Back in the early 90s our local model club helped out an American engineer working in the oil industry with a project to build a replica of the Rod Taylor Time machine. It wasn't a kit but something you could have bought complete , it was , I believe 1/6th or so in scale , mostly in Brass. It had a beautifully etched main disk with lots of etched details on the control panel. It was electrically controlled, you inserted a miniature control crystal , the displays lot up and the main disk spun in different directions assuming you wanted to go forward or backin time. It was a really work of art and as far as I know only a few were built and at least one of them was actually presented to Rob Taylor himself. But like most projects like this the costs and effort of turning a one off into a mass production item defeated the team working on it , wish I could have afforded one!

The video is on KZbin, if you're not familiar with it (Top Gear Space Shuttle) I think their assembled "Shuttle" on the launch pad, would make a great Airfix kit! Ha! Oh man, I'd be lining up for the model of the 'Batavia Queen'! As a kid I tried to convert one of my wooden sailing ships; I couldn't count how many times that ship rode out Krakatoa's fury. And the 'Time Machine', what a great kit that would be; and in typical Aurora fashion, on the base they could include the end table with the candle and the clock. And finally, yes, as a nine-year old, some episodes of Scooby-Doo actually bordered on slightly scary. The diver would be fantastic!

I always look forward to your "What If Fantasy Model Kit Box Art" posts! I find myself wanting most, if not all, of what you come up with. As usual, one tends to stand out, and in this case it's "The Jupiter" dirigible at 8:08 from the old Irwin Allen movie, "Five Weeks in a Balloon," depicted as a classic, Aurora kit. That said, your re-do at 9:04 would be a much better idea; though Aurora would have probably produced both kits, and released them as a set, or separately. In any case, the 1/64th scale version could include instructions for making a balloon envelope if desired from papier mâché, using a large dime store balloon as the form; which could then be popped, once the outer shell had dried. (Back in the day, this was a common technique for making a astronaut or diver's helmet for a Halloween costume.) As a sidebar, according to Wikipedia, this movie was made in 1962. Two years later, Irwin Allen would make "Lost in Space." This makes me wonder if that was why the Robinson's spaceship was named, "Jupiter 2" . . . ? Also noteworthy is your "Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines" models. Those would have made excellent, fun kits; though I think this would have been more along the lines of MPC rather than Wing Nuts. For now, I have plans to either sculpt a Muttley figure from epoxy putty, (or find some youngster to 3D Print one for me,) to fit the Atlantis reissue of "The Red Baron's Fokker" that was a companion to the "Snoopy in his Sopwith Camel" kit. Ever since I was a kid, I always wanted to see a WW1 "Dogfight" with Snoopy vs. Muttley! Finally, I would like to suggest a fantasy, original MPC line that would have been a variation on their "Pirates of the Caribbean" skeleton figure kits shown at 6:15: A similar series with a Western / Cowboy theme. I remember my friends and I in Junior High thinking this would have been a very cool series that could have been called, "Western Ghost Town," with Cowboys, Indians, Miners, etc. (Of course, "Zap/action" would have been a must!) Thanks for sharing your imagination! 20th Like.

Thanks for all the comments! Great ideas. I'd like to see that 'Around the World in 80 Days' kit to see hownit looks. According to the box it has an actual balloon. I can imagine the 'Juipter' having a similar set up. Maybe a bit hokey, but hey, it was the 1960s. I know the Jupiter 2 was originally called the Gemini 12.. I don't know the history of wither name. You might be onto something :) The cowboy ghost town sounds look a cool.idea..I'd like to see that as. TV show. Did you do anything with it?
@JohnWilliamNowak8 ай бұрын
I believe the Jupiter 2 was named for the Jupiter, a Von Braun rocket that took some of the first animals on suborbital space flights. The next rocket family he worked on was, of course, Saturn.
@modelermark1728 ай бұрын
@@Matteline Ever since Round 2 reissued the MPC "Pirates of the Caribbean" kits under the Lindberg brand, (molded in glow-in-the-dark plastic, no less,) I've considered the idea. But it would require extensive modification to turn the Pirate skeletons into Cowboy / Indian skeletons. Throw in that the flintlocks and cutlasses would need to be turned into Colts and Winchesters - as well as the Western bases needing to be completely scratch built - and it would be a VERY daunting project. Actually, there were Skeleton Cowboys (albeit in 1/16th scale) that came as accessories with the big Pyro "Laramie Stage Ghost" custom show car kit around 1970; a few years before MPC came out with their 1/12th scale Skeleton Pirates based on the Disneyland ride. Still, the idea of an MPC Western Skeleton kit series is intriguing; especially if some of the scenes also included skeleton horses. But the idea that immediately comes to mind is three skeleton cowboys sitting around a table in a saloon setting, playing cards, with whisky bottles and glasses. The "Zap/action" feature could show all of them prepared to shoot each other under the table. Of course, one cowboy / gambler would need his hand (made with decals) to show "Aces and Eights" . . . .

Hello, I'm afraid I don't remember which one of your "What If" videos covered the alien saucer from "The Thing" but I learned something interesting today: The matte paintings of the saucer were done by Albert Whitlock: The same painter (and British one as well) who did the matte paintings for the original Star Trek series. Just a little detail you might find interesting. Have a great day!

Thanks for watching. I actually have not done the spaceship from 'John Carpenter's The Thing', although that is a cool contemporary (for the 1980s) design of a classic flying saucer. I havent done the ship from the original 'The Thing/The Thing from Another World' as you only see the tip of the saucer and that would be a lot of guess work. I am not sure if they even designed the whole thing. I am familiar with Albert Whitlock's work - from 'Star Trek' and some of the early Disney live-action movies and onto the incredible vfx work in the 1970s and 80s - 'The Hindenburg' and 'Colossus - The Forbin Project' are among my personal favourites. Ahh, I had to look up he phantom space man and I remember him now, Yeh he was creepy! For me, the diver was the best choice doe to the luminous quality of his suit. Also the classic pose seen in the title sequence felt similar to the 'square' Aurora Wolfman box art. I was introduced o the Aurora boxes in the square boxes. I thought about the Amusemant Park robot - too sci-fi as a standalone image - and the green ghoulish guy from the first episode - too much like Frankenstein - so the diver just seemed like the right image to connect with the real Aurora monsters and also be instantly recognisble from the show.

The ship itself and several passes for the lighting, which was done in heavily fogged up studio. And all composited together. when you see the model itself with none of the lights switched on it looks almost complete different, a dark gray jagged mass.
