Finally someone gives credit to the novel. T-rex couldn't see unmoving objects, because of the frog's DNA. This tiny detail was absent in all the movies.

I think it wasn't until the 4th movie that any of the scientists onscreen actually admit that all of Ingen's dinosaurs are in some ways different from the actual creatures due to the DNA substitution, such as a lack of feathers on some dinos now understood to be feathered, though in JP2 they did conclude that the Dinos were able to mate because the frog DNA gave them the ability to change genders like some frogs can do. I think Dr Wong mentions that most of the created dinos actually appear quite different from the base animal due to the DNA substitution while defending the creation of Indomitus as "bigger and more scary" for the crowds who can have somehow become bored with the other dinosaurs.

@@donnierust4740 Can't tell you the exact page, cause my book isn't in English and probably isn't the same. Look for that part after the T-rex breakout, where Dr Grant sees the hadrosaur. In my edition it's around page 298. Forth iteration. It's the second chapter that is called THE PARK. I believe Dr Grant mentions frog's DNA for the first time in third iteration, chapter BREEDING SITES. Since then he continues looking for connections between dino's and amphibian's behaviour.

They are wrong, they never say it was frog DNA in the novel that causes their bad sight, it is simply a paleontology theory of Grants in Jurassic Park. Crichton had bad information and even retcons the Tyrannosaur's sight issues in the Lost World as the rex either being confused by the rain or not hungry. The erroneous info in novel is attributed to a fictional Paleontologist named John Roxton(a character from the original lost world book).

Have I got a fun fact for you. So about 120 years ago when these giants fossils were discovered and people didn't know that some fossil finds were the same species as previous samples, T-Rex actually had three names: Manospondylus, _Dynamosaurus_ and lastly, _Tyrannosaurus Rex_ So it turned out these three were the same and the scientists had to decide which one. _Tyrannosaurus Rex_ was chosen as even the people 120 years ago knew that it felt awesome to say. Second fun fact: Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the only animals on earth that the mainstream uses the full scientific name for.

@@Jordaniantrex I got you, fam. So _Manospondylus Gigas_ means "Giant Porous Vertebrae". Boring name, I know, but it's simply because they haven't found the skull with that rather fragmented specimen and did not know that it was a Rex. In fact, they thought that it was a Ceratopsian. If I recall correctly, T-Rex was still an unknown dinosaur at this point (only in 1900 would the skull be discovered and this find dates back to 1896, I believe). So in that 1900 find (going off memory here, so I might be wrong) there were two fossils which they thought were from different species (again, it wasn't complete skeletons and cleaning and piecing together the fossils are a huge undertaking, especially if you have no idea what the animal looked like). The one was named _Dynamosaurus Imperiosus._ _Dynamo_ means "powerful" and Imperiosus means roughly the same. Other synonyms can include "master", "Ruler" or "dictator". So "Ruler of the powerful dinosaurs" perhaps? The other specimen is the one that stood out. The skull was very well preserved and absolutely blew the finder away when he saw it. Upon seeing those jaws, those teeth and that menacing face, he named it _Tyrannosaurus Rex._

@@Mirthful_Midori So I looked up frog vision and this is what I found. Frogs only see well at far distances. This means that they are farsighted. Also they are very receptive to movement, but that doesn't mean they can only see things that move. So yes kind of. In the book it mentioned frog dna being the cause, but even that wasn't completely accurate, as it made it sound as if though frogs were completely blind in the absence of motion. In fact if the t rex vision is based on frogs, then it would be able to easily see you from a far distance, but have blurry vision up close. However, it should still be able to see you to some degree.

Also believed to have one of the best smelling abilities too, allowing it to smell any other predator's kills within miles and show up to bully the other predator away from it's kill. Of course that also makes it even harder to hide from it as well.

Lion roars are far different from potential t rex roars. Lions actually have vocal cords. Their roar could rupture your ear drums, definitely, but the t rex would be at a whole different level. It's larger and would likely have much greater lung capacity due to the lungs of therapods/birds being very efficient at absorbing oxygen. It would have a throat sac like modern birds, maybe not as prominent but still there. It would use this to make low frequency sounds. If you've heard a cassowary call, you'd know how it sends vibrations throughout your body. Now imagine that scaled up to t rex size. Would be devastating. Wouldn't even need to open its mouth.

