+Sanchan Thank you! It seems people are waking up. Not only do they own CNN, but the list goes on! Cinemax, HBO, TNT, TBS, Bleacher Report, NBA.com, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, HLN, DC Comic, and Warner Brothers are also owned by Time Warner. At the end of the day only 4 or 5 companies control everything we see and read. Most of them are our Internet providers also. Kinda scary.

"We are often told that the poor are grateful for charity. Some of them are, no doubt, but the best amongst the poor are never grateful. They are ungrateful, discontented, disobedient, and rebellious. They are quite right to be so. Charity they feel to be a ridiculously inadequate mode of partial restitution, or a sentimental dole, usually accompanied by some impertinent attempt on the part of the sentimentalist to tyrannise over their private lives. Why should they be grateful for the crumbs that fall from the rich man’s table? They should be seated at the board, and are beginning to know it." OSCAR WILDE.

@@anastasiamurawski3825 The only greedy person here is you who would anoint themselves with the authority over what they did not have a hand in creating. Truth is, the wealthy have already done far more for the economy as a whole that you ever have. Life isn't fair kid; it's what you make of it. Best you accept that soon. If you're so worried about the homeless, then get off your ass and help. Donate, time money, whatever. Better yet, start a business and give them jobs. But do not sit at your computer whining and bitching for other people to solve the world's woes.
@billmelater6470
@billmelater6470 4 жыл бұрын
You've got a lot of buzz words, but not a lot of sense. Now what I'm going to say here is surely going to sound mean to you. However, you must know that I am a pessimist, every day afraid of losing my job and my livelihood to the point of keeping me in a perpetual neurotic state. I am by no means wealthy, but I cherish what I have and will work to keep it so that I might stand on sturdy ground to help others. I will not let the rhetoric you support turn my ground to sand. What I say here and have said is simple and very fundamental point of fact. You are trying to argue for an end result, starting from the sky trying to work back to the ground instead of trying to figure out how to get from the ground to the sky. Thinking you have the right to control and use what is not yours is greedy, regardless of need or want. It is not up to the rich anymore than it is up to another poor person to take care of you or me. Only you can take care of you. Everything else must be gained by trade with consent of both parties, otherwise you're just supporting theft. Any reasoning that places the labor and resources of others at your disposal by right is an argument for slavery. Health Care for example, is a service. If you can't do it to yourself, then someone else has to. For you to think it is a right, is exactly the same as believing someone else's time and labor is yours by right. That is slavery and for that reason, is not a viable option morally or functionally. *"Most wealthy people look after number one and their own, I sure dont see them doing anything for the economy"* That's because you don't have a basic understanding of economics or how wealth is gained in the first place. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs didn't get rich because they forced people at gunpoint to buy a product. The industries that sprouted from their product and the jobs they and those other industries helped usher in is far more valuable as a whole than any singular handout you would cry for. The complete fact is that they have done far more for the economy that you or I ever have and have in fact grown the wealth as a whole. The "wealth pie" is not stagnant, it grows and shrinks depending on economic realities. The idea that someone has to by right do something for you because they have more than you is selfishness of the bad sort and it will get you nowhere. Blaming others is the first step in the wrong direction. Everything starts with you. Someone else having more than you does not mean they stole from you or took from you anymore than it means you deserve any of it. You can argue they're keeping something from you all you want, but the truth is, that none of what they're keeping was yours to begin with so it too falls flat. So you've done what you can within your power which is great and more people should do it. The problem is that many think then that they should be allowed through the gun of the State, force others to do what is in their eyes right which blinds them to their own wrong. You can't be generous or charitable through other people's money. Reaching into someone else's pocket regardless of what you do with the ill gotten gain is still theft. And yes, you have worked a "living wage", given that you are not dead. Actually, you're better off in fact, given that you're even able to communicate with me on KZbin. "Poverty" is relative to time and geography. There are people far worse off than you that see your "unlivable wage" with access and time for the internet is immeasurable wealth. Do not be so self centered. Yes, we are a wealthy nation on a whole, but that does not mean the wealth belongs to you. The nation is not wealthy, the "nation" has no money, only people can have money. Any nation is simply an aggregate of people. If you didn't earn it, there is no argument you can logically and consistently give to reason that you deserve what other people earned. To think you can take by right from "the nation" is in actual fact, the idea that you can take by right from the people in it. The 1% whining is just that; whining. The 1% is not the same set of people year by year. people enter into it and people fall out of it all the time. That level of wealth is not easily obtained and even harder to keep. They don't owe you or me anything. We don't deserve handouts because they have more wealth. Their wealth is not "distributed" to them, it is worked for. And of course, some gain wealth through ill means, but that does not set the stage to keep from others that which was gained fairly anymore than you punish a city because of those that break into houses. The fact of the matter is, that many in fact gain wealth by special privilege from government, the same body you would run to in order to fix all your problems. Again, everything starts and ends with you. You're the one at your own helm. Some people may come along and help and that's fantastic (if not forced) but you are ultimately the one driving your own ship just like everyone else. Someone having more, does not mean it was taken from someone else. The wealth you see around you was NEVER created by someone sitting around yelling at other people to pay their way for them. It was built by people who had a drive, had a talent and worked for it. The reality of the world is death and suffering. Only constant and intelligent work brings you out of that hell. Just because you're out now, does not mean you can't fall right back in. Eating just once is not enough. You will need to eat again and again, so you must labor again and again. The wealth around you is largely a fiction and can fall at any moment either on its own or by those seeking to pull it towards them with hopes of rising up, erroneously thinking that the wealth they grope for is incapable of sinking right down with them. Your ideology is that of a crab in a bucket, pulling down those that seek to rise out which keeps you all in the bucket. Instead of pulling them down, look at what they do. Do what they do to the best of your ability and let others do the same. You can only ever try, but results cannot be guaranteed anymore than you or I have a guarantee of not dying today or tomorrow.

