I like how you took your Fantasy Model Kit Box Art to the next level with the Matchbox kits; which had artwork on all surfaces, and not just on the top and the sides. The clear window on the back to show the parts was also a nice, classic Matchbox touch! 69th like.

Thanks. Yeh, I'm really happy with how those 'back of the box' pics came out. Very evocative of the real kits :) I can almost smell that unique new plastic model smell :) Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@Matteline Seeing the back of the box for the Indiana Jones Tank at 11:33 especially makes me wish this was an actual kit and not a "what-if?" The inclusion of Indy fighting the Nazi is priceless! I also don't think there is a model of a Pilatus P-2 currently available, (or at least, not one available when the kit at 10:55 would have been new.) Matchbox could have gotten some additional mileage out of the tool by offering a separate kit in real-world livery. The same thing goes for the Short Solent Flying Boat at the beginning of this presentation . . . . You want a "unique new plastic model smell?" I take it you've never experienced the smell of a brand new 1970's Monogram 1/24th Scale Custom Show Car kit; especially those created by Tom Daniel. Now, THAT was a memorable smell! As always, I'm looking forward to your next installment in this series! Thanks again!

another comment for pedantry: Zeppelin did research docking a biplane with the Hindenburg though they didn't get the trapeze placed right. The idea was the plane would rendezvous with the Hindenburg some time out from landing. The plane would drop off a pair of customs officers to do customs before landing, while the plane carried off the air mail

They also had a Mig21 and a Bear transport. The Mig 21 was approx 1/12 scale and was very highly detailed. The only way I could tell the scale was the pilot was a Maj Matt Mason toy which was about six inches high. The Bear transport was smaller with about a two and half foot wingspan.

I really enjoyed this video series!! What an imagination you have! Another Ice Station Zebra's connection to Firefox. During the escape flight Firefox shot down a Tu-95 Bear bomber. This miniature model also came from Ice Station Zebra. At the climatic showdown Tu-95s brought the Soviet paratroopers to seize the Ice Station. I saw the Tu-95 model at a Visual Effects Exhibition in Tokyo back in late 1980's. It was a big miniature. (about 5 feet wingspan). Making of Firefox article in Cinefantastique magazine also showed a photograph of the Tu-95 model.

To see how you've tied the two together here is to me an absolute treat. Even the way you've come up with the box rear artwork (diorama) leaves me gobsmacked. And to top it off after actually recently re-reading McClean's Guns Of Navarone you do a box art of the Greek caique featured in the story. This video is 17 minutes of pure joy.

In Ice Station Zebra, the USS Tigerfish is stated to be a nuclear attack boat. However, it is played by a US Navy Diesel boat, USS Ronquil (SS-396). Unusually for a film, the hull number was repainted during filming. USS Ronquil was a WWII Balao class submarine, modernized after the war to GUPPY IIA standard. GUPPY was a program to update WWII subs to extend their service life into the Cold War.
@Matteline9 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting. That makes a lot more sense now. When I was looking for reference I was quite confused by the Guppy designation, I'd see pictures of a 'Guppy II class' but the conning tower/sail was a completely different shape.

Great video as always! There were two Ford Tri-motor kits available, the Airfix 1/72 and a "box scale" one by Monogram. The latter would have been more accurate "out of the box" because it had the uncowled radial engines. I believe it possibly came with a husky sled team as it depicted an aircraft used in the Admiral Byrd Arctic or Antarctic expeditions (willing to be corrected in this!) The sled parts could be adapted as the cargo the plane carried in the film.

I did some.researcha and apparently, the Short Soelnt started life as a Sunderland. With some. Changes . I think the changes Weeley so extensive that it warranted being designated a new Aeroplance. If course, being a descendant of the Sunderland means it could not have been around in 1938 - when 'Raiders' takes place. There's a cool.video that goes into much more detail - check.out the link in the description to the 'all the aircraft in Raiders' video. description

matchbox dioarama kits were the bees knees of kits and i bought them all and 2 of some. i also bought a few aircraft. the 2 colour and crisp fit with no flash was superb,sad they stopped and i always wished they would do the same with sci fi....
@Matteline9 ай бұрын
Yeh, I remember when the kits first came out. They were available from our local sweet shop and that is where I would usually buy them - instead of Beatties. I think this accompanied with the 2 or 3 colour gimmick, and the fact that they were made by the same people who made the toy cars, lessened their impact for me as 'proper kits'. But the tanks were a home-run. Fantastic. I think I must have bought them all. and rarely painted them. Great stuff. Thanks for watching. There are some Matchbox kits in the other videos in the series.
@ajivins19 ай бұрын
Revell still make some of them. With the tanks you have to check that they're 1.76 scale as the 1.72nd ones are Revell toolings with no dioramas. I did Monty's Caravan, the Half Tracks (German and American) and the twin set of French Char B and Renault tanks in a street scene amongst (many) others... I have a 1.72nd Walrus in the house, pretty sure that's an old matchbox too.

As someone interested in the history of China, the problem with the shot of the aircraft flying from Shanghai over the Great Wall of China is that Shanghai is nowhere near the Great Wall of China! About 800 miles away, from what I've read. As for the idea of hanging a biplane under an airship, launching a smaller aircraft from a larger has been tried many times. The difficult part is hooking it on again...
@Matteline9 ай бұрын
Ha. That is interesting about the Great Wall of China. I wonder as they crash land in India, is there a flight path from Shanghia, over the Great Wall, that would have them going in enough of the right direction for India? Artistic license aplenty in these Indiana Jones movies. I thought the biplane would not re-dock with the airship, i figured it would go and do whatever it was dispatched to do and then land at an appropriate airstrip.
