The Commonwealth has evolved over quite some time since the days of the Empire. Multiple sovereign states now share the same monarch.

Tensions between Quebec and the western provinces, particularly Alberta, are mainly economic, cultural and political. Indeed, Alberta maintains that the high standard of living of Quebecers depends on equalization, to which it contributes largely for the benefit of Quebec. The fact that the official language of Quebec is French, that it is the only French-speaking province in North America, irritates the rest of the majority English-speaking country, although two official languages, English and French, are on the same footing. of equality thanks to the Official Languages Act of Canada, adopted by the government of Pierre-Elliot Trudeau in 1969. Western Canada considers itself to be governed by Prime Ministers from Quebec - such as Trudeau father and son, Mulroney , Chrétien - tend to favor Quebec, which is largely false. The disputes between Quebec and Ontario lie in the part which the Ontario capital, Toronto, monopolizes economically in relation to Quebec, thanks to the intervention of the federal government, which tends to favor Ontario in many areas. Hydro One, Ontario's state energy company, refuses, for example, to buy clean and cheaper electricity from Hydro-Québec.

Aside from some people in Vancouver which has a shit ton of ontarian immigrants who basically have dumber politics than california the only problem British Columbians have with Alberta are that Albertans really cannot drive for shit and that a loud minority of Albertans are completely rude tourists who get in the way of locals trying to go about their business. My prediction is that pragmatism would win and BC and Alberta would end up being close allies cooperating on economic and military matters. Most people in BC really dont care about politics either way which is actually our problem because those who do tend to be assholes. The current wave of sort of pseudo eastern liberalism is coming to an end though because their idiotic economic management has made stuff too expensive for locals there are a lot of people who really want something new and the way the NDP locked down locals while allowing near free access for foreigners has completely pissed people off because we are ultimately quite localist/local first people. I'm British, but I'm proud of Canada as a fully independent country that we helped create, and an ally and friend. Canadian provinces could go down the route of some other ex-British territories around the world and replace their flags with random new flags (that often look like a child created them, in my opinion). It seems to be only small insignificant territories or countries, and ones that are very self conscious, insecure, and anti-British that seem to need to do this. Quebec has had 2 independance referenda in the last 50 years and still has a rather large independance movement. It's quite funny seeing someone who has no real background with canadian history give his take on it considering just how complex this whole thing is even for Québécois citizens. Your language division is not quite correct as it only takes into account native speakers. For instance, 94% of Québec speaks french, 50% is french/english bilingual. Around 100% of Ontario speaks english, 10% is bilingual. Part of new brunswick could join up with Québec considering their 33% of french speakers that are currently getting shafted.

You say that there doesn't seem to exist any large rivalries between the provinces. But as I have understood things, there exists a huge rivalry between the eastern, and western provinces. I personally know a guy from Alberta, and he always goes on about how BC, AB, and SK should secede from Canada and form their own state. Mostly due to him not liking how all the economic output of the western provinces gets sent east to the people that "does not respect us and our way of life". Another interesting development from this scenario would be the independence of First Nations without Canada. There are pockets of land throughout Canada variable in size that are separate jurisdictions. Although very small in size I think many would seek their sovereignty and independence as nations (some are self-governing already) or seek new agreements with the newfound nations. The treaties they have with Canada would no longer exist so then what. Very interesting scenario.

I could see more “petty” skirmishes, minor border disputes, arguments over pipelines, that sort of thing (things we actually already have as provinces inside one country). I also don’t see PEI changing their name even if they became a republic, maybe BC but not PEI. Edit #2; Quebecian? The word you’re looking for is Québécois.

