"Socialism used to be a dirty word in the US" Social democracy is not (democratic) socialism. They are two different things. In the simplest terms: Democratic socialism wants to replace the capitalist system with socialism using democratic methods. They want to do this slowly and in increments (rather than wholesale revolution because those never go well). This means they'll initially work with the system such as raising minimum wage and bringing single-payer healthcare, but their end goal is to replace the capitalist system. *Social democracy wants to keep the capitalist system. They support many things that democratic socialists support like universal healthcare, minimum wage and regulations, but they want to keep (regulated) capitalism*

I’ve seen good amount of Americans not understanding the difference between the groups. I’m a social democrat myself and I always tell people that there isn’t really any true socialist societies that exist. Most of the world is mixed based economies that have capitalist systems but at the same time provide regulations, free education and healthcare.

Democratic Socialists don't necessarily want a complete ban on private ownership, but believe most things should be publicly owned and that we should redistribute wealth to make sure no one is too poor or too rich. Universal basic income, income caps, workers being involved in all corporate decisons, nationalization of energy, healthcare, hospices, prisons, and education among other things. the degree of these things varies from person to person, but that's the goal.
@Drago_Nyx

@@matteo-ciaramitaro What u described pretty much sound like socialism. I think what makes Democratic socialists different from orthodox socialists is how to transcend a capitalist society to a socialist society. Democratic socialists would prefer establishing socialism through a democratic process of voting which is a peaceful transaction. Orthodox would want to establish it through uprisings and revolutions that are led by the working class and focus on overthrowing the upper class.
@matteo-ciaramitaro

I agree, I just was trying to say there is variation among us on which policies are necessary and when to stop. Some of us think all incomes should be within an acceptable range and others actually want equality of outcome, meaning everyone has the access to the same things and equal means. Which theoretically is just communism. Most democratic socialists draw a distinction from communism, although socialism and communism meant almost the same thing at one point, socialism is obtaining equality among its people through government control and communism is a state where there is no longer any capital, no religion or class, and everyone works foe the greater good and are motivated by helping their fellow persons. People who identify as socialists and not as communists don't accept a utopia like this could exist. If it could, capitalism wouldn't have formed, as capitalism is the product of some humans needing to hoarde more resources(greed). Socialists instead believe in forcing the moral system on those who would be unable to maintain it without the threat of government action. And as OP said, social democracy is just capitalism where the government tries to implement more regulations and worker protection

@@tsunamix0147 social democracy is the path to abolish the capitalist owner without the violent revolution part lol. Which leads to a market socialism that just means the workers themselves will collectively control there workplace democratically together. They have votes for there management/ people they wanna hire/ and share ideas on how they should organize there work as a team. these groups all compete with the other worker co-ops in the market. It simply removes the capitalist owner and puts power in the workers hands. @Antisocialmedias
@Antisocialmedias 3 жыл бұрын
@@moistness482 Its just semantics. Its really not a big deal. Yes, social democracy and democratic socialism can be identified as different things but its still not grammatically wrong to refer to social democracy as democratic socialism. The word Socialism might be used to identify a specific ideology but at the end of the day, socialism is just the joining of the words Social (relating to society or it's organization) and Ism ( a distinctive practice, system, or philosophy, typically a political ideology or an artistic movement.) So its not incorrect to describe democratic socialism as a democratic movement or system that is related to society, which is what social democracy is on a fundamental level. People only have an issue because there is already an ideology that is well known as Socialism but that doesnt mean nothing else can be desribed as socialism. Just like we describe a patch of dirt as earth but we also have named our planet Earth. So is earth a planet or is it dirt? The answer is both. Not the best example but thats the idea.

True Socialism with a functioning democratic system and capitalist system works great in France, Germany, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Australia, we do understand, that Socialism without Capitalism can turn into Communism, but Capitalism without a healthy dose of Socialism could turn into Corporatism and Fascism, think about it for a minute. We have 20 Million people without Health Insurance, 1.8 Trillion dollar Student Loan debt, 640K people per year go bankrupt for Medical Debt, all of this isn't sustainable, nor is it good for the economy. If we can spend 40T for the past 10 years of Private Insurances, we can spend 36.2T for the next 10 years for everybody to have healthcare, with Dental+Vision, lower Waiting times, and higher quality healthcare with higher life expectancies. It's time to expose the lack of rising wages since the mid 70's, people are loosing their purchasing power for the same work because wages *stopped* catching up with productivity. It's time to help the Dying working class in this country. These aren't radical Ideas, we've been pushed so far right that these ideas are bad, but most of the developed worlds can do it with lower tax rates than us. Please have an open mind.