I'm excited about Bernie's candidacy as never before for anyone in my life, and I'm in my forties. I also can't help but just really like the guy for who he is. However, I think he can dramatically improve his efforts at countering irrational socialism-phobia. I've thought about this quite a bit, so this is not a short comment. The "socialism question" is both a question he is frequently asked in interviews and for a substantial number of voters arguably the largest obstacle to their really giving his candidacy consideration (an obstacle those that do not want Bernie to succeed repeatedly try to amplify, often with little regard for intellectual honesty). Bernie's consistent answer to this question is fairly indirect, a listing of countries with democratic socialist governments and a praising of some of the social programs they have. It generally begins, (paraphrasing) "when we look at countries like Sweden, Norway,..." I think this answer would be far stronger if it were preceded by a statement that directly addresses the assumptions about socialism and democratic socialism that lead to the quite widespread phobic distaste and dismissive reaction; assumptions that as I understand it have nothing to do with what Bernie wants for America. So, I think it's worth having a discussion about how the answer can be improved. I certainly am not trying to suggest that Bernie say something he does not believe. Rather, I'm confident that Bernie can begin the answer with a clear and direct indication that he is talking about something useful and complementary to our current capitalism, and that he is as opposed to totalitarianism, and nationalizing industry as his audience. here's my take on what this might sound like from Bernie (apologies for the length)... "Good question. Okay, let's talk about democratic socialism. You'll notice I say democratic socialism. Authoritarian regimes have used the word socialism, but of course this is not what we want (by the way, authoritarian regimes have also used the word Republic, but we don't dismiss Republicans because of it). We're a democracy and I will fight to defend that not seek to change that. So do I mean the replacement of capitalism? No, I don't mean that at all. Capitalism has brought us wonderful innovation and great material wealth as a nation. But we all know over the last 30-40 years the wealth of the nation has grown enormously, but the people as a whole are not doing as well as they did in the past. That's because capitalism run free over time develops very real unpleasant consequences for us as a nation... like huge concentrations of wealth and power that invite corruption both in business and politics. These both have resulted in the tremendous increase in wealth and income inequality people everywhere I've gone around our country are all too aware of when I bring it up... they are living the reality of the many having less and the few having more. I've seen pragmatic successful responses to these real world unpleasant byproducts of capitalism in countries like Sweden, Norway... [insert usual points] ... so by democratic socialism, I don't mean some kind of worship of an ideology, neither a blind worship of a capitalism or socialism, but a pragmatic collaboration of the two." Would love to hear feedback on whether you also think this is a key area Bernie can improve, and if so, how you think he can best improve his response.

