Really nice explanation! That is very understandable! You should be able to control your cars position with each diagonal equally well. To gain more of a grasp on this mechanic you can do a couple things: Pick a random diagonal input (eg. down left) and try to hover in freeplay while using the one diagonal to stay upright and steer at the same time. (5min and repeat with the other 3 directions) When that feels easy try the first few levels of a rings map and using only 1 diagonal input. Restart the map with each of the other 3 directions. You should feel way more controlled after doing this task for a couple days. It teaches you the timing for all different rotations your car can make with each diagonal input.

I feel like no one explains how down right would turn you left, but only if the back of the car is facing you, if the belly of the car is facing you, it will instead turn you right.