How many people that make brands like Nike would go along with socialism if they don’t make profit? 4. How does socialism handle corruption? 5. If 80% of businesses are small in U.S. wouldn’t that hurt the business owner (who’s not rich) that incurred the investment and risk? 6. What social democracy must have to realize its real potential is one simple thing: changing the way government at all levels raises revenue. What should be taxed? The answer is: rents. What are rents? Rents are economic values associated with natural advantages. Locations in every community have different economic value based on proximity to public goods and services and population. These location values (or rents) result from aggregate investment in these public goods and services and not what any owner of a location does or does not do with the location held. Thus, communities should rightfully collect via taxation the potential annual rental value of all locations, exempting all private property (i.e., the buildings people construct) from taxation. There are many other sources of rents. Any competition-limiting license generates rents. Examples include liquor licenses and taxi medallions. Transfer of the license (as opposed to a tavern or restaurant or taxi cab) should be awarded by competitive bidding with the proceeds coming to the community. One more example to offer (there are many more). No two airplanes can safety occupy the same air space at the same time. Take-off and landing slots are limited by nature and have different values based on the time of the day or day of the week. These slots should be awarded by frequent auctions, the rents coming into the community.

Why would we want to have Socialism to just turn it back over to Barbarism. It is Barbarism that allows for the cancerous growth of self interest and Capitalism to take root. Are not Anarchists self interested. Are not Anarchists Competitive? Do Anarchists not fight each other in Wars? To have a One World Planned Sustainable Economy where we are not all in some Perpetual War with each man fighting every other, well, we must have Order, and Anarchy is , is it not, the very opposite of Order, right? That would make Anarchy wrong. But, yes, Anarchists have a certain kind of Bad Boy sheen about them. so, yes, saying you are an Anarchist might get you laid or have you think it might help to get you laid, but as a Political and Economic Theory, well, get real and grow up.

The order is not imposed upon society by some kind of political elite, but it is created by people coming to a consensus. Of course that means that in an anarchist society, people will spend a lot of time doing politics”. Well, aren’t people doing an awful lot of politics now, and how is that working out? And isn’t politics just a continuum of violence. Aren’t wars the last resort of politics (or maybe Peace is the last resort of politics, being the last resort in Wars). Yes, I get your point that the Revolution one imagines from Anarchy is to displace the present Vertical Struggle with a new set of Horizontal stuggles (like the way a Union Hall will break out into a deadly chair throwing brawl because the Pipe Fitters think they are worth 6 dollars more an hour than the Janitors, or how one Workers Coop in Brazil will burn down a neighboring Workers Coop that decided to undercut the going rate for tennis shoes). But what I envision would really be a Revolution. We need to have a Dictatorship of the Auto Learning Super Computer Planning Algorithm. We can start the System off by giving it a broad set of parameters in regards to resource management, moral and ethical considerations, and the general understanding that given all possible outcomes, it would be better for people to be happy than sad, and then just let the System do its thing. Let the System Network have access of to all data, not only all of the University Sociological Studies but every whiny blog and KZbin comment. We would then just hope that the Auto Learning Feature in the System would kick in and evoke all the little tweaks that would go towards fixing whatever it is we will inevitably be complaining about. And then, even if the System does what many people will think is a terrible job, at least It will be the focus of all the political hatred and hostility and not Other People, whether they be vertically or horizontally arranged.

@@leovolont The question is who gets to set the goals for the AI. AI is always some sort of "literal genie", taking whatever you tell it to do absolutely literally and finding some way of doing it exactly as ordered, but not necessarily as intended. One deep learning system was told to sort an unsorted list, in order to see if it would come up with something better than Quicksort or Mergesort. It learned how to hack the system on which it was running and then delete the list, thereby solving the problem since any empty list is sorted.

@@elfboi523 Hi Elfboi, Yeah, here in the West, where relatively little money is being devoted to AI, we hear some weird stories about AI in its infancy. But I am guessing that both Japan and Korea are dwarfing Google, where every nickel dime and quarter going into AI research and development is considered money robbed from the next Quarters Earnings. Indeed, we can suppose all of the horror stories we hear about AI to be largely leaked by Corporate Bean Counters who wish to discredit AI and bring that money back to their own favored departments. And what Japan and Korea are doing in regards to AI is a mere fraction of what China is doing. China is treating Being the First to the AI Singularity the way America once thought of being first on the Moon. China is expanding its own University Departments as well as pulling in Americans and European Engineers. I've heard that Western Staff Engineers are promised their own Labs and Departments if they come to work with China (for their positive contributions or at least to take them away from America or Europe). But, now, about the substance of what you are saying, that AI cannot be entirely relied upon. Well, remember, AI will be given no single discreet task, but trillions of tasks. Planning an Economy is not a linear IN OUT process. Indeed, if we can define the Singularity in any terms, it will be in regards to how the Over All System can coordinate all the separate tasks with the least amount of sacrificing the parts to optimize the whole, while still not allowing itself to get so lost in the details just to be slammed by some unexpected Contradiction that would crash the System somehow. You know, I am guessing that with all the resources that have gone into AI, that the Algorithmic Structure that is the Singularity has already been developed, and now it is being observed in isolation, being fed larger and larger historical data bases and being evaluated on how well It predicts the Known Future (which is how they test Weather Forecasting Models. Oh, since these Systems will have to interface with Societies, I would not be surprised if the AI Prototypes are being put in charge of China's Reeducation Camps (that is, determining what is even possible with people, then setting up objective and quantifiable goals, and then evaluated on meeting those goals. Each Reeducation Camp can try out some different variant of the Singularity Algorithm). Again, the concept that we must most focus on is that Learning in AI is cumulative, that AI never forgets and any lesson learned is learned forever. We will see AI's rough edges only once, in the beginning. But it will only get smoother, better, smarter. But we have been dealing with Human Leader for how many centuries now, and can we say they have gotten any better. Indeed, if one looks at History, it has only been downhill since Cyrus the Great. The machines are Humanities' only hope.

