a slap on the wrist and worst case a small fine (which is unlikely). Mess with the IRS though and you could find yourself in jail. So definitely do NOT skip out on paying your taxes.

I made a lot of mistakes in buying used pop machines. I got two off the internet and they were 15 years old or more and pure junk. I got another three from a vending repair shop, they were about 10 years old and they weren't much better. I got my first pop machine from a vending machine distributor witch turned out to be my best investment. Of course it was under 5 years old . if I had to do it all over again, I would only buy new machines. Remember when you are buying a used machine, Someone is selling that machine for a reason. Good luck to all.

I was in the vending machine business for many years with 2 different companies. We had thousands of soda machines in the field that ranged from brand new to 40 years old. Working for a vending company means there are dedicated mechanics to repair the machines and those guys can keep your 40 year old machine working great. Some of my favorite machines were the older ones that had higher capacity but fewer selections -- like the ones with a giant 6 x 6 inch Coke Button and five other smaller buttons. By far, the best modern machines (since 1990) are Dixie-Narco. Any other brand of machine is crap, in my opinion. I will be happy to have a Vendo machine from 1986 but not one from 2006, for example. One thing to learn is the capacity of different soda machines. They can vary from a tiny 240 can unit up to 600 cans. Many slow locations can get along fine with mid-sized machines and sometimes, a large machine doesn't need to be stocked to full capacity. Sometimes, a large machine at a slow location means you only have to refill it once a month, rather than every week, if you can find the right combination of flavors that sell best from that machine (Diet Dr. Pepper instead of Diet Sprite or Root Beer, for example). I serviced a Coke machine in a building full of Asian students. I found that Nestea sold so well, that eventually more than HALF of the machine was filled with Nestea and regular Coke was way down at the 4th button. Each time I restocked, It took 6 to 8 cases of Nestea versus only 2 cases of Coke. Right beside it was the candy machine, and I found that TWIX was so damn popular that I ended up having SIX rows of Twix bars (3 boxes of 36 bars each) every time I filled the machine. After inspection by my boss, I explained the situation and I was allowed to continue. I had a factory location for years that got daily service. One particular machine in the factory, I used to stock FIVE Rows with plain potato chips and only 3 or 4 single bags of Doritos. And they sold out EVERY DAY. And they never bought Pop-Tarts, but would buy 30 Hostess Apple Pies every day. The average worker there was 50 year old men who didn't eat Doritos or Pop-Tarts. I got written up constantly for not following plan-o-gram in that machine but I didn't care -- sales were thru the roof every day. Once, I took over a high-class (expensive) hotel account from another route driver which had a 20-oz Coke and a 20-oz Pepsi machine on every floor of the hotel. The Coke machines were fine as they were stocked with many flavors with no duplicates, but the Pepsi machines (9 selection units) had 3 columns each for Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Mtn Dew. When I took over, all of the sodas in the 2nd and 3rd duplicate columns were long expired, so each week, I moved them to the first columns to sell them out and I never refilled those duplicate columns. When I was done with the change-over, each Pepsi machine had 4 selections (I added Aquafina Water) and the rest of the buttons were blank white labels and the columns were EMPTY. After that, sales from the Pepsi machines nearly doubled (no more expired sodas). When my boss did an inspection and wrote me up for half-empty machines, I explained the whole story and told him to check the sales history since I took over. In the end, he was impressed and I was allowed to leave the machines like that. Sure, I could have offered more flavors, but that would have diluted the strong sales from the Coke machines and I was able to maximize sales in the Pepsi machines with only 4 selections which sold well. Working for big vending companies often means following a plan-o-gram for candy machines as well as soda machines and I regularly got into trouble for NOT following them if I discovered specific products that sold well or didn't sell at all. But I can tell you that after only 6 months on this one route, I had nearly DOUBLED the sales of the previous route driver and, out of more than 40 vending routes at the company, MY route became the #2 route for high sales nearly every week and I was earning more income than my bosses and more money than any other route driver except one and I had been with the company less than a year at that point. After about 4 years there, I got fired when all of these tiny infractions against company policy made their way to the big bosses in the big office. Yet, 6 months later, my phone rang with my bosses BEGGING me to come back and take over that route again. I gladly did that (I should have negotiated a higher pay rate) and I might still be there today if I had not been involved in a major truck wreck that left me with permanent injuries. After I went back on that route I reconfigured the machines to make the big bucks and my bosses had my back and I was never hassled again for not following plan-o-gram. I even got the warehouse boss to special order products just for me to make my customers happy.

