Possibly, the general consensus of the Cascadian Independence Movement (Which I am a part of), is a stress on municipal liberty and self-determinism, each community being able to choose how it is run, whether it be stout capitalism, or communism. This would allow the conservative areas to keep their ideology while liberal areas or those with more eccentric ideologies are allowed to keep theirs.
@michietn53913 жыл бұрын
@@thedragonsdenclips So hypothetical Cascadia is a union of multicultures? That looks to me like an obvious recipe for divisiveness and malfunction. There is no point in forming a union of disagreements. What would happen if two people who hate each other were forced to marry? What would happen if attacked from outside, with one faction liking it, the other abhorring it?
@thedragonsdenclips3 жыл бұрын
@@michietn5391 First I will ask you: How is that any different from the system we have now? We have seen in our own lifetimes the polar divisiveness that the structure of this government causes. Second I will state this: People always will disagree, no matter what. Allowing people to make communities with differing ideologies allows a space for most any method of thinking, and eliminates the need to force your ideology upon others to achieve that environment. It would be foolish for a community to begin pushing acts of violence against another for they themselves would likely lose their community aligned with the ideology that they themselves chose. Rates of happiness would be higher as people could be content in their own communities, and not wish to disturb the peace that allowed them to create said communities. Those groups that promote violence would be much smaller than in the US today, where such groups grow rampantly due to the general unease of US society with government, chafing against overt authority forcing a "One Size Fits All" agenda, and general inability to create and maintain communities after a vision. Self determinism does not exist in the United States, as well as in most countries. To quote Murray Bookchin: "Many arguments against libertarian municipalism - even with its strong confederal emphasis derive from a failure to understand its distinction between policy-making and administration. This distinction is fundamental to libertarian municipalism and must always be kept in mind. Policy is made by a community or neighborhood assembly of free citizens; administration is performed by confederal councils composed of mandated, recallable deputies of wards, towns, and villages. If particular communities or neighborhoods - or a minority grouping of them choose to go their own way to a point where human rights are violated or where ecological mayhem is permitted, the majority in a local or regional confederation has every right to prevent such malfeasances through its confederal council.". Each community is able to decide how it is run to the will of the people in that community, until such an event arises that A: Conflicts greatly with human rights to where intervention is necessary, or B: Major ecological damage is caused, threatening the natural biosphere of the surrounding areas. While this is certainly not a comprehensive coverage of what could lead to a confederal intervention in a community, those are the two most basic, and most likely to be used reasons for such an intervention. Few can argue about the importance of human rights, and in the Pacific Northwest environmentalist sympathies are strong even in some of the most conservative areas, so such acts to protect environment also likely would be met with a sense of unity between communities, unless it is perceived that the measures proposed go beyond what is necessary to protect that community's natural resources, in which case the majority of the federation would object or simply vote against those measures. There is always a risk of violence when differing ideologies come into light, but let me ask you: Is this system any better or worse than a system that only allows one ideology to present itself fully, and suppresses others? Ideological suppression is a main ingredient in perceived oppression for many people, making a much higher potential for violence as these ideologies continue to be suppressed.

In my opinion, the capital city would likely be Seattle as it is not 100% but fairly central and is also the economical and population center of all of cascadia, or possibly they could create a new large economically important and geographically central. Anyway please make another on Cascadia and and it will be interesting to see we’re this independence movement grow.

Victoria is the oldest city in the region and is very much a big cultural and historic city where every street and building is important to the history of the region in some way or another so it would be a good capital for cultural reasons

Born and raised in Portland, man I wish this could happen so much. I don't need to tell you how upset we are with this country. We aren't represented correctly nor do we want to be associated with the mess that is the United States. Although I will say this, Idaho would NEVER be a part of this and the PNW would never want them. They are hard red and the complete opposite of what the population center wants. When we have alt right idiots invading portland, they often times come from Idaho. Edit: Victoria doesn't make sense as a capitol. It's not in the center of the region at all and is on vancouver island. The most logical city to use would be Seattle, as it is *the* center of the region. Easy to access from both Portland and vancouver.