I’m from a country that has a Social democratic government. We have 100% free education that is world class, our healthcare is functional and completely free. In this country if you’re left homeless, well wait, that’s very hard to do, since the government will support you fully, if you’re left unemployed for some reason. We have a very successful social and children’s protection service. Our public transportation is owned by the government, including schools, libraries, the only liquor store company we have, etc. Oh and we have also been studied to be the world’s happiest country, three years in a row, by the United Nations 🇺🇳.The downside is that if you make 5k per month, you’ll only get 3337€ after taxes so I guess its not free anything, but it sure is cheaper. Ps. We don’t only have tuition free universities that are world class, we get paid 💰 for studying here. Suddenly the taxes don’t sound that bad. Well if you make a million per month you’ll cry your eyes out since your tax rate is gonna be some 50% 😂 But if I would be a millionaire I wouldn’t live in this cold and dark country, that would change the whole dynamic. So my opinion is that social democracy works, very well. That’s just my outlook from the world happiest country, with one of the best school systems :3.

Mattias what do you even mean. You just said Socialism is falling in Europe yet you don't even know if a european country has socialism? The answer is no, no country in Europe has socialism. Many have socialist like programs, but like every country does. Free reign capitalism sucks.

The challenge of all thoughtful persons is to come to the proper balance between rights to property and the protection of human rights. Out of many years of study, the "ism" I find best achieves this proper balance is "cooperative individualism". In the design of socio-political arrangements and institutions the just objective and just outcome ought to be to secure and protect individual liberty within a cooperative societal framework. Privilege, hierarchy and monopoly are the enemies of cooperative individualism. There is a long list of thoughtful writers who over several centuries offered and supported their views on what is necessary for such a society to be established and maintained. One of these writers, the American political economist Henry George, is shown here as the image associated with this post. If you have never heard of Henry George or read any of his works you owe it to yourself to do an online search about him. Since 1932 there has been a Henry George School of Social Science headquartered in New York City. From that time until the late 1960s, the school was expanding all across the United States, Canada, and several other countries. Unfortunately, as an adult education program that did not meet the criteria for the granting of degrees, the Henry George Schools lost the ability to attract credential-seeking students who began to attend local community colleges and other state-supported institutions. New York City has been an important exception, and the school today offers in-class courses as well as online lectures and courses over Zoom. I have served on the faculty of the Henry George School for many years. Recently, I completed a lecture series on the history of money, banking and credit. Beginning in September, I will deliver lectures on "Henry George, Karl Marx and their followers." This series of lectures would, I suspect, be of some interest and value to those of you who think of yourself as socialist in your political, social and economic perspectives. Those of you who embrace individualist perspectives may find some clarity with Henry George's treatment of rights of property as compared to that by Karl Marx. These lectures are offered free of charge but you must register in advance through the school's website. Edward J. Dodson, M.L.A. Just be a democracy with a strong and fair democratic process and laws that are social (=benefit the needs of as many people as possible without limiting the freedoms of others). Even within the current House of Representatives the social democratic caucus within the Democratic Party is the largest. The Congressional Progressive Causus has 95 members. Compared to other fractions within both the Republican and Democratic Party, they are the largest as well. In a Proportional Representation system a social-progressive party could, easily, have been the largest congressional party. But because of the Winner Takes All System within a districts system the social-progressive fraction is always forced to lean to the right and more conservative side to at least have some influence.

Weaknesses of socialism is they go to far and often support a Soviet style planned economy over a social democracy. They often attach racist, antisemitic and weird sexual stuff to social democracy and socialism even though they should have nothing to do with each other.

First off: Hi, Francesca!✋🏿 I miss Newsbroke, but glad to see you in new videos! Now then, org. lab. is NOT helped by rich fat🐱s - I learned that from former animators who worked for Walt Disney (who hated, Hated, HATED unions). Supporting the workers builds the middle class. Also, if the current guy in the White House can proudly and unironically call himself a "Nationalist" (which is bad), then it's a good time to consider the ideas of a Socialist.🇺🇸

@@BuddyL Nationalism is not bad at all. If you are referring to the axis during WW2, they were more imperialist than nationalist. They wanted to TAKE OVER the world, not merely secure their borders and care for their home, which is the point of true nationalism. Socialism on the other hand destroys the incentive for people to work, gives the government too much power, and fails every single time.

At no point in the video was the question "can socialism work" ever addressed. The closest thing to giving a definitive answer was the last guy stating that because there is a technological revolution, something new must be tried. In which case the conclusion is "why not try socialism". But actually examining why it would work was never discussed