Turn your broken soda machines into gun safes and sell them. You can also get a used pallet jack for under $200.

I'm a casual KZbin video viewer. And your healthy snacks fiasco story reminds me of my high school junior year which began in fall 1980. Fort Worth ISD decided to replace all sodas with healthy drinks in the campus vending machines. I don't remember buying any, and this idea must have gone over like a lead balloon, because when my senior year began in fall 1981, the sodas were back! 😆😆😆 I did use the machines again then! 👍

Hey Reyes can you put a soda machine at my apartment complex? The one we have now is always still our money and not giving us the product... and when we do get the product it’s usually expired

Contracts work great as long as you set them up correctly. I have a contract with a location stating that my machine can be there for at least three years and during that period, they will not accept any other vending machines or other types of food sales. To be honest, if you are making an investment of a couple of thousand dollars, having a contract with a location is usually really beneficial because you can count on the cashflow.

You need to learn how to fix them. You can get your EPA certification online to work with the refrigerants legally.

I haven't dug entirely into it, but you probably can't operate as a contractor until you log several years as an employed tech. Seemed to me that was the legality in quite a few states on it. And I think he's in California which is the capitol of backwards laws in those regards so it would likely be the case.

i worked for a vending machine company in the 90s that did 60-100k a week gross off the machines,,, they had a wharehouse and me and 12or15 route guys and machine movers i worked in the wharehouse ,,, they had like u would go in a office and they would have a break room set up drink machine coffee machine candy chips and a machine with microwave food and milk or whatever and there would be a microwave in there but that where its at is finding places where u can set it like that ,,, its easy to put a machine here or there but the difference is hige between a stop with 5 machines or one ,,,, people will try to break in them in bad areas and someone may be watching to rob u when u come for the dough

Watch the video... a lot of great extra information I don't list here, but for those wanting a summary of the info you can use for your notes, here ya go... Vending Machines Pros and Cons PROS… - Easy to start up (if you have the money) - Semi-passive income (you still have to deal w/repairs immediately, check on machines to take inventory of what needs to be refilled, and buy and re-stock product) - No contracts w/location owners/managers (but they could request it) - It’s a waiting game… takes a while to earn back your initial investment and make profit CONS… - A good machine is expensive (buy only refurbished w/warranty, not merely used!) - Hard to move - On-call (you have to deal w/repairs immediately, check on machines to take inventory of what needs to be refilled, and buy and re-stock product) - Finding a good location that makes $$ - It’s a waiting game… takes a while to earn back your initial investment and make profit TIPS… - Buy refurbished w/warranty (costs more, but worth it) - Find and secure a location first and have the vending machine seller ship and set up the machine in the location for you so you don’t have to mess with all that - Keep it simple… stick to chips, chocolates, and other candies (avoid “healthy” snacks… they don’t sell) - Do whatever you can to reach out to people to find and secure good locations even if it means knocking on business doors - To start with a super low investment, consider “honor box” vending

I probably just wasn’t paying attention, but about how much you say the cost of snacks to fill the machine per month would be ? I would also like to know if warranty cover theft or like if someone steals the whole thing lol.
@princessmarlena13594 жыл бұрын
You will want to set up an LLC to protect yourself from liability if some jerk hurts themself trying to steal a free goodie. You definitely want insurance because there’s vandals, robbers, fires, and even drunk drivers that can wreck them. Be aware of your surroundings when moving the money, you can get mugged. Armed robbers don’t even use the whole “Stick ‘em up!” technique anymore, they sneak up on their victim, shoot them, and then take the money (happened to a friend of mine who was an armored car guard/driver). You can enjoy the expired/broken/stale food/drinks but they taste pretty...interesting.

Been there done that, your advice is right on. You do make money but its not really passive income. I started from scratch and had to locate 20 machines. I kept the locations tight as in the geographic area. End result I made money but it took a couple of years then I sold the business but now the machines were worth less due to depreciation. I could manage all the machines in 2 days a week but one other day was spent getting stock and all my machines were wireless for stock info and some of my machines needed to be filled every 2-3 days. You do need to watch expiry dates and I had a couple of shelters that I gave the close to expired products that was a win win so that I did not eat very much product. The healthy products have the shortest expiry dates.