If you take Prehistoric Planet to heart, T.Rex could also apparently comfortably swim long distances, possibly the only place a tyrannosaur would be remotely vulnerable. But if that's the case, well...I don't know if it was an _enclosure_ in Jurassic World, but if it was just a bunch of islands, a realistic T.Rex would have been wandering from sanctuary to sanctuary, searching for food and better ground. Goes to show just one more reason big theropods basically achieved world domination for a while!

I really love this analysis as it goes to show why people shouldn’t complain so much about inaccuracies. InGen were not making fully accurate dinosaurs and the dinosaurs they made were mishmashed with other animal DNA causing some major side effects that would hinder them to their full potential. Even Masrani’s dinosaurs were just as mishmashed.

This is important to remember. I also recall in the book Jurassic Park, Dr. Wu talks about how they made the dinosaurs slower because it seemed so odd to see such large animals moving so fast. They were always making what they thought people would pay to see, not just what was real. Of course, Jurassic World doubles down on it with Indominus Rex.

The closest thing to that happening is in Camp Cretaceous: Hidden Adventure, where you can have Rexy confront the Tarbosaurus instead of Toro. Rexy ends up tripping and falling first. But when she gets up later and continues the fight, she manages to overpower the Tarbosaurus without any help from other dinosaurs.

And to the Rexy is win allone that is too late for Universal. They humulate the Jurassic T-rexes enought, to the fans (who only watched that, and don't know much from dinos) literely the bigger part of Jirassic fanbase, was think the other big carnivire is even weaker than the Jurassic rexes. That will not Rexes strenght, the will the opponent weakness will be. So the ONLY way to show rexes strong, but not the opponent weak as hell is the killing the today's generation T-rexes (include Rexy) modify the genome to the original, and release that, and that will be strong. Regarding that, I was thinking how the Jurassic World series could've established a plot point that InGen learned how to extract more information from the Dinosaurs' genetic code, giving them fewer gaps to fill with other animal's DNA. I agree with all of this, although I would make one addition in the hypothetical situation that the car chase scene does happen. Recent studies of the Rex metatarsal bones shows that the three were fused together, creating a foot structure comparable to animals evolved for long distance running. The compactness meant that energy loss in each step was minimal and perfectly adapted for running at full speed for a considerable time. This heavily suggests that Rex’s were long distance runners, able to outrun any potential prey, considering the majority did not have this sort of bone structure. Applying this to the car chase scene, I think Rexy would’ve just followed them all the way back to the compound, instead of just giving up, ultimately killing them all once they ran out of road.

From what I've seen from the predator dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs weren't old enough to have had much experience in fighting. Coming up against a natural T-Rex would have suicide. The real deal would have been way too experienced for even the most powerful of them. In some cases they might not even see it until it was too late to even think.

The T-Rex was in my eyes the equivalent of a hammer in terms if simplicity. A hammer is a handle and a bonky bit on the end, you don’t need to add anything to it. A T-Red is a pair of legs and a big mouth, you don’t need to add anything to it. That’s why it was so effective.

The T-Rex is the reverse of what science usually does when explaining things: most of the time animals that were incorrectly researched become less threatening due to finding out that parts that were seen as dangerous weren't actually so. I have always thought that the T. Rex in Jurassic was based off of one of the more gracile morphs of the Tyrannosaur species. While Rexy definitely has some embellishments in her design, I still think she is pretty good as a “genetically engineered, theme park monster”, being based off a real animal.

I have seen speculation that the Jurassic Park animals were malnourished. They possess prominent "shrink-wrapping", which most dinosaurs in media are (inaccurately) shown to have. But Jurassic Park...was not a very good zoo. Keeping a multi-ton predator on an island fed and at a health weight would be difficult.