Bernie doesn't need to explain democratic socialism to those educated before 1970 when civics was dropped from public schools. It is found in the policies of FDR who is never discussed by Republicans. FDR's 2nd State of the Union address introduced the rights of remunerative work etc. They were considered for adoption in 1948 until Nixon in 1970. For your further education, read Lincoln's 2nd State of the Union address where he discusses the importance of capital or labor. To paraphrase him, he said they are both important, but without labor there is no capital! These are forgotten or unknown today so corporations go untaxed, the wealthy untaxed, with no consideration for the condition of the people which leads to Citizens United absurdity and unregulated Wall Street. Know your history and your rights in a decent society not a Hobbesian one.

nessyness031 that’s why socialism can NEVER BE IMPLEMENTED BY GOVERNMENT. The only way socialism has a chance, is if it is brought in by the free market, when it succeeds and beats out capitalist models. That is the only way to transform a capitalist society into a socialist one. You could throw money at it just to get it started, but you can‘t force the change in. What Bernie is doing, is communism and not socialism. Heavy welfare is inherently more communist in ideal, as it is closer to redistribution based on need and not merit.

Do you have patience for specifics? Just say a word. What's wrong with his polices? they are immoral in addition of being impractical. His polices eradicate the relation between effort and result, between production & distribution. Under his socialist policies, the magnitude of the share which is assigned for the use of each citizen is quite independent of the value of the service he renders. Payment for work becomes quite arbitrary. Economic calculation as such is impossible and that's important if the production in the country is to result in a gain not in lose. Socialism wastes more & more scarce resources with time by mis-allocating them to places where they are less-urgently needed. His polices eliminate the incentives to work, to improve, to innovate, to save, invest etc. When you punish growth, development and success you're specifically destroying the economy & the buying power of your money.

Read an economics book. Freedom leads to prosperity. People act in their self interest: that is the basis of economics. The more you tax their income, the less incentive there is to prosper economically. The more you let them keep, the more incentive their is to succeed, and also the easier it is for everyone to succeed. If you tax something, you get less of it. These aren't "free" programs. The problem is is that many corporate business evade paying taxes through a corrupt system and take unneccesary wealth from the people who earned it in the first place. Statistically speaking I'm assuming you're part of the 99%. Do you want these companies that control everything and who evade taxes at the expense of us paying them to continue? Or do you want them to start paying their legal taxes as American companies and using those funds to expand social security, public education and healthcare? These aren't crazy and "free" ideas. They're how the system should work where EVERYONE pays their fair share in taxes and we use those taxes to fund beneficial programs.

I searched very hard to look for Bernie’s definition of Democratic Socialism. But I found nothing. He always defined Democratic Socialism by criticizing the problem of capitalism without giving a clear idea on how to build his ideal world. The capitalism operates like a machine. If there is a problem in the machin, the communists will destroy it rather than fix it. I hope he can say it out loud that he would nationalize the mean of production in his debate rather than promising college debt forgiveness or Medicare for all.

Now that Sweden's population has grown to over 9 million, they're having problems sustaining all of those public benefits. Denmark is still only around 5.7 million people.

The man doesn’t even know that he’s not talking about democratic socialism. He’s talking about a market economy with larger social safety nets.

Yeah, democratic socialism is a political position, not an economic one. That's why he says that he is a social democrat when they ask him if he is a capitalist. I think he should explain more on that topic, because it confuses people. He is just as capitalistic as every American. He wants to rig the system so it favors the middle class and small business. Today's american capitalism in rigged so it favors the top 1%.

+Rogdub "oday's american capitalism in rigged so it favors the top 1%." Someone with no job and absolutely no skills has access to schools, food, housing, medicine etc. Im sorry to burst your bubble, but the current system benefits the poor. They live far beyond their means because of the rich. Someone with their skill in Africa would be working in a sweatshop for less than a dollar per day.

@Rogdub

player276 Seriously we all know what "access to medicin and schooling" means in the US. There are thousands of horror stories of about the healthcare system on the net. Poor people have to live beyond their means since they are not paid a living wages. People working a Wallmart need food stamps by the government. Education is freakishly expensive. US is becoming more and more like a feudal society.

I think it reflects quite badly on the American left-wing when even their Leader doesn’t know the distinction between a capitalist mixed economy and socialism! he’s blatantly talking about social Democratic mixed economies while mislabelling it a d ‘democratic socialism’ And the only reason I can think of is because they sound similar ! maybe these terms need to be renamed to make it easy for Americans to understand!

+Sol Berg nonsense, nothing to do with big government, the emphasis is on policies not size of government. but how typical is it that the counter arguments are based on association fallacy instead of actually discuss issues. do you ever actually think about policies instead of freaking out over titles? although i suspect that your perspective is so shallow anyway that i don't know why i am wasting my time here looking for an actual profound debate.
