Oh my god you wrote fanfiction?! I LOVE that, I still write fanfiction now, even as I'm drafting a novel that I hope to get published one day! Honestly it's helped me get rid of a LOT of the anxiety I had about writing, and it's made me much more confident and experienced in things I thought I was bad at (looking at you, dialogue). I'm so happy you're defending the "writing for fun" life, I think a lot of people forget that writing can be a job (hopefully one day) but you should definitely try and let it be a PASSION first! And not everything you write out of passion should be published traditionally.

I've recently begun to realize how important it is to be able to just sit back and write for fun. It's starting to make sense why game developers (for example) participate in so many random game jams. It's so freeing to be able to work on something without having to worry about whether it's the best thing ever. You can move on from it when you think it's time to move on. But I don't think this is emphasized so much in writing circles. Everything has to have a purpose. Even if it's not your major work, it will be something you plan to publish _some_ day. This video is a very refreshing counter to that.

I love this! I love hearing about your creative process and thinking through your stories! I'd love to see your NaNoWriMo content. I'm a rebel usually and for the last few years I've written screenplays, a stage play, and an audio drama. I like the participation of NaNo but it's not a one-size-fits-all. Physically incapable of being chill? Let me fetch you the club jacket, it's cold today. I once again rearranged the gameplan of a previously shelved story. Instead of a TV series it'll start as a novel, which I will (inevitably) break into 4 or 5 volumes for the sake of the readers' sanity. LOL, bonus chapter.

I absolutely love this! I’d love to watch videos about your query letter process. I wrote a query letter for my YA fantasy novel (that I got writer friend feedback on), but I never ended up querying that book because I never finished revising it. I’d love to query the novel I’m revising (my PhD dissertation novel, Adult Fantasy), so I think a video like that could be helpful! And yes to writing short fiction and sequels/companion novels to LH! I absolutely LOVE your excerpt of THE FLOATING HOUSE! Gorgeous prose! I hope you’re able to write it soon! Re: deciding between writing an idea as a short story or a novel, there’s no reason you can’t do both, even if you get the short story published! All legit magazines will return the rights for published short stories to the author, whether it’s right away or after like a year. If you search “short stories that used to be novels,” you’ll get a ton of examples-always an option!

yeah! it’s not a copyright issue for me, it’s more a creative one. there’s a plot twist in the short story that i originally wanted to utilize in a book idea. so it would be kinda like “spoiling” it if i do end up publishing the short story. but i don’t like “saving” ideas haha so im just gonna write it and not worry about publication for now.
