Lesson #1: NEVER break (or, usually, swear one. Hi, Sons Of Feanor), an oath in Tolkein's world.

The way I see it, is that Aragorn was consciously honoring Isildur's oath, by releasing them for finally honoring their oaths to support Isildur, as Isildur had promised. Perhaps, in the end, they might have made some degree of difference if not released, but Aragorn, despite knowing they would have been an asset, honored his ancestor's oath to them, knowing it was the right thing to do. And, by doing so, he honored Isildur's memory as well.

I also had an impression that if Aragorn hadn't released them, it would have been no different than Sauron or Sauramon enslaving living peoples to their servitude. While I've read nothing to indicate this, I do wonder if there was a bit of internal conflict or hesitation on Aragorn's part on letting them go? Aragorn was acutely aware that many choices he makes as a Ranger will ultimately have an impact on his reclaiming the throne and the war itself. I've always wondered if this particular situation was another "temptation" that Aragorn overcame. But, as the video mentions, he too was aware that the dead were moreso weapons of fear and wouldn't be effective in future battles. They served their purpose in helping the Grey Company reach Minas Tirth and defeat a massive army that would've devastated Gondor. The movies have a subtle moment in which Aragorn looks somewhat hesitant when the King of the Oathbreakers asks for Aragon to release them.

While I understand why they had to do it, the movies spoiled the rohirrim charge by making them this deus ex machina equaliser.

The Oathbreakers weren't featured in the 1980 Rankin/Bass version of The Return of the King.

Interestingly enough, only in the movies do they kill anything. In the books they are just a bluff to take the corsair ships. The ghosts couldn't hurt a fly.

I suppose their servitude depended on the terms and the extension of the original oath huh?

Why did Sauron want to rule Middle Earth?
@Taiko206 Жыл бұрын
Mainly because he wanted to impose his sense of order onto the rest of the world. Where his master , Morgoth simply wanted to rule and dominate Middle-Earth because he felt it was his right to do so, Sauron had different ideas on that. Since he was once one of Aulë's servants he also had his former masters' tendency to bring order into the world, but through Morgoth's influence this got twisted, just like it twisted with Saruman by him, which was quite easy since Saruman also had been a servant of Aulë and so Sauron knew all too well how to manipulate him.
