This was incredibly insightful. My initial thoughts on this were that Saruman fell due to fear and hopelessness in the face of Sauron's rise. Instead, his fall is more akin to Melkor's. Pride.

Good analysis. Saruman's rationalizing of his hunger for power and siding with Sauron always struck me as both pitiful and terrifying. As Frodo told Sam, in Sauron's own presence, the latter's fall was proportionate to his former high nature. And Sauron had just enough self-reflection to appreciate that; his existence at that point must have seemed a literal living Hell to him.

Although I loved the films and understood any omissions or changes made, the one thing I wish had been include, was The Scouring of the Shire. It was SUCH an important part of the book, ending the hobbits' journey and showing how much they had grown. In a couple of cases literally, as well as metaphorically. :) We never got to see the diminished Saruman of Many Colours and his final defeat at the hands of the hobbits...

Saruman desired order and efficiency. That coupled with his pride and envy made him particularly susceptible over time to follow in Sauron's footsteps. Imagine the frustration of a being older than time having to deal with the petty squabbles, mistakes and incompetence of the free peoples when he knew he knew better than they what should be done...if only he had the power and authority...that was his thinking and what made it so easy for him to gradually become like Sauron.

Saruman's last act of evil was the taking of the Shire. I'm quite sure he could not have realized how petty that was bir how far he had fallen in his last for power. His defeat there by somewhat mundane powers and Hobbits are his ultimate legacy of failure and self-aggrandizement. Thanks for your work here. Usually I don't like interpretations of the lore, but your work sticks to the spirit of Tolkien and I'm sure he'd be happy with your work. 😀

Short answer is that he was called to by the ring, and fell to the temptation of the palantir in his possession. This did Sauron ensnare him, through the palantir at BaradDur.