Hello from a Cascadian, a Geography PhD, and someone who has actually worked on Cascadia region projects. First off, a fundamental error, the 'expanded' Cascadia that you referred to--stretch from the Alaska Panhandle to northern Calif. is most definitely not coterminous with the Cascade crest--it goes well beyond that. Indeed the Cascade crest version of Cascadia is by some measure the most restricted. The boundary would be at the actual Cascade crest, or the spine of the mountains from roughly central B.C. to northern Calif--an even more restricted one would discount the extension of the mountains into Calif. The eastern slopes of BC, WA and OR would remain within their parent countries. This more concentrated vision has the advantages of cohesiveness in a) being Pacific rather inland oriented in terms of trade and physical environment b) it is predominantly urban and would not to be concerned with the sparsely populated regions c) it is mostly politically liberal But your conclusion is correct, the notion of Cascadia as an independent is far more unrealistic than to to even call it a pipe dream, and that the only path forward is through regional cooperation. That already has been going on for some 30-40 years; the governors and premiers, as well as the legislatures, meet with each other occasionally and there are various regional business groups along the I-5 corridor. Actually, such interaction is not unknown along the shared boundary primarily because border states / provinces often have more in common with each other than either does with their federal gov't; Montana with Alberta, Ontario with New York / Michigan. These went along swimmingly until first 9/11 happened, then was rebuilt and then the Trump disaster hit where he basically threw Canada (and all other allies) under the bus. Now we have the pandemic and while we can once again expect a recovery in relations, a proper regional grouping will never happen. As to Idaho being part--that is laughable. That most conservative state would have no political clout over an entity fully controlled by coastal liberals. Indeed, (most of) inland BC, eastern WA & OR would also be further reduced in their influence were the borders to be 1:1 with the current state / prov boundaries. All that is before even giving the slightest thought to the massive costs and complexities invlolved in such a trasnfer. What happens to federal land? Between the military bases, national parks, dams and ports it's a huge undertaking. What about transfer payments? What kind of government?--the parliamentary system and the 3-branch American system are vastly different? The Quebec sovereignty movement, which never succeeded, began to expose some of these complexities for both parties and here we would have that situation with more variables, two federal entities and at least three first level administrative districts. Fun experiment, but does not pass the reality test.

I've always regarded "Canada" as no more than an integral part of the United States. The 51st if you will. They even speak with the same accent(s) No more distinct (& less so) then the southern US accent(s) They were both founded by the same people/stock i.e the British. Vancouver has bags more in common with Seattle just a few miles away than it ever would with Toronto or Ottawa. Seattle has a lot more in common with Vancouver than New York, Washington DC or Detroit.

Nobody's talking about the heavily proposed state of Greater Idaho, consisting of eastern Oregon, south of Eugene and Salem, and also northern California, this was proposed first by Eastern Oregonians because they have much more right ideals then salem, Portland, Eugene, Bend, along with almost every city that has a population over around 20k and you have to understand that Eastern Oregon is practically it's own state just because we're so divided.

As someone who lives in the region, anywhere south of the Willamette Valley would not want to be a part of Cascadia, and no one east of the Cascade range would want to be a part of Cascadia either. I bet that people who live north of the valley that Vancouver B.C. would want to be a part of Cascadia either, so politically, Cascadia would be a much smaller area than the two options mentioned. I suppose that including the entire Columbia River drainage basin would be an important thing for Cascadia to feel safe, protecting the water resource.

I like to believe that the northern California would be included, like the coastal, Klamath, and obviously cascade ranges. Also if this were to happen I could imagine further state division like splitting Oregon, Washington, and BC into east and west to make it fair representation for the more conservative people

I would defintely think that Victoria could be the capital of Cascadia due to its centralness and easy access without any obstacles in its way ,though there can in 50% chance could be three capitals based on geographic difference (Juneau as a northern capital, Victoria as a central and main capital and Portland as a Sourthern capital)

It is quite understandable why Cascadia would desire to become independent of the US. California has the same feelings, as they are governed by a federal system that gives more power and control to the eastern part of the country, and because the eastern part of the country has chronic problems that the west coast wants nothing to do with. But to secede from the US is problematic because they will never free their cash cow. It is possible, however, for Cascadia and California to become more independent within the US, primarily by establishing similar agencies and departments that mirror those of the US federal government. Establishment of foreign relations would also be possible, though non-binding. Good luck to both.
