i started my plant journey during a deep depression in march 2020 and stumbled upon your channel after searching on youtube how to propagate a monstera (my only plant at the time). i fell down the rabbit hole and binged watched all your videos and it became a light in my day, because you're always so upbeat and friendly and my plants just gave me comfort and calmness. life has improved so much since then and my (now 30+) plants bring me so much joy as well as both of your channels! thank you for everything becca

I started my plant parenthood in June of 2020. Covid collector. In the 8 months since, I have gotten rid of the plants I didn’t connect with. Killed only 4. Built an ikea greenhouse and started collecting Aroids and making my own Aroid nix. Currently, maxed out at 40. This journey over the past 8 months is not at all what I thought having plants would be like. Love it.

Not that the other KZbinrs put us down. I can't tell you how important my local plant community has become for me this year! I joined a local FB group full of fellow planty people, and have been able to not only trade some of my plants, but more importantly meet others who share my love of plants. Even if our meetings are brief and socially distanced, just being able to connect with another human being after spending the last year plus in isolation has been SOOOOO good for me. I didn't realize how much I'd been craving that interaction, I'm a very introverted person by nature, but I find myself reaching out eagerly to others when I think I can either give or trade plants with them! I can't wait until we can come together as a larger group and have plant swaps. It's the light at the end of the tunnel for me. I'm so excited.

I am so picky about the plants I buy. I may every once in a while buy one in the spur of the moment, but it's always one that speaks to me. It may seem irresponsible of me, but It's like love at first sight without considering their care right away. But I have always been prepared to adjust somethings and it's nothing inconvenient since all my plants are together in my library. And I think they enjoy it. Sorry went off on a bit of a tangent! But thankfully I have only had 3 casualties, two of which were not my fault, and one was not to happy a our moving. ( I literally grew my plants in a basement without grow lights and low light, but I only say that to express how I think plants are really strong and if you are in tune with them... they will love you, bc all of mine were thriving even my bird of paradise, the she was by the small window ) Lol, that was long, but I love your videos and you plants look lovely!

I changed the soil, so it was draining with a mix of Perlite, cactus soil, and potting soil. I have it in a clay pot. Water( tap) once a week. I had it near west facing window, and now a North facing window. I ordered a grow light...I just don't know what to do.

I hang around reddit a lot and what worries me are people who buy plants blindly and then come and ask "can I get an id?". I think the best recipe for success is thinking about the kind of environment you have (or can have with supplemental equipment) and then buying accordingly. Like I get that plants are beautiful and you feel like picking them up the moment you see them, but it's gonna end up in a heartbreak. Personally I have a small apartment that's not super bright and is pretty dry year around, so I can't get monsteras or other huge aroids or tropicals that love humidity. Long story short, be realistic about your environment and research plants before you buy.
@BeccaDeLaPlants3 жыл бұрын
Yesss absolutely!!!! Never leave the store without at least a basic idea of why the plant is/it’s family.
@lleo97033 жыл бұрын
Great video, Becca! Yes, you have to learn which plants work for you. I found that these plants don’t work for me because I have low humidity and unknown other criteria: croton, calathea, Aglaonema, homealomena Selby, Rex begonia, echevarias (except agavoides), birds nest fern, philodendron mayoii, peperomia ruby cascade, peperomia hope (no hope for me). THere are more in the list too. Now i do have a problem trying to place the plants that work so they look good in my home. I probably should reduce my plant collection....nah. Also, propagating back up plants so getting at least two of each.