But of trivia but all the Canadian Provinces would retain the monarchy upon independence. This is because of a system known as “Monarchy in the Canadian Provinces”. Just as Canada has a Governor-General to represent the monarch federally, each province has a lieutenant-governor to represent the monarch provincially. This institution would remain upon independence making each newly independent state remain a monarchy, unless the new country (most likely Quebec) were to decide otherwise
@mcmeyer17854 жыл бұрын
I generally really like your videos, but I wonder how much research went into this video? First, there is definitely some rivalry between provinces, like you mentioned in the end Quebec even has a sizeable independence movement. Alberta also seems to dislike Ontario, Quebec & BC for the power that they have. Second, there weren't mentions as to why Ontario, Manitoba & BC still have their British style flags. Stating that it is a problem is passing judgement to the people living there. What if they want to keep the flag? Is that wrong? Personally I know a lot of people that would like to keep the flag. You also didn't seem to know much about the flags of New Brunswick & PEI. I'm not saying they shouldn't change, but there are reasons for these flags existing today and hose weren't taken into account. Third, adding Newfoundland (not The Newfoundland) & Labrador to Quebec doesn't make any sense. Quebec speaks predominantly French and was a French colony, while Newfoundland & Labrador (as you mentioned) predominantly speak English and were a British colony. Newfoundland & Labrador would be more likely to join New Brunswick, Nova Scotia & PEI if they would join others, since there is a common history. It might look logical on a map, but that's about it. Fourth, Canada as a whole is supportive of the monarchy, while a lot of provinces would likely abolish the monarchy (especially the territories & Quebec), some might keep the Queen as head of state. Canada doesn't have any ties to the UK in regards to their sovereignty anymore, so that wouldn't change. The UK & Canada just share a monarch. Fifth, not all 'other languages' are native languages. This would obviously be more likely in the territories and sparsely populated regions in the north of Alberta, Saskatchewan & Manitoba. Ontario and BC especially have large immigration populations, primarily from Asia. 'Other languages' would here most likely refer to Hindi, Punjabi, Cantonese, Mandarin and many other languages, or they would at least account for a large percentage of the 'other language' speakers. Sixth, I think it is very unlikely that a lot of provinces would keep French as an official language. I only see this happening for Quebec (for obvious reasons), where it is the only official language and they're quite protective of it; and New Brunswick, since it has a large minority of native French speakers and is the only bilingual province in all of Canada. All other provinces and territories have French speakers accounting for less than 10% of the population (as the graph you used points out). These provinces don't have any ties to the French language, history or culture. It's just that federal issues are dealt with in a bilingual fashion. BC as a province for example doesn't use French. And BC is an example where other languages rather than French are much more widely spoken. Finally, what really made me doubt the effort you put into research on Canada and your previous knowledge of the country is that you don't know how to pronounce Saskatchewan or Newfoundland. It did sound funny and could've been a joke, but it seemed like you just didn't know it. It is just one search on YT or Google to figure out how to pronounce something you will be discussing. I'm not here to speak on behalf of all of Canada, or even for someone for that matter, since I'm not Canadian, but I did frown a lot upon the things stated in this video. I'm a big fan, this one to me just missed the mark and seemed a bit sloppy. I'm not here to be hateful, that's not my intention, I just wanted to voice my opinion.

YES! This all bothered me a lot. I understand that it's just for entertainment's sake but it really does not seem like he knows what Canada is like. A lot of these "predictions" just seem to be based off of what HE felt suitable, or currently felt wrong.. Ontarians like their flag very much. Provinces can, and have, changed their flags even while in Canada so any flags they have now are very likely to remain in the case of independence. And that joining of NL to Quebec definitely pissed off a bunch of Newfies, who are very proud of their province. Hell, if he looked into Canadian history a bit, he might've predicted that Newfoundland and Labrador would ask the United Kingdom to become an overseas territory again and it'd still be more realistic than the quebec thing. I bet he only did the Maritime Union because it "felt right" to bunch up those tiny, troublesome provinces into one.. and it was only by chance that it lines up with our shared cultures here in the very distinct Maritimes.

Yeah personally I think the union jack on some of our flags makes us more unique removing everything british would be unlikely in most places in Canada

I think there's a small movent for western canada (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and possibly Manitoba) for independence if you find that interesting

I think the movement is a lot larger than most other Canadians realize.

It's just muffled and subverted by the Canadian Government controlled media.

@@dmx9122 Yep, it has already been 25 years. Four decades since the first referendum. An entire generation has grown up never experiencing the fun of national unity being the main issue and the two provincial parties who are associated with the national unity debate got slammed in the last Quebec provincial election. Unless Canada breaks down somehow, I just don't see the conditions getting any more favourable for independence than they were in the mid-90s. They younger generations of Quebecers are more outwards looking and the province is more diverse now. The old folks who remember being treated as second class citizens are pretty old now and even their kids (my generation) are greying. The BQ will persist as a regional/protest party but more and more younger Quebecers have a dual sense of identity (kind of like EU citizens do). They don't think Canada is perfect or view it quite the same way as the rest of Canada but they have a less divided sense of connection than their elders and view it as positive on the whole As someone who grew up during the referendum era, it's the rhetoric out in Alberta that worries me. I recognize that kind of regional anger.

I think you underestimate the separatist and independent movement in Québec. There is still an important proportion of Québécois that want to separate from Canada. BUT, it’s important to know that it’s no where near as big or important as it once was, in fact the separatist movement is almost non existent amongst the younger Québec’s population so it’s unlikely to ever happen. There also was a rather important separatist movement in Alberta, but since their economy crashed in the last months, its almost gone.

And there are a lot of english speaking quebecs who would basicly start a civil war if quebec tried to leave

I live in Montreal, and from what i see the movement is dying. Personaly, i want to keep Canada united, and i seems a crushing majority of people want that too. I know outside the big city, the separatist movement is a bit more active, but they would not be the most impacted by the changes and the Montreal region alone represent half the Quebec population.

Ephraïm Boateng I agree

Hey, General Knowledge, if you’re reading this, a good reference you can use when researching canada is McLeans magazine. Also, there is a huge separations movement in the west, as well as the on in Quebec. (sask. alberta, bc, not so sure bout the territories and Manitoba though.)

Fairly certain that in the first ten seconds you have Greenland as part of Canada in the map on the left. Denmark may have something to say about that.

Quebec almost became independent multiple times and many of the provinces have issue with different decision by the federal government. In addition, you ignored the native people that live in northern quebec that and ontario that might declare their own independence

Canada has Prime Ministers, not Presidents, therefore, I imagine the majority of them would probably retain this title for their head of state.