@@HowlingWolf518 that leads me to one question. Dinosaurs are birdlike build so the posture changed dramatically during the ears of researches. However birds don't have heavy tails. Assuming those enormous bones and muscles were constantly lifted above the ground is a bit too much for me to believe. Dragging the tail every once in a while wouldn't affect the balance of the posture. It would save energy. Every animal on earth with a tail that weighs more than feathers, keep the tail down when just walking. Cats, comodo dragons... Wouldn't it be possible if the new appearance is a bit exaggerated? I don't think most people really understand what a weight and corresponding muscle mass difference really means, whether its a human or an animal. That much more mass (tons in this case) would is a huge factor and the heavier animal would win almost every time.

I would actually love an accurate tyrannosaurus for cinema but there's not a thing wrong with an artistic interpretation of dinosaurs either. A blend of accuracy and artistic touch is what makes cinematic dinosaurs live and breathe. Edit: another thing about an adult tyrannosaurus. Imagine if you did out run it. It could use its sense of smell to track you down for miles wasting very little energy keeping up the pace while you are exhausting yourself trying to keep one step ahead. If you were trying to hide they could use the juveniles sort of like hunting dogs to flush you out of cover and into their open jaws.

Whenever I get the chance, I always like to mention this. Book T-Rex might’ve actually been able to perfectly see stationary targets. In the Lost World Ian Malcolm explains that Grant had a realization after their time on the island explaining that the reason the Rex didn’t attack him during the jeep encounter was because it had already eaten, didn’t consider them a threat (compared to the jeeps) and was overall rather confused on why they weren’t running away, constantly trying to intimidate them by growling, roaring and getting close to them. To prove the point, Ian was saying this because Dogson and his men decided to freeze up whilst stealing Rex eggs when the parents saw them, I think y’all can guess what happens next. I do like to think that this might have been a retroactive retcon made by Crichton, that might have affected the way the Rex was displayed in the movies. Cause besides the jeep scene, there isn’t a single time where the don’t move a muscle gag actually seems to work. And even when it seems to, just like in the book, it can still be chalked up as the Rex just losing interest, getting distracted by something, being confused/curious or by just straight up being drugged and dopey.

The more we learn about Tyrannosaurus, the more and more it seems perfectly suited for a horror movie. This deadly hunter than can see from 5 miles away and smell you from 10 miles away before you know it’s even there. You can try to run but even if it just walked towards you it’d have no trouble catching up on its noise cancelling padded feet. And once it catches you in their jaws, that’s it, whatever she spits out is gonna have the consistency of ground beef with those railroad spike teeth and car crushing jaws. T.rex is the ultimate slasher villain and the only way you could have it be some sort of underdog was if it was a younger individual.

That was Michael Crichton's intent for his series, but Steven Spielberg turned it into an action-adventure franchise. Now I respect Spielberg a lot and I get where he was going with the decision: respecting how kids see dinosaurs and not wanting to take that sense of wonder away, but...geez. This would have been one of the best horror franchise had they stayed to Crichton's vision. Even with the amount of information he had back in 1980s, he still recognized the reality of what it would actually be like if dinosaurs and humans lived in the same world. It would *not* be a good one. These animals are far smarter and more adapted to kill in ways we don't give them enough credit for.

In the Michael Crichton novel, I don't recall T. rex being included on the list of InGen dinosaurs that were recreated using frog DNA. Frogs were only used to fill in the gaps for some of the dinosaurs, with more reptile/avian DNA being used for the rest. Having all the dinosaurs utilize the frog genes was a more from the movie version. Red Raptor Writes pointed this out to illustrate how the T. rex's eyesight being a result of the frog DNA was not likely Crichton's original intention, even if it would make perfect sense at first glance.

Another fun thing to consider about the Rex is its 'tiny' arms have been modeled to musculature able to casually move figures in the hundreds of pounds, and so could have been a huge value for its day-to-day logistics. More than enough strength to move just about all foliage short of full-grown trees, it would have been able to easily dig out comfortable pits to sleep and rest in. And while laying down in such hypothetical pits, it could capitalize on its subsonic hearing, getting a good read on all of its surroundings similar to "putting an ear to the ground." Combine that with their stealth, they probably enjoyed many serendipitous ambush opportunities along the way to anywhere their ample olfactory senses guided them.

