When I moved to Germany to study and at some point decided to get out of the comfort zone of my expat community, I quickly realised that not many people are interested in a friendship with someone who isn't fluent in their mother tongue. I did know German quite well before coming to the country but I was taught a very academic form of it and couldn't understand any of the slang and had difficulties with the local accent. Apparently, when you take 5 minutes to formulate a sentence, many get tired before you finish it :D They were polite about it but were certainly not receptive to my attempts to befriend them. What helped a lot, was finding a hobby I was good at and making friends within that circle first. Since I was good at that hobby, people wanted to communicate with me, exchange ideas and gossip about others. And therefore, they were willing to wait till I get my words together. Particularly, when having a one on one conversation. And once the fluency was there, I had no trouble communicating with anyone. It doesn't mean that attending social events doesn't make sense, if you can only smile and nod. I made a point of going out to almost any such event and meeting people even if it was awkward as hell and even if I did not manage to move past "hello" and "goodbye" during the whole evening. Listening to many different people helped me get used to the accents and the slang. It is exhausting (especially for an introvert like myself) but it's worth it in the long run. If you frame it as "I have a wonderful opportunity to work on the language and maybe meet interesting people", it helps a lot to lift the burden of "I'm a lonely expat and the locals don't like me" ;)

Ich vermisse Deutschland >< yeah It's better to be first a "social butterfly" where interactions are shorter at first to have time to adapt before moving in deep conversation when you just arrived. I remember when half of my sentences were mimics. People were doing jokes to me and i had to pretend to understand them to not break social momentum xD

As French, I can tell you I LOVE discussing with foreign people, I find it so interesting to learn their story and to help them learning our language and our culture ! So I totally agree with you on the "you have to make French friends" part. We are very curious, so this difference you can feel like a weight is actually the reason we're drawn to you in the first place ! Don't be shy guys 💪🏼

more than being shy or naive, don't pretend to be it (even if you are). Frenchs are not kind with people who don't seem to have an "opinion on how live should be lived " xD. That's why they're scolding ! As a french guy i feel shame for sexual, administration and opinion harass ! >< PS: And always remember, Paris is not France...

ahah that's not that hard ^^ it's like hot and cold you get atuned to the climate of the country xD it's like everything downside are what i mentionned but there also good things like curiosity, openessity and lot of deep intelectuals conversations. they're a lot of difference too in france itself. Paris is not like the south, and same for old french and young french differences. We're more chill we don't "scold". a typic french quote is "i don't agree with you but i'm ready to die to let you say what you think" ^^ c'est la vie. We just like to go deep into things. where are you from ?

I am here because I had many good experiences visiting all over the EU and when I arrived in Paris, was so disappointed & confused by so many things. @@jnewmark41 Ahah i understand ! To be fair, i don't mean "Paris is not from France" but i mean Paris is not the "all" France. It's a very specific atmosphere that i personnaly don't like it and i just imagine a foreigner that come first in france and stay only in Paris to taste France, i prefer to warn him. ^^ I have family in Paris and i have traveled in a lot of country too (i've even lived in germany for a while) and i know for sure that i could live almost everywhere where i'm gone but not Paris. I've learn a lot on Rosie's channel. Particulary about why we're grumpy and about differences like our great curiosity. Because i'm french, there is so many things that i didn't noticed on my country and discovered here. In france we have poor education on specific subjectif at school and more a general learning. That's why we don't have a good level on average but we're realy open minded on so many subjects. France is a pyramidal country. We try to be better than each other. Sometimes it's good because of healthy competition but sometimes not. The problem is our "low-risk mentality". We rely a lot on "safety" like socials helps and a lot on safety-mentality movement and that's a good point on one hand and in the other one we're "poor risk-taker". We couldn't have things like a "French Elon Musk": Too much social pressure, too poor margin for errors and liberties. I would like to go in USA ^^ me and my brother should have gone there but it was canceled because of the global situation with the virus. what did you learn on france ? were you on Paris ?

As a French person, I do think the French are too comfortable with scolding strangers and passing judgement. I definitely think there are times when it's appropriate to tell someone they're doing something wrong or inconviniencing others, but there's often a bit too much of a sense of entitlement attached to it

Reminds of the time when I did my military service in Germany through a NATO exchange (I'm Dutch ), whenever I had a night shift and the cleaning lady came in the morning I asked her if I could practice my German with her. That proved to be a masterstroke because through her I could escape the Dutch 'bubble' and my introduction into German society.

Loved what you had to say about just spending the money to master French. I struggled for the longest time to hire a tutor and have someone as a support to guide me through it because I wanted to be "self-taught", but in all honesty, that route would've taken me years instead of months and brought along so much uncertainty and confusion if I was doing all I could to progress. Seeing your "get fluent fast" video with your tutor was what pulled the trigger for me to get a tutor, because if you did it with help and got C1, I could too. You're right--just spend the money--it gave me so much peace of mind and gave me assurance I was on the right path!

