One of my favorite authors, Kristen Britain, writes all her rough drafts by hand. Good luck with the garden. While they aren't native to your area, if you are looking for hard to kill plants, mint and chives are your friend - even if you think you have killed them, they will come back even stronger.
@KateCavanaugh9 ай бұрын
I'm hearing more and more authors that swear by handwritten first drafts! Do you know if Kristen types hers up after or references it or just ignores it and starts anew with the 2nd draft? And THANK YOU that is such good info. I love chives and mint so very happy to hear that they're resilient bahaha.

@@KateCavanaughbe careful with planting mint directly into the yard!!! it spreads really quickly and can become an invasive species if you don’t closely monitor where it grows
@exploringallgenres9 ай бұрын
@@KateCavanaughI believe she types the next draft referencing her hand written first draft, filling in parts that come to her as she transcribes it. You're welcome, I've been gardening my whole life so I know a thing or two lol though your gardening climate is the exact opposite of mine, I'd be happy to offer any additional advice that I can.

One of my cats came over to watch because he saw your dogs on screen. He watched until the end after that. I'm glad you're getting in some healing journaling. I feel like there's a balance to be found with journaling because it can help with processing everything but sometimes it takes time to be ready for that. It's still a lot of work and, honestly, sometimes putting words to it is too exhausting. But it does help get stuff out so you can pick what goes into your actual work.

OMGGGGG what's your cat's name?? Animals are so precious, we really don't deserve them. Yes! You make an excellent point!! Journaling really can be exhausting, but it's been a great first step in processing through my emotions, and then being able to pick and choose what of those experiences make it on pages for OTHERS to read.

I do a mix of transcribing what I write by hand or just skimming it and then rewriting a scene wholesale with only the occasional glance at the notebook.

Kate, what a wonderful video, thank you sooo much! Like you, I've decided to become a better gardener this year. My expectations are low, too. I just want to make a little refuge for bees, butterflies, hedgehogs, squirrels and other animals, so my garden can stay natural and wild; at the same time, it shouldn't look too messy and neglected. I will start by taking care of the trees, bushes, and plants that are already growing here … Hopefully, you and I will grow a green thumb while practising horticulture. 🌱🌼🌳🌷🐝✨

This sounds lovely!! I want to do this too because where I live in England we've lost a lot of our wild habitats and the animals have lost their homes :( we have mowed a pathway through our lawn to keep it a bit tidy looking then grown wildflowers in the 'natural' area, hoping we get lots of bees this summer!
@YunaKatz9 ай бұрын
@@balletickid Yes, here in Switzerland, too, the bee population (and many other insects) has declined dramatically and hedgehogs, birds and other forest animals cannot find enough food and water. I've already started collecting dry wood and autumn leaves to make houses for the hedgehogs. Oh, the bees will love your wildflowers! I'm sure your meadow will be humming and buzzing with happy bees. 🌷🐝🌱

Kate!!! I loved this vide and getting to see what you work on in a day. It really gave me some good insight into how to better balance writing in multiple projects at the same time because I really like how you manage to carve out time for each project you're working on and fit the reading in as well. I too text myself story ideas lol and while I do have a notes app for some reason it's just easier for me to text myself or record myself talking about the idea on the recording app I have too. I think it's really cool that you're getting into gardening and that was quite impressive for a day's worth of work. Growing your own vegetables and things seems like a wonderful idea and certainly down the road will save you from having to buy those items from the store and then you'll know where the product came from because you grew it. I think if your mom and mother-in-law are good with gardening it could be a great bonding experience for the three of you to do and with them two I'm sure you'll be a pro in no time. Also I really need to get back into journaling and this just reminded me of that. Journaling in the morning has always been a hard thing for me to do (which is what people advise you to do) but I was thinking about taking the morning pages approach but in the evening and calling it my night pages lol. (Hmmm possible experiment there that I should try 🤔) Great video Kate as always. Sorry for the novel length comment lol. Take care of yourself! ❤❤