About the whole eyesight thing, it was not because the JP T. Rex's eyesight was bad by any means. It was based on how most birds (yes, even hawks and eagles) have eyes which function best with moving objects, which is perfectly suited to their lifestyle.

I think the only ways the characters could survive the paddock scene, against an accurate T. rex, would be if the animal was more curious than hungry towards them and/or was distracted by the tropical storm going on around them. My favorite thing about the Tyannos is that T. Rex had a weird call when it was getting ready to kill and was already eating on a body. It's from a further developed tentadum drum (a layer of flesh in the ear canal that is able to pick up really deep vibrations), and both the Sue Exhibit and Studio's YT channel showed that this call ended up being so horrifying it would stun prey including their own young at a last resort. Listen to the audio with your ears covered over and your eyes closed, with volume all the way up. It is super heavy and in weird huffs.

For the motivation of the roaring, I'd say that the T. rexes might be smelling something and launching into territorial threat display behaviors and not hunting ones. This would also partially explain the low kill rates for small prey during such moments.

A fully paleo accurate T.rex that was the same size as Rexy, but possess all of the bulk and muscle that the real animal did, the absolutely tremendous bite force, the super potent binocular vision, the incredible nose, the insane dinosaur intelligence, and other finely tuned and acute senses that it wielded would be the indisputable apex predator in Jurassic Park/World. Obviously it’s still an animal so it wouldn’t be an OP monster, but it would be damn close. Tyrannosaurus Rex was the PEAK of dinosaur evolution, it was the zenith, and nothing else came close. There’s a reason why they dominated for so long, and the more we find out about them, the more insane they become.

Easy to say so when its like 7 time for studied than any other giant theropod… A puzzle in which we have more pieces will always look more interesting/complete than the one in which only a few pieces were found. Trex is also way less « Ancient » than other mega theropod while being incredibly well adapted to his environment. This and the fact that it had no competitor of similar size add to Trex’s success. People tend to over exaggerate this dinosaur pretty often these time… mixing a bunch of scientific theories together while ignoring those who say otherwise is not a rare sight. In defence to the movies, the Rex was hunting for the infants in Lost World rather than itself. And the Rex, as well as all the other dinos, had an added DNA strain to help them grow faster so as to fill the park faster

I read an article around the time Fallen Kingdom came out, that the filmmakers asked Jurassic Park fans if the T-rex should be changed to a more up to date, accurate appearance. All the fans responded No, leave her as she is. Which I'm glad they kept her the same. She wasn't made from 100% dinosaur DNA, so it makes sense for her not to be accurate in appearance or behaviour. As Alan Grant said "They are genetically modified, theme park monsters. Nothing more, nothing less."

In the Lost World book they sort of debunked the "t-rex cant see you if you don't move" theory, saying that while Grant thought that was the case, research had progressed since then. They proposed that she probably could see Grant, but chose not to eat him because she'd just been fed a goat.

I find it ironic that the JP/JW T.Rex hunts more like a Carcha or Tarbo then an actual T.Rex. I'm glad it's generally understood that the movies could undersell certain dinosaurs and Rex is no exception which is shocking considering how threatening they already are in the series. The real rex was a sneakier and chonkier monster of an animal.

@@VYDEOS2 Sorry to burst your bubble, but contrary to what you might think, not all paleo-behaviour is under the same level of speculation. In fact, some aspects we have actual good idea from the actual fossils themselves. The idea the real T. rex was actually a silent and sneaky stalker for example is supported by the fact it has toe pads based on the footprint that the video brought up. The hypothesis it has good vision able to see in even low-light conditions? Having the largest eyes of any terrestrial animal based on its eye sockets, binocular, and scans of its brain cavity supports having great eyesight. Its puncture and pull feeding method (and potential way to dispatch prey too)? Feeding traces from bite marks left on the bones of their prey animals. Face-biting behaviour? Direct fossil evidence of bite marks on their faces. Juveniles being much more speedier and nimble (thus having different prey)? Supported by the overall anatomy of the juvenile T. rexes we have. As you can see, while we can't deduce every behaviour it could have had from the fossils alone, there is still a fair amount we still can deduce from the fossils alone.