The point about "no doesn't always mean no" is *so true* . I have lived in Paris for almost 18 years and one thing I have noticed about French people, particularly those in positions of some sort of power like postal workers, immigration clerks, customer service agents, etc, they absolutely LOVE telling people, "no" and refusing people things. And not only that, they all make up their own rules about policies so one person might say one thing and another might say something completely different even though they work at the same company or organization. I have finally gotten used to the fact that how you get information or get things done in France can totally depend on who you have to deal with that day. But yeah, they defintiely love telling me people, "no". Refusal is an automatic reflex that many French people have for some reason.

@@jnewmark41 Même les français se plaignent de cette characteristique chez les français. C'est uniquement en France que j'ai entendu les français qui décrivent leur propre pays comme, "la France: le pays qui dit 'non' " les français ont une réputation pour dire "non" tout de suite et puis ils discutent pourquoi. On peut toujours reconnaître ce trait chez les français et être aussi francophile. Le monde n'est pas noir et blanc. Il y a plein de belles choses en France et je trouve formidables les français mais cela ne veut dire pas qu'on ne peut pas discuter les points qui ne sont pas très agréables.

I am in the opposite position: I am french, my husband is a Kiwi and followed me in France. I have just started watching your videos and it is amazing how you point out true facts about our french culture, and it helps to understand what my husband can feel like about it, as for me, it is obviously my normality. I have moved six times as an adult - mostly within Canada. In each case, I have found that it takes on average 2-years before you are really comfortable - you know where everything is located, you are comfortable with community lingo and traditions, you know more people than the staff at the stores where you shop, where you begin to have lunch with people. All of these things are easier if you have a spouse or small children, or the language is the same... even then, you might have a coffee with them but it can still take years before you are invited into peoples homes. Its hard work and you are the one that has to make the effort - you have to get out there and get involved in the community - join sports/social clubs, got to the coffee shop, join book clubs, take classes, meet the expats, make professional connections. Its a lot of work. Personally I enjoy the process.

It's interesting to see my own country through your eyes, 'cause as I've always been living here (I confess, I'm a French male), I have grown up with some of these elements as "normal". You begin with administrations (& La Poste has been built & managed like an administration itself) where (some) people don't feel they have to serve the general public, they just do their job but don't need to roll up their sleeves to do it right. So, before starting procedures, I make my own research so that I don't request people to help me, I just ask the forms I need to fill, I tell them what to do with them... so that I don't take the risk they just say "c'est pas possible", 'cause it would be the easiest answer they can give me. To be honest, most of those who work in administrations are goodwill people and make their best to help. Being a stranger makes you an ambassador for your country, in our eyes, indeed. As we learn many details of France geography & demography in school, it's understandable we show our interest in other's country by asking these so we have elements of comparison. And as we are often taught not to speak loud, not to disturb others in public places, French people have a tendency to feel like "educating" strangers as soon as they spot they are aliens. Sorry... Not every place is safe, especially in large cities, especially in Paris. Walking alone in the metro, especially late, is not advised. As a male, I've never had issues but: - female friends reported they had issues or felt they could have had issues - I probably never put myself in "dangerous" situations - I've certainly been lucky Always keep an eye (and a hand) on your belongings in the metro. If you genuinely want to learn French, make activities (not having a drink, true activities) in French-only groups. People will enjoy sharing their passion and forgive your lack of vocabulary (& your broken French), as long as you show a true interest in the activity. International groups may be good for finding similarly expatriates, which can be needed to have a break; but focus on living the French lifestyle with French people if you want to benefit truly from your stay in France.

Salut Rosie! I first want to say, Thank you for all the years of videos. They have been a significant part of my preparations for making the move to France :) Your story and your journey has been so inspiring and motivating. I'm English and have spent the last 7 years in Australia (spent some gorgeous months in NZ too). I met my French man in Australia, where we stayed for the last 6 years. We planned to marry in 2020, covid got in the way of that one (btw THANK YOU for your videos sharing the struggles of being so far away from home during covid) , and we finally had the big day at the end of July this year...in France. We decided to make the move to France this year as well, and, well, here we are! We arrived in May and have made the 10th our home and its going well. My mari is now working and i'm working hard to get settled in Paris. The first few months were soooo exciting, but recently i went through a bit of blip and started to feel very lonely. I soon snapped myself out of it and remembered where i am and all the opportunities here! The excitement is back, i'm on day one of the Lingoda Sprint (thanks again ;)), and im loving becoming Parisienne again! Anyhoo, enough of my story, i'm sure you've heard so many. What i want to finish with saying is please keep up the good work and being there for so many. You're real, pragmatic, and a joy to watch. I moved to paris almost three years ago now to do my undergraduate degree, and i wish i knew how difficult and slow administrative tasks were and that it’s really your responsibility to figure out what you need to do/have and no one is going to sit you down and explain it nicely and clearly haha. I love the french don’t get me wrong, but any official administrative process is exhausting!

I met my French boyfriend in my home City of Toronto Canada and he was so socked that I didn’t know the population of Toronto and of Canada. He thought I was so bizarre not knowing any of this. P.S. One difference between your and my experience that I remarked on in an old video of yours -- In my 15 years in France, *nobody* has ever asked me what is our "national dish" --- or the height of our highest mountain, or the population of the U.S. I guess they all feel they know a lot about my country -- you're the one who hails from an "exotic" locale. (Cela dit, when I was 20 years old and moved to California with my older-and-wiser boyfriend, he told me, "When you meet someone new, don't ever ask them a question you could look up in an almanac." I guess the French have never learned that rule!)

Hi there! I just moved to France about 2 months ago, and I can totally relate to much of what you said - especially about being naive and standing up for yourself against administration. I have a French friend who told me to be careful at the Lyon station in Paris because of pit pocketers. I just assumed that he meant pay attention to weird people, but no. I now know that he literally means diligently watch your back and literally each and every item that you're carrying. I was so naive that I thought that I was fine putting my stuff down on the bench next to me because "it's right next to me. Who would dare even try to steal anything from me?" Luckily, no one wound up stealing anything from me, but it came very close. There was a very aggressive man who came out from no where from behind me, and in theory definitely could have grabbed my backpack off the seat. He was this aggressive even in a very populated area with signs saying that we're under surveillance. It makes me wonder what could've happened had we been in a less populated part of the station. From now on, I hold my things tightly and pay attention to my surroundings. Thank you for sharing your experience. It's important. It's also important, like you said, to not give up at "no"! Try again. Justify your case, and if need be, try a different representative or company.

Funny how you mention the food over there. I remember watching something on TV (we have Travel Channel over here) and in this one show, the host was in Paris and asked "How is it that everyone stays in shape when you all all of this good food?" A Parisian there helping her legitimately said, "It's because we don't eat it all the time and portion control." lol. Because this man said, they'll just eat ONLY a croissant with a drink. That's always stuck with me over the years. While I have NO plans of moving to France, I would still love to visit it for several reasons- 1. My ancestors came from Normandy so I want to visit that location, 2. I LOVE French art, especially Impressionism since Monet had a huge influence on my own art skills so visiting places like the Louvre is on my bucket list. Here's praying that Notre Dame is getting rebuilt too, my heart broke for the French people when I heard about the fire there. 3. For some time I've also wanted to see Le Tour De France there too since in recent years I've gotten into watching it on TV for 10 years now.

Such a great video! Sexual harassment and cat calling in France can be pretty horrible, I think it's good that you got warned. And I have never lived in Paris, but I heard it's worse than the province... I was amazed by New Zealand, and I now live in Canada, and feel very safe. I find the party anglo-saxon style quite fun and I have changed some of my habits. I love these crazy star-like dresses even if I don't do heels. I hope that if you come back to France you will live in a different city/region, so you could tell us how different it feels from Paris. It would be interesting from a foreigner's point of view. Also honestly fighting the administration system has "bucked me up" (unsure if this is good english there). But it can be a pain in the ass.

I'm Australian, and honestly, I've never been sexually harassed. I think if a man said something to you here in Australia, the other men would try to kill him! And this is probably the same in New Zealand. I don't think we realise how woman-friendly the NZ and Australian culture is. We have a very relaxed culture, but it's also very respectful. And petty crime like stealing wallets is so unheard of here. I was mugged in Paris but in Melbourne a guy ran after me to give my purse back which I had accidentally left in a cafe.

I used Duolingo to learn Russian (I'm French) but I'm pretty sure it applies for all languages: it's a decent app for beginners because it gives you a structured learning curve. However, you should see Duolingo as a tool to practice your grammar and theory and not an all-inclusive learning tool that will take you from zero to fluency. It's also important not to get caught in the "Duolingo addiction". The app has a streak system, points, exp. There's going to be a point where you need to move on to real content like small text, podcasts, and videos instead of stucking to Duolingo out of habit. Finally, since the app uses pre-made sentences and answer, it will sometimes make you think you are progressing faster than you are. Because you're not answering open questions with a blank page but rather choosing answers from a list, and reviewing questions you already saw several times. So I'd advise picking up a French grammar book and use duolingo to practice and cement the basics. However, as soon as you can start working with real content, ideally with audio and text, you should drop it and move on.
